Notts County put in a much improved performance in Harry Kewell's first home league game in charge but defensive issues came back to haunt the Magpies as they were held to a 3-3 draw by Stevenage at Meadow Lane.

Three times Notts went ahead in the game and three times they were pegged back by the visitors, yielding just a second point of the season.

The Magpies took the lead midway through the first half as Ben Nugent brought down Jon Stead in the box for a penalty, which the veteran striker opted to take himself as he sent goalkeeper Paul Farman the wrong way.

Stevenage countered with their first equaliser seven minutes before the break through Ben Kennedy, who turned home Danny Newton's low cross, only to fall behind again on 43 minutes when the livewire Enzio Boldewijn cut in from the left and bent in his third goal of the season from 20 yards.

However, the first half ended all square as Alex Revell leapt above debutant Cedric Evina at the far post to connect with Steve Seddon's cross and loop a header beyond Ross Fitzsimons two minutes later.

Kane Hemmings restored the advantage four minutes after the break with a smart finish from Lewis Alessandra's through ball, but Notts were pegged back yet again after 73 minutes, Danny Newton connecting with a cross and drilling home a left-footed finish from eight yards.

Pride of Nottingham vlogger ARLukomski was at Meadow Lane for the game and gave his thoughts pre, during and post-match. Check out his video!

We at Pride of Nottingham are delighted to announce the winner of our Draw PON Magpie competition.

The winner is 7-year-old Caitlyn Marie Elston who's mother Claire Knight submitted the winning artwork to our Facebook page.

Well done to the winner and thank you to every junior magpie who took part by sending in your images of PON Magpie, the Pride of Nottingham mascot.

We will be in contact with the winners parent shortly, who will have the opportunity to claim a Notts County pennant or equivalent valued prize from the club shop.

When asked about the competition, Pride of Nottingham Webmaster Chris Buckley said "When discussing potential competitions, the PON team felt it was only right to focus on something junior magpies could take part in. We left the age range open to anyone 16 years old and under."

We're really impressed by the quality of artwork that was submitted to us, it would have been nice to of seen a few more entries but overall the standard of artwork has been good to see.

There's still chance for more artwork to be sent in outside of the competition, artwork will be added to the gallery in the next couple of days on the Pride of Nottingham website.

Notts County disappointed yet again on Saturday as Forest Green Rovers ran out 3-1 winners at Meadow Lane.

The result left the ten-man Magpies rock bottom of League Two but frankly it could have been even harsher on Harry Kewell's new side.

Liam Shephard opened the scoring when he rifled past Ross Fitzsimons in the first half and, after the restart, Dan Jones walked for a two-footed lunge on Lloyd James.

Forest Green then had a goal ruled out but soon after doubled their lead when Reuben Reid capitalised on some poor Notts possession to beat Fitzsimons.

The Magpies, led for the day by Mark Crossley and Jon Goodman, were let off as Rob Milsom was not punished for a foul on Reid in the box.

Substitute Jon Stead then scored to give Notts hope, but the visitors sealed the win when substitute Dayle Grubb curled in for an easy victory.

Pride of Nottingham was at Meadow Lane to suffer alongside the rest of the Notts fanbase, but we also did our duty of interacting with supporters and taking photos.

On Sunday, the unthinkable happened when Kevin Nolan, who masterminded Notts County's Football League survival in 2016-17 before leading the Magpies into the League Two playoffs the following year, was relieved of his duties by owner Alan Hardy.

The last 18 months have certainly been an enjoyable ride, but this season, the Magpies have struggled in the league, with an opening-day draw with Colchester United followed by four straight defeats to leave the club bottom of the table.

“This is a decision we’ve made with the best interests of Notts County at heart,” wrote Hardy on the club website.

“While the beginning of our 2018-19 campaign has been bitterly disappointing, the board and I believe results and performances throughout 2018 have not been good enough overall.

“The last eight months have seen us win only eight of our 28 Sky Bet League Two matches, a run which saw us surrender our position in the automatic promotion places before suffering defeat in the playoff semi-finals.

