  1. Mike Dean declined to use VAR to save 'mate' and fellow referee Anthony Taylor from 'grief' - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/66612570

I find this shocking on the part of Mike Dean. I get that referees are subject to alot of abuse and grief but surely that comes with the territory of being a referee?

The whole point of VAR is to catch anything the referee has missed on the pitch. The fact that Mike Dean spotted the incident but rather than telling his "mate" to go to the screen, he allowed the game to go on as though nothing happened to save him from grief.

This is why VAR gets as much criticism as it does because the people behind it don't utilise it correctly.

  2. Another bit of positivity the Lionesses can take from reaching the final of the World Cup is that they managed it at half capacity.

Leah Williamson, Fran Kirby and Beth Mead all out injured. Millie Bright was a doubt for tournament leading up to it Not to mention the likes of Jill Scott and Ellen White both retiring.

If they can achieve what they did with these sort of problems, imagine what they could do at full capacity.

  3. I was talking to a mate about this the other week. There's a special feeling amongst this group and the fans. Last season demonstrated that and it's good to see it's carried on into the new season.

Luke Williams highlighted how much it means during his post match interview after the donny game. You could see how much it means to have such a great backing behind the team and it made him emotional just how much they support this group and are backing them all the way.

There's a real good factor and I really hope it continues.

  4. Didn't get to see the game on Sunday. Went to Skegness Aquarium and trip to the beach but got back to the caravan for the 13 minutes added time.

Plenty of people were out and about around Ingoldmells and Skeggy in England tops, face paints and flags. Great to see how far the Women's football has come.

From what people have told me about the game and from the read up on the game, it didn't sound like the Lionesses played particularly good which is a shame really. But all that aside, it's a great achievement reaching 2 consecutive finals and it's only the Lionesses first competitive defeat under Wiegman.

The Lionesses can hold their heads high despite defeat.

  5. Didn't get to watch or listen to the game but the bits I have read it didn't sound too bad.

The one thing that I am baffled about is that we are 3 league games in and some are already taking to social media to express frustration. Since the opening day defeat, we're looking like settling in. Slowly but getting there.

I like to see this game as 1 point gained rather than 2 dropped. Plus a clean sheet.

  6. @Chris 100% it happens to often and players have had it easy but it's gonna take time before it's fully made aware off.

There needs to be no bias towards larger named players though, some officials seem to be wary of upsetting them.

Different scenario but like Messi in the World Cup and in the North American League Cups. Handball on both occasion which is an obvious booking both times yet he didn't get one because he had already been handed a yellow and would've meant sending him off.

  7. Course it could lead to misuse by referees, especially those that like to stamp their own authority, but same could be said about players. Far to long now players have been getting in referees faces and causing problems on the pitch which has gone unpunished which then makes them do it more as they don't feel that anything will come of it. It's a fine line.

I agree with @KingWilliams Taunting and gesturing do need punishing. Take Joey Barton v Man City in that Agueroooooo game for example. He was being taunted which then led him to knee a player in anger on his way off the pitch. Taunting can make a small incident being handled by the referee turn into something ugly.

I think players should be allowed to explain about why they disagree with decisions but not throw abuse or ask for a referee to book or send off a player. That's what the referees and var are for, obviously they do get decisions wrong but that's just the way it is sometimes.

  8. Actually managed to watch the match despite being at work. Gaffer allowed us to have the TV on and watch it but if something needed to be done then we'd have to get back in the yard to get the job done. Fortunately nothing needed doing and we got to watch the whole match 😅

It was an more comfortable game than I was expecting tbf.

The Lionesses did brilliantly well and are one step closer to becoming European and World Champions consecutively.

Let's hope they can get the job done on Sunday.

  9. I was watching the EFL highlights last night and in the game between Rotherham and Blackburn, Rotherhams Onyedinma was given a second yellow for gesturing to the referee for a Blackburn player to be given a yellow.

This is something that has irritated me for years when a player immediately goes up to a referee to try and get a player booked by gesturing a card with their hands. So it was great to see the referee hand out a yellow to a player doing just that.

I believe it was Julian Dicks mentioned this particular thing on That Peter Crouch Podcast. He said he was involved in a game where a player tried to get another sent off by gesturing to the referee about handing out a card. But as he put it, why are you trying to get another player carded or sent off?

