  1. I feel like we are gonna bottle this if we keep going the way we are. Nolan got it completely wrong yesterday. If it ain’t broken, don’t try and fix it. No idea why we went with 4-2-3-1 when it’s untried, untested and unproven with this team. Why change a formation that’s been working all season. Hunt plays everyone on for the first goal. Second one is a woeful pass by Virtue. Husin was bought off when he was doing well. Noble and Walker looked quality in the centre of midfield yesterday. Hewitt is not a centre back, we desperately need to sign some cover. Early in the second half, four good balls were put into the box with nobody’s on the end of them, showing again why we so badly need a striker. Alessandra missed a sitter at the back post. Ameobi won the penalty then afterwards didn’t look bothered. The problem is yesterday’s selection was caused by injuries and again we have no strength in depth. Luton can have injuries and replace them players with players who are just as good. Tootle is ill and we replace him with a grandfather clock.
  2. Notts County's superb unbeaten league home run has come to an end as Exeter City ran out 2-1 winners in Saturday's encounter at Meadow Lane. The high-flying Grecians, who are in the promotion mix, took the lead after just seven minutes through Jake Taylor. Jayden Stockley then doubled the visitors' lead just before half time as the Magpies struggled to click with several new players in the XI and in the absence of Matt Tootle and Richard Duffy. Jon Stead pulled a goal back for the hosts with a second-half penalty, won after Shola Ameobi was hauled down in the box, but sadly Notts could not go on to find an equaliser. 3. Woeful display by Notts. Don't agree with people saying we played well second half. We had no end product and no killer instinct in the final third. It was the 87th minute and we were passing the ball around the defence like with no rush in us at all. SIGN A STRIKER AND A CENTRE BACK PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
  4. Promotion six pointer. Need to win. Exeter win the gap is only three points. We have to win.
  5. Need to win to pull away from the chasing pack. Be nice to get another one over Danny 'blame the refs' Cowley. Not sure whether to start Virtue or Noble in midfield.
  6. Notts County kept up the pressure on League Two leaders Luton Town with a 1-0 win over Port Vale at Meadow Lane on New Year's Day. The encounter was settled by Jon Stead's penalty, awarded after the veteran striker was fouled in the box by defender Marcus Harness. Prior to their late spot kick, Kevin Nolan's side found themselves denied several key refereeing decisions, while Vale's Ryan Boot was the busier of the two goalkeepers. County's win over the Valiants puts them on 50 points, four behind table toppers Luton Town - who beat Lincoln City 4-2 - and seven clear of fourth place. 7. No idea at the minute cos some players are injured but I feel like Duffy and Forte may return as Brisley had that knock at Crawley but still managed to play the next game against Lincoln. As for Ameobi he plays 2 games then gets injured. Fitzsimons, Tootle, Brisley, Duffy, Jones, Alessandra, Hewitt, Yates, Grant, Stead, Forte If not then: Fitzsimons, Tootle, Brisley, Hewitt, Jones, Hawkridge, Walker, Yates, Grant, Stead, Alessandra Despite my selection I'd honestly I'd rather play Bird at CB than Hewitt. Hewitt is just not a CB. He really isn't and I hope Nolan realises.
  8. Notts County's unbeaten home record this season was maintained in dramatic fashion on Saturday by overturning a three-goal deficit to claim a 3-3 draw with Cambridge United. Uche Ikpeazu and Jevani Brown's brace appeared to have given Shaun Derry's side an unassailable advantage heading into the latter stages of Saturday's League Two encounter. However, goals from Lewis Alessandra, Shaun Brisley and Jonathan Forte rescued a point against all odds. This ensured that the Magpies would remain unbeaten at home this season, as well as having lost just once at the Lane this calendar year, and kept them firmly in the automatic promotion slots. 9. Notts County have been held to a goalless draw by Grimsby Town in Saturday's League Two encounter at Meadow Lane. Neither side could break the deadlock in NG2, although the Mariners arguably had the best chance of the game as Jamille Matt forced a great save from Ross Fitzsimons during the first half. Despite sitting joint-top of League Two with Luton Town before kick-off, the Magpies were unable to register a shot on target during the game and have now slipped to two points behind the league leaders. However, Kevin Nolan's charges still remain a healthy four points clear of third and six clear of fourth. 10. Notts County have reached the third round of the FA Cup thanks to a late 3-2 win over Oxford City in Saturday's second-round meeting at Meadow Lane. Richard Duffy's opener and Jon Stead's penalty saw the Magpies go ahead twice in the game. However, the visitors levelled the scores on both occasions, Rob Sinclair and Matt Paterson looking to have secured a replay for the National League South side. Jorge Grant would once again be County's hero and break City hearts, firing into the roof of the net from a yard out in the final minute to ensure that Notts were in the hat for round three. 11. Notts County claimed three points the hard way on Saturday after requiring a 94th-minute winner to see off Colchester United at Meadow Lane. Shola Ameobi's second-half penalty had given the Magpies the lead but substitute Sanmi Odelusi looked to have salvaged a point for the U's with his 89th-minute strike. However, there was time for more drama as Ryan Yates glanced home a header to seal victory for Notts in a last-ditch 2-1 win which sent Meadow Lane barmy. The result keeps Kevin Nolan's level on points with League Two leaders Luton Town and five points above the playoff places, a great position to be in ahead of a busy festive period in December and early January. 12. Need to cut out the silly mistakes and soft goals we have been conceding recently. This isn't a we'll be fine cos we're at home game. Colchester have improved recently and are now in the top half. Been on a 6 match unbeaten run. Bring Ameobi back in and hopefully Stead is ok. Stead is key for us, he brings the wingers into play and let's them get beyond the opposition wing-backs.