“Our away form has also been a continuing concern, with only two league victories recorded on the road since the turn of the year.

“Ultimately, a continuation of this form would not allow us to meet our targets for the season and, having conceded 16 goals in our last five matches and being without a win in our last 10 competitive games, we feel now is the time to move forward with a new manager at the helm."

Pride of Nottingham vlogger ARLukomski has given his thoughts on Nolan's departure, so please have a look at his latest YouTube video and let us know your thoughts.

Notts County ensured that their fans would begin the weekend on the sourest of notes as Yeovil Town ran out 4-0 winners at Meadow Lane on Friday.

The Magpies thought they had taken the lead early on when Nathan Thomas turned in at the back post but he was adjudged to have been in an offside position.

Things then went very wrong very quick as Elliott Hewitt made a hash of a clearance which eventually led to Yoann Arquin crossing low for Alex Fisher to turn the ball in from close range.

County then found themselves further behind just minutes later as Wes McDonald fed a low cross into the area for Fisher to grab his second.

Fisher grabbed his hat-trick as he capitalised yet more shocking defending to guide in off the post in the second half, and there wasn't even the possibility of an ill-earned consolation as Kane Hemmings hit the woodwork from the penalty spot.

And just to rub salt into the wounds, why not add a former Notts player scoring in front of his ex-fans? Step up Yoann Arquin to make it four.

On the plus side, we do have the great ARLukomski with his first vlog of the League Two season (he's been on holibobs but is now back suffering along with the rest of us), so enjoy this vid!

Notts County began the 2018-19 season with a point in a tricky and ultimately underwhelming 0-0 draw with Colchester United at Meadow Lane.

The Magpies considerably strengthened their ranks over the summer with several high-profile signings rocking up at the club so the hope was of hitting the ground running against somewhat mediocre opposition.

It didn't go that way though, with both sides looking rusty in the first League Two game of the campaign, and the outcome was a share of the spoils and a clean sheet apiece.

Nathan Thomas came close when he controlled on the edge of the area before trying his luck with a superb chipped effort, but the opposition keeper was able to palm the effort away.

Colchester, meanwhile, had several attempts to breach Ross Fitzsimons' clean sheet but in the end it was honours even.

How did Notts boss Nolan and the fans react to the stalemate? Pride of Nottingham takes a closer look.

	Kevin Nolan on the game

“There’s lots of positives to take from it. It wasn’t the free-flowing, absolutely fantastic game or fantastic performance, but what we have seen is lots of things we can take out to be excited about.”

	The Black and White Army

	Liampie

it was okay for the first game but if kn wants fans to give their complete backing he needs to get them playing football. there was a lot of negativity flying around and i think the performance burst a few bubbles but its early.

	Samwatto2008

Really disappointing performance from Tootle. Really let the defence down today, caught out too many times letting Szmodics run free. He also failed to release Boldewjin a number of times and failed to utilise his strengths. Overall though I am happy with a point against Colchester as they will be pushing play offs this year. Think if Norris came on or started this would have been a different game. Stead put in a lot of effort which saw him get an applause when subbed but he was missing and just isn't going to find form this season I don't think. Thomas looked quick and sharp, Hemmings also. Not sure which CB I would drop at the moment though as Hall needs to be in. Heart says Duffy, Head says Brisely. Happy with areas of the game though and there is still lots to work on.

	The Heff

It looked like a team that was new with playing with each other, I think several players was nervous and found it hard to lift their performance accordingly.

	KingKev

It wasn't as bad as some are suggesting, Notts did play well in spells but too many players had an off day.

	Menzinho

I think Colchester will be pushing for play-offs this season, so all in all not a terrible start to the season. The expectation was high, but as we've seen through pre-season no-one's really got going yet and the wayward passes coupled with some terrible first touches made it feel like just another pre-season game. Very hard to really gauge anything from the match, Cambridge away will be interesting though, both teams should be going for the win...

