  1. Perhaps he's operating on a shoestring budget at Hartlepool and feels he can take Stockport further? But the money they're throwing at him no doubt made the decision an easy one 🤑

It must be soul-destroying for Pools fans to lose a promotion-winning manager to a team a division below, and of course it's a crude attempt from Stockport to buy promotion. It's easy to take the moral high ground, but it feels a bit hypocritical at our end - we have several players who could've been playing higher up, but chose to join us instead. There's a handful of NL clubs, us included, that can blow most of League Two out of the water financially, so things like this will happen.

  2. The results:

    Huddersfield Town 1-0 Millwall
    Swansea City 3-0 Peterborough United
    Cambridge United 1-0 AFC Wimbledon
    Portsmouth 1-0 Bolton Wanderers
    Barrow 1-2 Rochdale
    Leyton Orient 5-0 Hartlepool United
    Bromley 0-0 Halifax Town
    Eastleigh 1-0 Maidenhead United

For the first time this season, @ARLukomski has this week's highest score with 8 points!

And on that bombshell, @Dripsey3 has once again overtaken @Dan to take top spot, while @gtownjohnno still lurks ominously in third.

Because of this new fangled "FA Cup" that we have decided to participate in this season, the prediction league will be taking a week's break. The next fixtures will be on Saturday 13 November, so expect to see the next round posted here the Wednesday before that. In the meantime, I will float around the board offering nuggets of wisdom on important matters, such as: which 80s players had the best moustaches? And did Clive Platt really have a 19-year career in the Football League, or was it all just a fever dream? Take care!

I hope Hewitt can complete a triple relegation to the National League😉

I remember seeing an interview from Clough at the start of the season, when he tore into Hewitt's "efforts" at right back. The news that he's quite possibly the worst right back in the entire world obviously hadn't reached him.

  4. Was just missing the glamour of League Two, so had a look at the table. What on earth are Mansfield doing? Down in the relegation zone and without a win since about 1982. Are they missing their annual jollies to Meadow Lane?

I thought they might be onto something with a seasoned manager like Nigel Clough, but instead they're doing a passable impression of us. What's going on?

  5. Before you all start carving your pumpkins, there's another prediction league round to play. As usual, the fixtures all kick off at 3pm on Saturday, and remember your jokers!

In our overall table, @Dan and @Dripsey3 now both have more than 100 points - it took five more rounds to reach that milestone last season. Looks like I've got to dock a lot of points if I'm to have a hope of winning it this season ;)

  7. Sounded great on the radio, looking forward to seeing the highlights! Some more performances like that and we'll start to close the gap.

Also great to hear that Vincent has made a big impact, I think a few of us had quietly written him off as a Patching-type signing. It's good man management too, as squad players know that good performances will be rewarded instead of the manager always picking his favourites regardless.

  8. The results:

    QPR 1-0 Blackburn Rovers
    Sheffield United 1-2 Millwall
    Gillingham 1-0 Doncaster Rovers
    Portsmouth 0-4 Ipswich Town
    Rotherham United 0-0 Wycombe Wanderers
    Harrogate Town 2-2 Tranmere Rovers
    Oldham Athletic 1-3 Walsall
    Salford City 0-0 Rochdale

Congrats to this round's winner, @Megan_Elizax! Round 13 was unlucky for most of the rest of us...

The next round is on Saturday, and the fixtures are here! See you over there...

  9. To round up what the Germans would call an "English week" (a week with matches on the Saturday, the Tuesday and the following Saturday), it's time to dig out those well-worn crystal balls once again. Kick-off is Saturday at 3pm, and remember your jokers!

Did any 1 notice Eli Sam and his horrific last minute miss kick.... No Puskas award for that..... He should have won the game for us...

Just seen the highlights - ouch. To be fair he was looking to square it, but he squandered a promising break. Rodders was unlucky with that free kick (part of the ball looked to be over the line, but not quite all of it), and Roberts would have buried his chance if he'd thought about it a bit less. Other than that, far too little. No disrespect intended, but our strongest team bar Wootton MUST be beating Southern League opposition, however well they acquit themselves.

Good to see the away end looking full. Shame they weren't rewarded.

  11. The results:

    Millwall 0-2 Luton Town
    Nottingham Florist 2-1 Blackpool
    Cambridge United 2-2 Ipswich Town
    Fleetwood Town 3-0 Crewe Alexandra
    Lincoln City 2-1 Charlton Athletic
    Bradford City 2-2 Bristol Rovers
    Crawley Town 0-1 Sutton United
    Exeter City 2-2 Newport County

This week's winner is @gtownjohnno with 13, while @Dan also made double figures. Congrats!

Getting a slight sense of deja-vu here - @Dan has once again overtaken @Dripsey3 to take top spot, while @gtownjohnno moves a bit closer to the top...

But there's no time for any of you to rest on your laurels - the next round is on Tuesday, so the fixtures have already been posted. Go and give it your best shot!

  12. Hi everyone, it's time for our first midweek prediction league in a while. The rules are the same - you get one joker - and the matches kick off at 7.45pm, so I'll need your submissions by then. Good luck!

  13. Was out and about yesterday so didn't tune in this time, so my view isn't worth much. But in general, we've placed all our bets on Wootton and the two Rs. If they have a poor day or the opposition susses us out, we haven't got much else. And that would appear to be why we've got ourselves a bit of completely unnecessary fixture congestion, with a plum tie against Rochdale the reward.

  14. 13 hours ago, Chris said:

By the sounds of what some fans feel on social media, we'll be sending out a squad that is bare-bones compared to regular starters - with suggestions that all of our key players will be rested. This can't and, shouldn't happen.

There's a bit of a balancing act here. If we make too many changes, it looks like we're not taking the opposition seriously. We shouldn't be making 9 or 10 changes. On the other hand, a bit of rotation would give some of our squad players the chance to show what they can do and could even result in a better performance. Players like Vincent, Sam and Mitchell have a point to prove and were brought in to get us back into the League - they aren't raw youth team players. Vincent in particular needs match practice. But rotation works better when the players who are being brought in and grafted onto an established spine rather than throwing together 11 players who have never played together before, so I'd hope to see Cameron, JOB et al in there too.

  15. Wow, I hadn't really picked up on that. He's admittedly not cut a very confident figure in his last couple of appearances, but he gives his all. How is singling him out going to help?

Unfortunately some people don't understand football much at all, and with social media they've got a voice. Either they find a scapegoat or it's "sack the manager" (some have been continuously calling for the manager's head ever since Cotterill left) or it's "bring in a 20-goal-a-season striker" (like it's that easy - I've seen the club criticised for not bringing in Paul Mullin, as if he'd have rejected Wrexham's Hollywood owners and 8k a week if only Notts had given him a call). Again and again.

  16. Although some teams (ahem) will spend Saturday tearing strips out of each other for the right to play the likes of Crawley Town in the FA Cup, there's a full league programme on in the Proper Leagues. And so we have round 12 of our prediction league - the matches kick off at 3pm, and you get a joker each.

    Cambridge United v Ipswich Town

    Fleetwood Town v Crewe Alexandra

    Lincoln City v Charlton Athletic

    Bradford City v Bristol Rovers

    Crawley Town v Sutton United

    Exeter City v Newport County