  13. No matter how much of a handball it was, by the sounds of it we had enough chances to finish them off before their penalty decision. Need to start picking up three points away from home more often. Haven't won away since we lost the derby.
  14. Notts County continue to set the pace at the top of the League Two table thanks to a 3-1 win over Cheltenham Town on Saturday. Jorge Grant opened the scoring on the half-hour mark when Jon Stead's layoff was convincingly rifled home by the Nottingham Forest loanee. However, the Robins restored parity against the run of play when Carl Winchester was allowed space to unleash a low shot goalwards that snuck beyond Ross Fitzsimons. Kevin Nolan's side rode their luck early in the second half but eventually came good as Grant doubled his tally before Shaun Brisley added a third to preserve Notts' great home league form and top spot in the table. 15. It’s a good time to be a Notts fan. We’re top of the league. Our manager recently signed a new contract. And we are through to the second round of the FA Cup. Alan Hardy has already said that we have an eye towards the January transfer window and this is something that excites many in the Notts fan base because despite being top of the league, we are looking to get even better, and we are trying to sustain our position in the top three of League Two. The stepping stones look already in place with the capture of Liam Noble on a free transfer. That ticks off one position which was needed; a creative midfielder. Hopefully, Kevin Nolan can bring about the best in Noble and we can see a different player to the one we saw here just over a year ago. Now we’ve got the creative midfielder out of the way, there are three key areas Notts need to strengthen to help keep our place amongst the automatic promotion places. Firstly, and most importantly, a pacey striker is a must. Age is also a factor - he must be young. All our main strikers are over thirty. We have already expressed our interest in Mansfield striker Danny Rose, but that speculation was quickly swept under the carpet by Steve Evans. We were also linked with Andy Cook in the summer from Tranmere, but the former Barrow striker stayed at Prenton Park. One player I would like us to sign is Kristian Dennis and although this may require a fee, Chesterfield are in dire straits and Hardy has already said he is willing to back Nolan in the transfer window for a striker. And I would still like to see us go in for Jerry Yates I’d rather the striker sign permanent than it be a loan. Other strikers we could potentially look at are Corey Whitely from Dagenham & Redbridge, who is currently second top scorer in the National League with eight goals. Sitting just behind him on seven is Oladapo Afolayan of Solihull Moors. Solihull are currently bottom of the National League but Afolayan has done well to score this many in a poor side, at this stage of the season. However, this might be tricky as the Moors frontman is also being targeted by Barnsley and Bolton. Alan Hardy said we are also looking to bring a winger to the club in January. This is crucial as it will provide good cover for Terry Hawkridge, Lewis Alessandra and Jorge Grant. The winger must also have a killer instinct, a good cross on him, and is good at beating defenders. Some of the wingers I mentioned in my article about who I thought we should have signed in the summer are still available and haven’t played much this season. Milan Lalkovic has only made one appearance for Portsmouth this season. Surprisingly, Pompey’s top scorer from last season, Kal Naismith, has only made nine appearances. This is lower than all the other wingers at Pompey: Matty Kennedy (13), Jamal Lowe (15), Kyle Bennett (14) and Gareth Evans (11). Although this may be a long shot, there is no harm in trying. Also mentioned in my summer article were Luton wingers Lawson D’Ath and Luke Gambin. The third part of our January transfer window business is the need for some cover at centre back. Most of the options I mentioned for the summer transfer window signed for other clubs. A centre back is a priority as Haydn Hollis doesn’t seem to be picked anymore for league games and Elliott Hewitt can’t keep covering there as he is far better suited to playing in midfield. We may have to consider the loan market for either the winger or centre-back due to the money it may cost in signing a first team striker, although we may sign the player from the club after they have released him like we did with Shaun Brisley and Mark Yeates. However, the centre back who we buy must be good enough cover as our first choice pairing of Richard Duffy and Shaun Brisley are unbelievably solid and are unlikely to be replaced in the starting line-up. Also, the defender we do buy must push Duffy and Brisley to their limits to remain in the first team constantly as Kevin Nolan always talks about competition for places. The players I have in mind but may not come off are Tom Davies and Dominic Hyam (both Coventry) and Joe Walsh (MK). If we get the quality needed in the right areas and they settle in well at Notts, then a top three position is a very realistic target. 16. Need to move the ball quickly cos last season Stevenage closed down our defence and our wing backs weren't used to being closed down.
