What we need this summer

Recommended Posts

Right so now the season has ended and the transfer window opened officially on Thursday, what do we need to go one step further.

Let's start at the back and go forwards

Collin is probably going to be kept on. Fitzsimons and Pindroch will most likely stay

Left back and right back need some changing. Both starter and backup have to have the same traits. Both have to be fast, strong in defence and tackle and have the ability to get forward. Currently, in these two positions, we have polar opposites in Tootle and Hunt and Jones and Dickinson (even though Dicko does try bless his socks)

A centre back is obviously needed. Brisley and Duffy are alright but we need someone like Hall who can reassure us in defence and help play out from the back (especially at home where we need to press the opposition from the off). Jack Baldwin from Posh would be good as he's recently been put on the transfer list there and clubs will not have to pay full value for the transfer listed players at London Road as Lincoln got Michael Bostwick and Harry Anderson for less money than people thought before the start of this season (17-18).

Onto the midfield and in my opinion, we need a midfielder who will protect the defence more. O'Connor is a more forward thinking central midfielder, Husin is kind of a deep lying playmaker and I don't think 4-4-2 is his thing, Hewitt is the energy and then Noble is... well Liam Noble.

Two new wingers with more end product than Alessandra and Hawkridge and two wingers who have more consistency than Alessandra and Hawkridge. Someone who is technical, pacey, can beat their opponent and someone with a good finish on them. There are a few available. Leeds, Doncaster and Crawley are currently interested in Crusaders winger Gavin Whyte. I would keep an eye out for him. Kal Naismith, Alfie Potter, Lawson D'Ath.

Then there is the trouble up front. No pace whatsoever, Stead should have retired or moved on. Ameobi needs to retire in my opinion. Matt Godden is going to Peterborough so that's him out of the question. Kristian Dennis is out of contract at Chesterfield and has been offered an extension which he is yet to make his mind up about, but 19 goals in a team that finished bottom is quality. Jason Gilchrist (Southport) was the top scorer in National League North this season with 26 goals and could be worth a punt. I would also get a striker who is powerful but not exactly a target man. Maybe someone like Kane Hemmings. Mason Bennett looks like he's coming back on loan. As for Jonathan Forte, we'll just have to wait and see if he stays or not.

If we aim to have a real go at promotion this upcoming season (I'll accept anywhere realistically above 10th), we will need to sort the following out for sure.

Wing backs...

We need someone to rival both Dan Jones and Matt Tootle, if we don't get proper competition in these departments they simply won't up their game any more and it's really what we need. It's important that they're more defensive minded than that of what we have with Jones and Tootle who are both quite attacking minded players, so this will give us plenty of depth.

There's got to be another Shaun Brisley out there, this would be my main wish list - as we do really require a solid partner for him at the back. Some tall and imposing would be excellent, I don't care if they can't pass the ball all that well - I just want a no no nonsense defender who will just deal with the threats at the back. I think Duffy would succeed better if he wasn't guaranteed a place.

Moving into midfield we need some pace on the flanks, there's no doubt.

If we aim to be a passing team like what Coventry shown, then we need people who can take people on and offer sheer speed when it comes to dribbling the ball. I'd love to see someone like Craig Westcarr, he's a vastly underrated player during his time here. He could play out wide well, yet you knew he would score and this is what we need.

Then it's simply the same old request, get a young striker who can learn under the tutorship of Stead etc. Then someone who can partner Forte, pace, direct and good finishing. People want a 20+ goalscorer but this isn't always possible, provided we have someone who can get double figures that is good enough for me. We need money and an increasing fan base to settle with anything more.

We may put in bids for players if we can afford it, of course all our wishes depends on who ends up being released but I'd love a squad with true depth/quality.

I disagree @ARLukomski about the full backs. I think Jones and Grant worked well together overlapping and I think he is a real work horse, Just has to work on his distribution a bit more I think, but isn't that every league two player? Matt Tootle has done ok contributing here and there, but I do agree he needs to be pushed or challenged for his spot.

My Transfer List this Summer:

Jordan Smith (Nottingham Forest) - maybe to replace Collin.

Siriki Dembele (Grimsby) - A fast, exciting winger that could work well providing Bennett came back.

Mason Bennett (Derby) - Not much more to say, hes too good for league one never mind league two.

Kane Hemmings (Oxford) - Not sure if Oxford would loan him out again due to their league status this season.

Dujon Sterling (Chelsea) - Maybe a loan move for the youngster could be the thing he needs, was tipped to be a super star at one point and he is hoping to climb through the ranks quickly.

There would be a few more but right now it is hard to judge with the transfer window only just about to start.

As for centre halves mate we have an excellent one who will hopefully get another year and get the chance next year in Pierce Bird

Plus also when are we going to give our youth a chance?