	CliftonMagpie

It's early days, but I felt like Notts was quite relaxed and never focused on pressuring Colchester. They looked a good side and I would be more positive if I was a U's fan, Notts just needs to focus more on passing forward.

	Ian Ale Goode

no excuses we was rubbish end of let's hope we improve big time

	Mick Jones

Need to give the team time to gel and that won't happen overnight. Also the likes of Hemmings and Dennis and a few others have yet to reach full fitness yet. My only real concern is that we're still poor at the back with no real changes having been made in that area of the team.

	Jimmy Gee

Poor start to season. Should be playing to a plan from kick off... there was none!

	Cecil Richardson

Stead is not a target man why cannot Nolan see that

	Dave Woolley

Should have played Dennis with Hemmings from the off. Then if Dennis got tired change it. There was no way we were going to win a battle in the air....

	Steve Blyth

Never first to the ball and to be honest half of them didn’t look fit !!

	Dan Simpson

It's tough to pass the ball around though when they do and everyone starts moaning because it's not going forward. If you want Notts to play football...

	Michael Rimmingtom

100% crap ok first game but expected better. Play football not hoofing the ball and hoping for the best. Still a points a point.

	Alex West

Think we missed husin. Hewitt was poor. Vaughan was ok but lacked the options. Boldewjin was targeted but created the most. It will come together I'm certain of that. Just a quick note - we lost 3-0 first game last season.

	Antony Staples

Poor... long ball doesn't work for the players we have!!

	Nick Norman

First game don't panic. They are favourites for a playoff place

	Ian Ale Goode

total rubbish new team same old tactics get a grip Nolan no team work hoof the ball back passing was rubbish one chance to score all that money spent and no improvement

	Michael Hill

Frustrating, Dennis is wasted. Noones looking to find the strikers

Another weekend, another pre-season friendly, another seven notches on the calendar, another week closer to the start of the 2018-19 season.

On Saturday, Notts County had the privilege of facing none other than the team that defied odds of 5,000-1 to win the Premier League title in undoubtedly the biggest fairy tale in sporting history, ever.

Although Leicester City have not been able to mount another title challenge since the magical 2015-16, they nonetheless enjoyed a superb Champions League run in 2016-17 and finished in the top half of the table last time out.

But obviously none of that compares to the opportunity of facing the oldest professional Football League club in the world at the magical Meadow Lane, does it?

And the Magpies got off to a great start through Lewis Alessandra, though goals from Wes Morgan, Hamza Choudhury, Demarai Gray and Islam Slimani saw the Foxes eventually run out 4-1 winners.

Notts County played their first home game of the 2018-19 programme at the weekend as they hosted Derby County in a pre-season friendly.

Magpies boss Kevin Nolan fielded a strong starting XI against the Rams, who have England and Chelsea legend Frank Lampard on board for his first job in management.

Things did not go quite to plan for Notts, as teenager Luke Thomas scored twice to send the Rams into a 2-0 half-time lead.

Former Notts loanee Mason Bennett and Tom Huddlestone were also on target for the visitors after the break.

Kane Hemmings netted a consolation for the Magpies from the penalty spot in what ended up a heavy 4-1 defeat for the hosts, who will have much to ponder following the encounter.

Even though we're in the off-season at present, we've still had plenty of football action to go by over the last few weeks.

First of all the World Cup, which has been an absolute spectacle from start to near-finish, not to mention England doing so well to get to the semi-finals and indeed continuing their participation with the third-place playoff.

At Meadow Lane, meanwhile, we're very much in the full swing of pre-season, with players coming in and friendlies being played out.

It's effectively been a seamless transition from international football back to club football, and by the time the World Cup ends, it'll only be a few weeks until the season is back underway!

Pride of Nottingham was at Greenwich Avenue for Notts County's 3-1 friendly win over Basford United and was also at club shop on Monday to meet new signings Enzio Boldewijn, David Vaughan and Nathan Thomas.

Our photographers took snaps of the action and of the Black & White Army, so why not check out our Faces of PON galleries if you were at the events to see if you're among the papped peeps?

