I hate this widely accepted concept of a young player being deprived of a career in the game because of something which 1) is completely out of their control, 2) could still very much change in the following years (I know one guy who was 5'1" at 16 and by 19 had shot up to 5'10") and 3) isn't actually that big of a deal anyway (some of the best players in the world are/have been short, look at Maradona, Pele, Messi, Hazard - all under 5'9")?

Awful tie. An away day against an unfashionable side with a lower-league profile, poor support and a tiny stadium but who are doing very well in the Championship and are going to give us a very tough game. And what makes it worse is that them over the bridge have Arsenal at the City Ground.

Fitzsimons has definitely proven himself but Collin has age and experience on his side so when he's back to fitness he should be integrated slowly back into action (it's great to have the luxury not to have to rush him) with a view to a first-team berth, but if Fitzsimons begins racking up clean sheets and becomes indispensable, then he stays.

Cracking answers, detailed and informative. If everyone had the same approach to Oppo Views it would be perfection!

Thanks for the comments all. This article was always going to be controversial due to how opinionated it is, how far I stick the boot in with regards to some of the shirts, and also because maybe it's a bit taboo to pass judgement on kits so early after they've come out - usually it's only when they're universally deemed bad that it's alright, otherwise it does dampen what should be quite a joyous occasion. I was very aware of this but hey, I'm brave enough to put myself on the line and express my opinion and take the flak.
Out of the tops I criticise, the home shirt gets off relatively lightly. Obviously I'm aware that, after two seasons of "standard" home shirts with slender stripes, there had to be a deviation from it this year, so it's just how it's fallen. It's much better than the monstrosities of 11/12 and 13/14, but I'm not going to pretend it's fabulous when I just don't rate it that highly.
The alternative outfield shirts, however, were not constrained by a need to break from the designs of the seasons just gone - they're just poor. And the goalkeeper kits appear to have had no effort put into them, hence my distaste for them.
But as I said, opinions will differ and every opinion is welcome. Even those who say I'm talking utter bollocks, it's all good, all comments welcome!

I'm planning to go to Blackburn - I'd love to go to Eddy's testimonial but I'm away on holiday.

It's a bit of an odd one isn't it? These last few days have been quite chaotic for the club, what with the public friction in the press conference, followed by honest reporting from the local media, followed by an overnight dummy-spitting incident. The board needs to keep this kind of thing under control. Given how they've purged a lot of backroom staff ahead of the new season, they can't be doing with such public and overspilling animosity. If more "replacements" need to be made - or positions restructured or deleted altogether - then so be it.

Hi AP, I've updated it to discuss the table. It's not normally me that does the round-up, but it's a fair enough point, I've made it more comprehensive now. Thanks for the pointer

As I said in the PONcast, Mansfield are gonna give us hell. We have to keep our cool but at the same time not take any s**t from them, keep to our game plan and slice through them like a hot knife through butter like I'm sure we can do.

Fantastic article. The thing is, it's a bit of a symbiotic relationship. Fans have not been as eager to come to games in the last two seasons because the football on display has been pretty poor, and it becomes a vicious circle in that then an owner might think "well, what's the point in investing then?". Not to mention the disappointments in seeing so many good players leave the club on a free, thus leaving the club without money that could be crucially reinvested. But hopefully, based on how things are going, this is changing. The Ladbrokes deal could prove one of the greatest things that has happened to this club because the signings are there and the intent is there.

Fantastically written article Jamie. Informative, well-researched and a great read. I'm personally more slanted towards the "he's young and just letting loose" but sadly we live in an era where the proliferation of social media has lead to what I call the CUT culture - click, upload, tag. We've effectively Big Brothered ourselves, and as much of a shame as it is, it needs to be taken into consideration when going out on the piss. I'm sure Jack will learn from this and take more caution next time he's out, or pick better friends who will recognise his de facto ambassadorial role and position in the public eye and not be so snap-happy next time.

Brilliant write-up which gives plenty of food for thought. The professional backroom rapport between ourselves and the other teams is something that needs to be nurtured. Even the noisy neighbours across the Trent have helped us out at times by loaning players, so even though some claim to loathe them and wouldn't have anything to do with them, they've actually done us favours in the past.

Hey guys, the team news weren't available at the time of writing but they have since been updated.

Brilliant interview. Ray Trew doesn't mess us about. I like his honesty.

I began my new job earlier this week so it's been crazy busy!

I must admit, I excelled myself with the awful puns on the Facebook page...

Thanks for your contribution Patrick, much appreciated! And may the best team win tomorrow

Good to know that he's on the mend. What an absolute nightmare of a season it's been for Notts. Hopefully he'll be back to play a part in the last month of 13-14.

Always a pleasure to write about players who have meant so much to fans over the years. It's what being a writer's all about

Thanks guys!
I have some bad news in the sense of match days - because I'm now working as a football reporter for Sports Mole, chances are they'll want me to do plenty of match days, and as luck would have it, Notts play during conventional match days. So I may not make as many Notts games as I previously managed.
However, I'll still continue to do the wall during match days (today may have been a bit off but it was my very first shift so it'll get easier to juggle everything as I get up to speed), not to mention the match reports, alumni etc. I will also make a massive effort to post more on the forum itself, which I have previously neglected. This is an exciting time for PoN and I WILL be a part of it, I promise y'all!

Doh! You're absolutely right Tony! Duly been amended.

Just under the weather, nothing major, but it has meant staying in on Saturday night as opposed to hitting the pub! Glad you guys liked the write-up.

I enjoy writing these pieces and I enjoy people reading and appreciating them, but when the players themselves actually take the time to read them and publicly comment on them saying how much they like them, it's an incredible feeling. Michael Johnson enjoyed the one I wrote about him, and Mike himself had good things to say about this piece too:

@PoN_UNCFS @joejoneshome just read your piece and very humbled by your kind words, thankyou very much.... #greatmemory's #andfriendsNeedless to say I am a very smiley little man right now