  17. Notts County put in one of the best performances in recent years in a 4-2 hammering of Bristol Rovers at Meadow Lane on Friday night to reach the second round of the FA Cup. The visitors had led 2-0 after the first 15 minutes thanks to goals from Liam Sercombe and Stuart Sinclair to seemingly set up a long, torrid evening for the Black and White Army. However, the Magpies rallied round as a quickfire brace from Ryan Yates edged them level by the break, setting up a second half in which the hosts had their opponents under siege. Ultimately a further two goals, from Jon Stead and Jorge Grant, saw the League One side knocked out of the competition, while Notts are in the hat for round two. 18. Notts County returned to winning ways - and to the top of League Two - in emphatic style thanks to a 3-0 win over Newport County in Saturday's game at Meadow Lane. The visitors were reduced to 10 men in the 34th minute when Dan Butler was dismissed following an elbow on Matt Tootle and fell behind shortly afterwards when Jorge Grant slotted home from Jon Stead's pass. Shola Ameobi then doubled the Magpies' lead with a neat finish after 52 minutes, turning in a Grant cross. The Nottingham Forest loanee went on to score his second of the match three minutes later when he nodded in the rebound from his own saved shot. Grant sadly missed out on a hat-trick when his free kick rattled the woodwork, but Notts still saw out the game without a reply from Newport and, combined with Luton Town's defeat, went back to the summit. 19. Honestly think Saunders can become really good. Needs the finishing to go with his runs. If he adds them two together then we have a prolific striker for the future.
  20. We could definitely do with Jones back in the starting x1. Gets forward and helps the wingers. Hawkridge has definitely missed that. I'd like to see Forte start up front but can't see it happening. Be a tight game I reckon but Notts need this one to get back on track.
  21. To say we won 6 on the bounce, we should have all the confidence in the world yet we still panic with the ball sometimes. Once an opposition player comes near us we panic and hoof. I don't mind a little bit of hoof ball because this is League Two after all. It's just when we do play passing football (e.g. second half vs Lincoln) we can do very well.
  22. No sooner have Notts County got back to winning ways that they suffer another negative result, this time a 2-0 defeat at Crewe Alexandra. The Magpies were hoping to build on their 2-1 win over Barnet on Saturday with a result that would keep them top of the table at Gresty Road. However, Notts were not at the races as Michael Raynes rattled home from close range just before half time after Eddie Nolan had headed George Cooper’s free kick across goal. Crewe's win was sealed when, 66 minutes in, Jordan Bowery ran in behind to latch onto a pass from Cooper - the Notts defence caught napping once again - and steer past goalkeeper Ross Fitzsimons. 23. Notts County survived a late scare to move back to the top of League Two with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Barnet at Meadow Lane on Saturday. The Magpies went ahead on the quarter-hour mark when Shola Ameobi headed a Rob Milsom corner towards goal and Shaun Brisley made sure of the ball going into the back of the net from point-blank range. Notts then doubled their advantage seven minutes into the second half when Matt Tootle crossed for Ryan Yates, who headed home for his first league goal of the season. Kevin Nolan's charges pressed for a third, Jorge Grant belting over from close range before Jon Stead fired the ball into the back of the net only to be thwarted by the offside flag. The hosts then endured a nervy finish when Simeon Akinola drove inside the far post with seven minutes remaining, but were able to see the game out to leapfrog Exeter City up to top spot. 24. Notts County managed to claim a draw from the jaws of defeat on Saturday as their League Two game with Forest Green Rovers ended all square at Meadow Lane. The division's bottom side took the lead on the half-hour mark through Omar Bugiel and held on to their advantage until deep - and I mean really deep - into injury time, when Rob Milsom equalised for a final score of 1-1. The Magpies barely deserved to come away with anything following a very lacklustre performance against Mark Cooper's side but their point keeps them in the top two, though Exeter City are now back in first place. 25. Honestly think we'll be fine. They've conceded 26 goals in 11 games. Moniz conceded less in his first 11 games with his forget about defending tactics. Meadow Lane is a fortress as well and we have that siege mentality at home.