Hopefully, this happens more often where players are booked for telling the referee to hand out cards.

On a side note, I did notice that Suttons number 9, who waved Stone off last weekend, was sent off and a Barrow player did a double wave when he was given his marching orders 😂

  10. The game against Colombia was never going to be an easy one. The crowd was hostile and had a major threat in Caceido, who is a really talented player bright future ahead for her.

It was a tough, scrappy at times, kinda game. I can't help but feel that Lauren James would have thrived in a game like this. Not much room to move around the middle, which she'd excel at as she likes to carry the ball taking on players to make things happen.

The referee seemed to let some clattering "challenges" go. The ones on Daly and Hemp should have been given as a foul but the referee just allowed the game to continue.

I still don't believe for a second that the opening goal from Colombia was a shot, it was a miss hit cross that looped over Earps. However, Mary Earps positioning was all wrong. Had she been more in the centre of the goal as opposed to the front post she might have kept it out. Fun fact: Mary Earps is the first ponytailed England goalkeeper to be lobbed by a South American at a World Cup since David Seaman against Brazil in 2002 (saw this do the rounds on Social Media) 😅

A sense of fortune about the equaliser. The goalkeeper should have done alot better. But, have to give credit to Lauren Hemp she readied herself and stayed alert incase of a loose ball which paid off as she latched on to the fumble by the keeper.

Russo played brilliantly yesterday her defensive work was great and she fully deserved her goal.

The Lionesses weren't dominant in the game but they dug in, fought till the end and got the result to book their place in the semi final which again won't be an easy game by any stretch.

I agree with Emma Hayes on commentary that this game was calling out for 2 pivots in the midfield as they struggled to get much of the ball or keep hold of it.

Unfortunately for me, I won't be able to catch the next game or even the final if they make it. But I'll still be keeping my eye out for the results.

  11. Managed to catch the highlights on the EFL show last night as well as the extended highlights on YouTube.

I did feel the goals were poor to concede though. First one sloppy pass back from Nemane, Rawlinson just gave up the chase on the ball but there was no real closing down from Brindley to block the shot. Second goal, defenders stepped up a bit late that allowed Clifton to stay onside from a chipped pass. Even if he didn't go for goal himself, there was another player free for him to square across.

Jones had a terrific game from what I saw looked a real threat down that left and it paid off. Deflected cross leading to the equaliser as well as a magnificent bit of skill to get passed the defender and whip in a ball for Crowley to head home the winner.

Langstaff looked a threat. Unlucky not to get a goal when he had his header saved which eventually led to Bostock grabbing his goal. Although, I feel he should have done better with his effort that went over the bar. But his goal will come and when it does I expect him to go on and grab more.

I think this game showed there's still some work that needs to be done but I agree with Luke Williams post match interview that this is the Notts he wants to see and it's coming together again.

the Champions League and European football offers much more than just money. There will be no shortage of good players.

I agree. However, when players who are on say £150k a week are being offered £400k they're more likely to accept it irrelevant of what European football offers. Of course there are exceptions like Messi and Mbappe.

China had a spell where they were trying, it's really not sustainable what the Saudi league is attempting to do.

Difference between the 2, as they highlighted on the podcast, is that the Chinese government pulled the plug on letting them fund as they did where as the Saudi league it is the government doing it. The clubs are owned by the state that have shares in both Newcastle and Chelsea.

The money isn't sustainable but this is why they're doing what they're doing so that they have a means to fall back on or increase their wealth. If their source of income starts to run low, they will have all these stars in the league which will start gaining plenty of income add on to the likes of Golf, WWE and Boxing which they're dipping into now as well.

I can't see it stopping anytime soon but I think the players and stupid money might get a little lower as time goes on. I think they're using what ever money they like at the minute to give them a kick start.

90s italian teams started signing better players because they waved taxes and lowered them. people will go where they earn more and teams will always cough up what they dont have in order to buy a player.