Notts County have unveiled their new kits for the 2018/19 season.

The Magpies released teasers of the new Puma shirts throughout Friday before the full unveiling in the evening.

The home kit retains the vertical black-and-white stripes that Notts are famous for and "pays homage to the very popular kits of the 1990s by incorporating yellow into the design".

The away kit, meanwhile, "sees the Magpies continue with their cool combination of blue and white – with a pinstripe twist".

Pride of Nottingham came down to Meadow Lane on Saturday morning to get their hands on the new home kit, on sale as of 9am.

The away kit will be on sale in the coming weeks.

It's definitely been a bittersweet day today at Meadow Lane.

The club has unveiled its new kits for the 2018/19 season, and the home shirt will go on sale tomorrow.

In addition, it's the first day of pre-season, so now it's collision course for the friendlies and just over a month away until the league starts again!

Alas, we've had to bid farewell to Mike Edwards, the very definition of "stalwart" and a man who is thoroughly loved among the Black and White Army.

The talented defender enjoyed two spells at Meadow Lane, making over 300 appearances, and also took the captain's armband, as well as spending the last few years as a coach.

To pay tribute to Steady Eddy, we at Pride of Nottingham have shared your photos alongside him!

Feel free to send over your pics with Edwards and we'll add them to the gallery!

A plaque commemorating the foundation of Notts County was unveiled at Nottingham's Mercure Hotel last weekend.

Previously known as the George Hotel, the location - just off the city centre en route to Hockley and the Lace Market - was where "Notts Foot Ball Club" became official following a committee meeting within its walls in December 1864.

Colin Slater, who has reported on the club for more than 50 years as part of BBC Radio Nottingham, revealed the tribute outside the hotel in George Street on Sunday.

The Nottingham Civic Society and Notts fan Andy Black commissioned the black and white plaque at the entrance to the hotel.

Staunch Notts fan Deryck Flowers was at the occasion and took pictures as the plaque was unveiled.

Feel free to look through the pictures and let us know what you think about them and also the occasion!

Notts County's Wembley dream came to an end on Friday night as Coventry City ran out 4-1 winners in their League Two playoff semi-final second leg at Meadow Lane.

Level at 1-1 on aggregate following the first leg, the hosts admittedly put in a dire first-half performance as Maxime Biamou and Marc McNulty struck in the first half to put the Sky Blues in control.

Jorge Grant pulled one back for the Magpies before the break while Jonathan Forte had a perfectly good goal disallowed for offside.

Biamou then scored again in a move which saw two separate offsides in the build-up and Tom Bayliss added another late on to end County's dreams of promotion to League One.

Pride of Nottingham vlogger ARLukomski was at Meadow Lane to document the occasion, giving his thoughts throughout the game and in the aftermath.

So here it is folks, the biggest game of Notts County's season so far and hopefully the penultimate game of our campaign is upon us.

Coventry City come to Meadow Lane for the second leg of our League Two playoff semi-final on level terms, though it shouldn't be the case.

The Sky Blues won a completely undeserved penalty late on in the first leg at the Ricoh Arena which they converted for a 1-1 scoreline.

But as much as it's totally justified, there's no point crying over spilled milk - this is a cup final for us and we best buckle up and get on with it.

In this article, Pride of Nottingham looks at some of the pre-match quotes from both camps as well as having a look at the provisional team news.

	Kevin Nolan on the game

“I’m just going to enjoy it. There’s no pressure on us. We weren’t expected to be here.

“The only pressure we’ll be feeling is what we put on ourselves because, like Coventry, now we’re here we want to get to Wembley.

“We know Coventry – we’ve played them three times now this season and every game’s been tough.

“It’s going to be difficult again on Friday night but I’m looking forward to locking horns with Mark Robins once again and hopefully getting over the line.

“The lads are in good spirits and looking forward to what will hopefully be another good encounter.”

Kevin Nolan on the potential of a Meadow Lane sellout

“It’s absolutely amazing. It just shows the hard work we’ve put in has all been worth it.

