The quality of Nott's recent play

I intended to sit down last night and listen to the game and have the Champions League on mute on the telly. After around 15 minutes, I turned the Notts game off and watched Liverpool instead. Why? Because I was bored. It then struck me that Notts games recently have been less than exciting. Now it might be different if you are there in person, but I find it harder and harder to listen to the games. Yes I know we are going well and I'm very happy about that but......

Do others feel the same or am I being too picky?

the problem so to speak is we are still grinding out results. If we're were getting wallopped every match then SD would no doubt change it,but to go to Donny and win is a big result. We do lack the entertainment factor or the wow factor which is a shame as with the wingers at the club you'd expect that. What we have got is so much hard work going on sometimes they may forget it's an entertainment business.

Let's be honest though. We said a similar thing last year when we were getting hammered every week. Now we are coming through games down to sheer hard work. Last year they couldn't be accused of that!

While results are in, keep going SD!

I managed to listen to the whole match and it did get better in the second half. I think @hissingdwarf is spot on we are grinding out results but that is good because we are winning, hopefully the entertainment will follow.

I listened to the whole game and was logged into our chat room, I didn't think it was that bad to be fair. It wasn't until Colin Slater mentioned we hadn't had a shot on target that got me thinking how disappointing the first half was. I mean it sounded like we had a couple of decent chances, I can remember Colin saying that their keeper was forced to make a good save but I guess it wasn't on target.

Second half sounded better, I think we are lacking rhyme and direction within our play.

Doncaster Rovers was never going to let us outright attack them, they didn't sound to be all that clever either especially in the first half but any home side should create a few chances.

Positive thing is the result, we shouldn't overlook that but I am sure the lads will be practicing and improving on the training ground.

I think to some level it is to be expected.

It would be nice to compare our budget with sides that we have either beaten or drawn against. The squad put together a spirited performance, quality on comes in to the field of play when you have form, recently we have not had much consistency

Last night doncaster dealt with us well.

Notts could have played better but its just typical football for me.

The result was very good, and more importantly the results have been excellent which I wouldn't change for an exciting 3-2 loss but the games sound very dire and the commentary is lifeless, you get the impression that CS & DY would rather watch paint dry (i'm not knocking them that's just what comes across)

I felt the crowd was lifeless, I mentioned this in the match chat.

I don't really recall hearing Doncaster fans apart from when the disallowed the goal, I think they become somewhat vocal at a couple of points before but not much at all. I didn't hear any of ours (possible due to location) but once we scored I did and several points from that period on.

Tuesday games huh?

i agree but i do feel they will focus and improve.

yesterday i did not listen to the game so i dont know, i have read negative comments on banter pages but little from our own fans. i dont really care, its not about winning but for me its about progress.

we have made that.

Part of the recent Problem is cassidy being back in the team as a loan striker. He does all the right things, but half hearted. Thompson is an animal upfront and has the ability to bring a ball down to feet, rob a defender of the ball, has pace and confidence. Cassidy would never have the ability to score a goal like the one when we came back from 2 nil down. Thompson chases everything at pace, whereas Cassidy strolls into the right positions. The big change lately has been Cassidy back in the team and him playing on his own for the majority of games ( zero goals)

I note that the comments seem to be from people who  listened to the R Nottm commentary, and wonder if that is the problem. Football is a spectator sport, and having seen just about every thing with Notts, it must be hard for CS to inject some excitement into the commentary. Compare it to the Florist reports, with classics like  - if it had gone in the net, it would have been a goal, -

in difficult conditions and some senior players missing we battled with a physically strong side, we competed all through the game and won.  SD did not go there to entertain Doncaster Rovers fans. The Notts fans who went to the game came home happy. CS and DY telling  it as it is may not be good for radio, but at the end of the game, WE SCORED 1 THEY SCORED NONE.  (JS)

@Piety I think you're right about football being a spectator sport, though coverage does give a good impression and feel. Especially when the commentator is good, I'll leave this for another debate but my comments are not aimed towards Uncle Colin being bad at all.

Unlike them other lot across the river.

I'm pleased to see a balanced response from someone who's got a first hand account of the game. I tend to watch more than just who's on the ball, I look for movement and effort. There's more than playing well with the play, a lot goes into off the ball movement and knowing where to be at the right time and things things do not pass over well unless you watch.

All opinions are very valid though.

Highlights are here folks - Link

Colin Slater is the Main reason for peoples mood. If you're not at matches

He hardly get's excited,  and points out most of our faults.

I'm embarresed to introduce notts on the Radio to my Footy Friends here in Canada. I hope we get on TV soon

And Colin Retires before we get to the Championship. He is a Great ambassador for NCFC, But the brand he brings is Old & Miserable.

Rant over !!

In the after match summarising on the radio the players were praised for the gutsy performance they had all given.Comments were made about last seasons lack of effort from a lot of players and how SD must have felt with their attitude when he took charge.SD has only been manager of Notts for just over a year but he;s replaced the disinterested losers with players willing to fight for the cause. The present squad may not be world beaters but they do,mostly, give their all and are winning  matches. The present management team will know where improvements need making and given time will make the necessary changes. As the quality of playing personel improves so will the performances.

@Dripsey3 I agree, I was at the game yesterday and we are poor going forward.

I dont think anyone expected us to leave with the win, the defending was capable majority of the time. Carroll was called upon far too much for my liking, I would not knock the result because its rewarding to see us able to grind out results. I think they should have won they created better chances.

Why is Cassidy even in the team? I would start Murray ahead of him any day of the week.

I believe that you have to earn the right to play... we are battling week in week out, and picking up results, but I think we are only just winning the fights right now, and you have to be bossing the game sufficiently to then "have at em" and let the flair in the side do their work...

Happy at the moment that we have improved leaps and bounds, and are surpassing my and I suspect many others expectations..