Sam Osbourne is the winger we have all been crying out for all season, quick, direct and skillful, Remaye Campbell is a million pound player in waiting and I don't say that flippantly and like I said above Pierce Bird is a very good player, yeah he might make the odd mistake for the next year but he's only gonna get better playing in the first team.

Look at Coventry, four / five experienced players and the rest young players mainly from their academy.

They haven't done too badly

@Northants Pie He needs a proper loan spell under his belt. Maybe a season long loan at somewhere like Alfreton Town or Nuneaton, somewhere with a National League status

He doesn't he needs to be playing in the first team alongside a Richard Duffy, hes been out on loan lets give him a chance, what is everyones issue with giving kids a chance?

@Northants Pie Don't get me wrong I am all for giving youth a chance as stated in a previous article. However you can't chuck a 19 year old kid with no league experience into a "promotion" challenging side. Also Duffy is useless much prefer Brisley. Its about development in the youth academy, not just chucking them in at the deep end and hope they do well. Bird will get his chance and after watching him in pre-season last year he looks promising. I can't comment for Remaye Campbell as I have not seen him play, but I agree with you on that front. Also it makes good business sense for Hardy to get rid of the deadwood like Hunt and Smith on a high wage and replace them with new exciting talent.

Quite a few changes needed imho. First of all though is the tactical rethink. We can not continue to play hoof ball all the time. We always look most effective when we zip he ball around and taking Friday night as the example, by far the only period we dominated was when we strung a few passes together after half time.

Keeper is a weakness imo, but Collins isn't a massive issue. In a 'champ man' scenario yes you would replace him, but in real terms him or Fitz will be ok for keeper with other areas needing more work.

Fullbacks. Jones is good at what he does - as has been said above the back up is the polar opposite. Dicko is not and never will be a flying full back and we need consistency of approach. Same on the other side with Hunt. He really needs to depart!

Notts have struggled with CB for a few years now. Brisley seems to be solid most of the time and would benefit from a consistent partner with height and confidence to impose themselves on players. Duffs doesn't do that at all. New CB.

Wings. Wow. Weak at the minute. Don't rate Alessandro or Hawkridge. Both need to leave and we need depth here. Young, hungry and pacey tricky wingers are what we need. Balls in and good line huggers who can beat a man. 2 wingrs for first team needed with backups. I'd release Hawks and Aless.

Centre. I think we have too many options here tbh. Liam Noble has been good one game then very poor the next. We can't carry passengers next season so It would be a close call keeping him on imo. Especially with O'C returning to finess to partner Hewitt. Also not that impressed that Milsom hasn't been given a fair crack this season. Understood when Yates was here as he was superb, but since Xmas I would have given him a fair run. Hewitt needs to keep progressing and add killer passes to his game now. He is a defensive middle man, but he could look up occasionally!

Up front. We all know this is our biggest weakness next year. Without two or three new strikers we are knackered. Jon F has been great when he's had a run, but he's not getting any younger either. We need to move the age of the team down massively by releasing Shola and (yes I know he triggered his extension) Stead IMO. We wll never break the hoof tendency with those still here.

May all seem harsh, but I think for us to genuinely keep up at the top and, importantly, stay up hen we go up, I think we need young hungry players with PACE.

I have enjoyed this season, but I do think we have been 'found out' now and, decisions aside, Cov were far better than us. That quick pass and breaking into the final third and moving up as a unit is where we need to be and for that we need positive tactics so I hope KN sees that and moves us in that direction.

@Northants Pie it's not that we don't want to give youth a chance, it's because some are not ready yet. Hodge, Saunders, Osborne, Howes, Campbell etc need game time and development in the National League. Bird I would maybe introduce into the first team a little but not rush him. Gradually bed the players into the first team.

@Northants Pie

I would love Bird to step up, I just don't think he will. He looks a bit lightweight from what I've seen and I'm not sure Nolan will get the best out of him.

Why did we do it then with Virtue, its not about what you hear on sky sports, its about giving them a chance

The thing is he won't get strong enough until he plays in the league, Virtue got stronger through this

Hodge & Saunders were signed as part of an old pals act, nothing more nothing less, they're both sh1te.

Howes could do with a loan but Campbell needs to be gradually brought into the first team, Osbourne has proved he can do it so why don't we let him?

we need to look to sign quality players, preferably a mixture of young experienced players 21-26 and a few others who have the advanced type of experience. ameobi has made a massive difference to the club, same as stead.

main areas are goal, defence and strikers.

Keepers - Fine

Fullbacks - backup needed to both Toots and Jones.
CB - new starting CB needed.

Wings - Need both wingers. Pace and ability to beat a man, please.
CM - If we get rid of Noble, need another maybe.

ST - Need younger strikers. Probably need 2.

So that's 8 new signings I would say. 5 starters, 3 backups.