I read the other day of top transfers in the 90s and Serie A made up about 90% of the most expensive transfers in the window. As for teams coughing up, again you're not wrong, teams will stand their ground and say they want a certain fee and eventually they get that fee cause the teams don't want to lose out on their target. Hence the term "English tax" which should really be termed "Premier League tax"

  13. I enjoy listening to the trio of Shearer, Lineker and Richards so when their new podcast, the rest is football, released on Monday I had to give it a listen.

But there was something that Micah said when talking about players going to the Saudi league.

This isn't a direct quote but it's the gist of what he was saying.

The Premier League have been out spending everyone for years and no other league has ever been able to compete with the Premier League financially but no one's really kicked up a fuss about that. Now, there's this other power come to challenge them financially and all of a sudden it's an issue.

Personally, I think Micah makes a valid point. Transfers have become ridiculous over the years and it says alot when you have teams like Bournemouth being able to offer more money than top teams in Serie A, La Liga etc.

The Premier League broke away to become this superpower that it is today but they're out financed by the Saudi's by a long way.

Plus there was a bit that Lineker mentioned about some fans these days don't support teams they support players so like Ronaldo, who is a brand now himself, goes to Saudi all of a sudden viewing figures for the Saudi league will increase. Same with the MLS with the arrival of Messi.

What do you guys think? Does Micah have a point on this?

  14. Listened to Luke Williams interview last night and caught the highlights earlier on today.

Both goals seemed avoidable and I can see why Luke Williams sounded and looked very disappointed in the way we conceded especially the first as he mentioned it wasn't even that they out jumped on of our guys to head in it was the fact the managed to get the first touch and got the second to score.

The second goal, sloppy pass and lack of closing down the ball allowing them to push forward and a free man to capatilise on the rebounded effort.

As for the Baldwin red card, I also agree with Williams comments that it was needless just let it run through to the keeper. Silly second yellow to have.

It could have and probably should have been 3 or 4, fortunately it wasn't.

It doesn't sound or look good when there is such a lack of attacking threat happening in the game.

It was nice to hear Luke Williams thoughts on the game though, as he said if the opening game wasn't as bad it was this game against a team a league higher wouldn't have been taking as badly as it is but cause there's already a dark cloud over Notts after the first game there needed to be more.

Off the pitch, I get the first 2 games have gone bad but let's not jump on the negativity bandwagon. There's still a long way to go and one less Cup competition could prove beneficial in the long run for the league. Keep the faith and back the lads.

  15. @DangerousSausage they did 5 subs last season. They used lock down period as like a trial for it. But yeah it definitely helps teams with bigger budgets deeper squads.

I thought it was an automatic yellow as well for kicking ball away but on commentary they reiterated the point of players were told before the game that cautions will be handed out for anyone doing stuff like that.

The fact that Arsenal scored so late may also point to the fact that time wasting can come back to bite you and may help stamp that out too.

Exactly this, it will stop teams using tactics that run down the clock with "tactical injuries" etc

  16. @Fan of Big Tone few people have issued concern about travelling home from games, especially away games, due to not knowing how long added time will be.

57 minutes ago, Fan of Big Tone said:

I also noted that when players go off injured they have to wait 30 seconds before being allowed back on by the ref, that’s a long time to be down to 10 men if you’re desperately defending.

This might stop players going down like they're severely injured when it's nothing. Something that did need clamping down on. Far too often players went down like they'd been shot only for them to miraculously recover within moments.

  17. I haven't had chance to listen to the post match interviews or anything but I did watch the highlights on Instagram.

The goals looked avoidable and highlighted problems we may have defensively. Also, the back pass from Cameron that led to Stone being sent off was absolutely horrendous.

The 4th goal though looked like there was a foul near the halfway line in the lead up to the goal.

On a positive, Langstaff did superbly well in setting up McGoldrick for the goal.

As disheartening as the result may have been on our EFL return, I hope fans continue to back the team rather than turn on them as it was only the first game of the season and things can only get better. Let's hope this was just a blip and better things are to come in the season.

  18. New Rule changes were on full display for the upcoming season in the community shield yesterday between Arsenal and Man City. Dissent and kicking the ball away results in an automatic yellow card as well as changing the way the time is added on.

I'm actually in favour of these changes as it will hopefully stamp out time wasting and players have more to think about before doing some things that could stop the flow of the game which could allow a more free flowing game.

What do you guys make to the new rulings?
