A Stuart Maynard Notts Team? A Tactical Analysis.

Great analysis this. I'm sure that Stuart will be working on strengthening our defence by small tactical changes & modifying the shape when going forward to avoid being exploited on the break.

The conundrum will be, balancing our threat in attack, & not losing that potency, with reducing our defensive frailties.

Toms analysis demonstrates how this could be done. It is going to be fascinating to see if Stuart can solve this conundrum to cement our place in the playoffs.

its going to be interesting to see if stuart maynard does make any changes, because his style has been spoken about as being similar which made him seem the most logical replacement for luke williams. he might opt for something a bit different with our players, as each squad is different and have strengths in different areas but i do think its unlikely that he will change much.

It will be good if Stuart Maynard can rein in the defensive mistakes, but if his playing style is too similar, it might not be tactical changes we need but new defensive-minded centre backs. I'm sure he will be able to coach it out of the players eventually. The main thing is to build on our foundation and hopefully secure the playoffs.

@AmericanPie @liampie the tactical analysis was quite revealing on how Stuart lined up Wealdsone. I also think it's interesting that Wealdstone have conceded 36 goals against in comparison to Chesterfield's 34 against and Chesterfield are running away with the national league. So Stuart does can organise the defense of a team.

@Robbie That's a very fair point! I hope Stuart Maynard can get our defence to run through brick walls for him and to make sure the keepers are better protected. Reducing the amount of chances teams get one on one would be a massive start.

@AmericanPie I think Stuart will get Notts playing much better as a team all over the pitch, like midfield players tracking back and other players covering holes created when defenders maraud forward.

Good insight and analysis, it goes to show how ideal finding someone who plays similar to Luke Williams can inherit a good squad that has more depth than his previous team but in a way where his ideas should be easier to put over. It shouldn't be a dramatic change. Which is good. I don't think a new manager changing things is a negative approach, because it's down to the players to take it on board and work to incorporate it - yet it's easier when someone has a similar idea.

The transitional period between Stuart Maynard taking over should be easier for him to instruct the players because we already have a similar style to Wealdstone.

I also doubt any of our players will resist his ideas, as they all seem on the same page and want to continue to do well. So, ideally, Maynard can get to grips with our defence. Figure a way to retain the same formation without leaking goals but also attack with the exciting momentum where you feel it's only a matter of time before we do score.

This is sad, I will stand behind Maynard no matter what - even if he gets off to a slow start.

It's a cliché, but that first win will be massive and hopefully signify the torch being passed from Luke William/Jim O'Brien to Stuart Maynard.

Yeah, very interesting. Not sure I'm sold on the inverted wing-backs, was this more down to the limits he had at Wealdstone though? I think we need to keep the pitch as big possible, I don't really think our only wide players constantly coming inside and narrowing the space helps us. Who knows, maybe it'll play out differently or maybe we'll never see it!

I didn't realise how impressive Wealdstone's defence is; 6th best in terms of goals conceded - Just as long as you ignore the fact they're 19th for goals scored! But here he's got a very different set of attacking players, some are probably the best in the league so it would be very hard to effectively stop us being a threat going forward. I think we'll have to sacrifice our goal threat a bit in order to shore up the defence, but if turns out we score fewer goals but start to concede considerably less no-one will be moaning.

Under Stuart Maynard, we should see more organisation in our defence. The key for us is having a midfield that can transition smoothly between attack and defence.

It seems highly likely that there won’t be much change. We might alter formations during games, but it appears that the starting approach will be what we’re familiar with. This makes sense as it provides Notts with ample space to advance. I just hope we limit the number of times we attempt to play out from the back. It’s not productive when nerves kick in and teams capitalise on this. I’m confident that Stuart Maynard will improve things defensively.

I agree @True Magpie I would like Notts to be more cautious and less adventurous up front. Notts are an entertaining team, but I do dislike the tendancy to involve in ping pong football with the opposition. We've seen a lot of that during the last dozen games or so when Notts have found themselves behind to defensive errors and are then forced to throw caution to the wind. I hope Stuart can change that.

I’m surprised we haven’t been linked with one or two of their players, as I could see some filling the gaps to ensure that he has some of his own players who understand his way of thinking.