“We urge the people of Nottingham to buy the last few tickets because we’re going to need them – they can influence a lot that happens on the field and drive us to victory.

“We want them with us every step of the way because when they are with us, incredible things can happen - as I’ve seen during my tenure here.”

Dan Jones on potentially playing in the final at Wembley

“Playing at Wembley would be a dream for me personally. It’s an incentive you can’t even put into words.

“You’ve got to enjoy these games - everything that surrounds them and what’s at stake.

“It’s about rising to it, doing as well as you can and making Nottingham proud.”

Dan Jones on the first leg

“Lots of things from many individuals were brilliant. Forte’s flick for the goal was amazing – it was a good bit of instinctive play.

“Bris and Duffs won a lot of great headers, both wingers and the centre mids put in a lot of work and the work-rate of Steady helped us deliver what we were working on throughout the week.

“We go into the game with a lot of confidence from the other night – especially considering the conditions we had to deal with.

“They threw a lot at us – they’re very direct – and I felt we defended brilliantly.”

Former Nottingham Forest player Garry Birtles

"I am not the first to say it, but it cannot go unsaid – Notts County fell victim to one of the worst refereeing decisions the game can ever have seen, at Coventry last week.

"What referee Gavin Ward saw to make him think he had to point to the spot mystifies me.

"Matt Tootle did not slide into the challenge, he did not take out Tom Bayliss with his trailing leg, he made clear, obvious contact with the ball, which changed direction massively, as a result.

"None of the Coventry players appealed for anything. Probably because it was a perfect, clean tackle. He won the ball and made little contact with his opponent in the process.

"It wasn’t a foul, it did not look like a foul and I will never understand how the referee has come to the conclusion that it was.

"If Notts miss out on a place in the play-off final because of that decision, it will be a travesty, in a football sense.

"But I am very much hoping that they will not. Playing the second leg at home, where they have been so strong this season, in front of a packed Meadow Lane crowd – I fancy them to get the job done."

	Coventry City boss Mark Robins

“We need to send our supporters home happy.

“It will be a good game and it might even go all the way. We need to be prepared for that.

“There is plenty of enthusiasm. Ever since the game finished on Saturday we have been looking forward to tomorrow.

“We have had a mixture of rest, recovery and training this week.

“We played really well in the first leg and only made one or two mistakes, but sadly that cost us a goal.

“There is going to be a full stadium, and that is what we look forward to. The prize at the end of it is great and we have to make sure we get the process of getting to that right.

“The supporters should be excited and they should be in full voice and right behind the players. We could do with making their fans quiet.”

	Opta stats

This is the fourth time in succession that Notts County have drawn the first leg of their play-off semi-final away from home, with the Magpies reaching the final on each of three previous occasions.

Coventry haven't won any of their last eight away games against Notts County in all competitions (D2 L6), since a 3-0 victory in August 1963.

The Magpies are unbeaten in their last nine home games in all competitions, winning five and drawing four.

The Sky Blues have lost just one of their last seven away games in all competitions (W4 D2), though that defeat did come at Meadow Lane in April (1-2).

Coventry haven't been promoted from any division since winning the second tier in 1966-67.

Four of Coventry's five goals against Notts County this season have been scored in the 80th minute or later.

Jonathan Forte has scored all three of Notts County's goals against Coventry in all competitions this season.

Coventry scored with their only shot on target in the first leg - Marc McNulty's 87th minute penalty.

	Team news

Notts County could be unchanged, with Jonathan Forte expected to be fit.

However, Coventry's Tom Davies is suspended having been handed a retrospective three-game ban by the FA for his stamp on Richard Duffy.

Notts County were robbed of victory at Coventry City’s Ricoh Arena as Kevin Nolan’s men had to settle for a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their League Two playoff semi-final.

The Magpies led through Jonathan Forte’s deft second-half finish and looked on course to record a morale-boosting victory to put them in pole position for Wembley.

However, "referee" Gavin Ward incorrectly adjudged Matt Tootle to have felled Tom Bayliss in the area and awarded a penalty to the hosts much to the disbelief of the Notts contingent.

Marc McNulty stroked home the spotkick, sending Adam Collin the wrong way, to send the Sky Blues into next Friday’s Meadow Lane showdown on level terms.

Here is how the Notts contingent reacted to the Coventry Screwjob.

	Kevin Nolan

"It's been taken away from us by a referee, by a really really poor decision. That buoys the crowd and players, he misses a blatant handball too. Is he trying to even it up? Probably.

"We shouldn't have been in that position, we knew it was going to be tough, with the conditions and everything else, but we should've been coming away with a 1-0 but the referee has made a howler.

"I've just said to the lads, you obviously feel robbed and we would've taken a 1-1 before the game if we'd been handed it, but the circumstances have made it more disappointing."

	The Black & White Army

Chris: First half it was frustrating to see how much respect we gave Coventry, I mean we didn't seem to have any sort of active game plan. It was a case of hoofing it all the time, even when the ball could have been played on the floor. I know the conditions were shocking but hitting the ball forward in hope that Stead or Forte could get control over it never seemed likely to work. Besides, Coventry managed to retain the ball on the ground even in areas where the water literally stopped the motion of play - so why couldn't we?

Second half we played with a bit more of a plan and the game simply changed it all, we grew in confidence but I think we should have pushed harder for a second.

The penalty decision is beyond stupidity, there's no credible reason why the referee gave it - it's just absolutely insane that he believed it was fair foul. The player, slipped and then went down like a sack of spuds. There was no discussion over the decision, I actually think he had a very good line of view but decided to ignore 'common sense'.

I'm confident that we can lift our game and push on, we need to be stronger at home and us fans need to make ourselves known.

Disappointed but not overly bothered now, stupid decisions seems a common thing for us - we move past it. COYP!

Hissingdwarf: I think the team played to Nolan’s brief for the whole match. First half, keep em subdued and tight defending in all areas, second half, attack and push on. Worked well apart from dismal ref decision.

Michael Belshaw: Unfortunately this has been happening for a few seasons now.The quality, or lack of, refs has gone down. Also what is the point of linesman, sorry assistant referees, they are incapable of making a decision.

Richard Thompson: To add , why do goalkeepers simply flop to the floor and give up on pens and dive the wrong way? You can bet your ass if it's a free kick 1 yard outside the penalty area they will dive the right way???

Colin Metcalf: Yet another **** ref which the spineless money grabbing tossers at the EFL will do **** all about.

Mark Rogers: how anyone can make a decision on the penalty from the away stand where we were sitting at the other end of the stadium, as opposed to where the referree was right on top of it, is ever so slightly beyond my comprehension??

	Scott Weatherbed: Fix

Chris Jordan: Notts set up for and played this spot on. Robbed of a goal advantage tonight but heads should be held high after a cracking performance.

Carl Webster: To be fair we were ****... we can’t keep the ball

Paul Bruce: Forte was also kicked off the ball towards the end.

	Grant Redwood: Robbed

Darren Handley: Cheating Coventry wankers and the **** of a ref who got bullied most of the game by their fcuktard fans buckled under pressure prick

David Skelding: The penalty was an awful decision but when you sit back too long things like that can happen. I'm happy with the draw and make us favourites now.

Luke James: outrageous get the fa on it now worst ref decision for a long while

Richard Thompson: Time for refs to be brought into disrepute

Notts County's regular League Two season ended with a goalless draw against Luton Town at Meadow Lane on Saturday.

The Magpies, who had sealed a playoff place but could not go any higher than third following the loss to Grimsby Town, played out a bright game against their promoted opponents.

Neither side could break the deadlock, however, in a game that had an end-of-season team and with neither side having anything much to play for, except for where Notts would finish in the playoff positions.

As it was, Kevin Nolan's charges finished fifth in the table and would find themselves up against sixth-placed Coventry City - the side that beat them 3-0 in the season opener - in the semi-finals.
