“Jimmy Fullarton announced as new manager x” “Who” Sky Sports news it may not be, but news travels fast these days. The above messages were between me and my old man shortly after Jimmy Fullarton, an ex Scotland Under 21 captain ‘don’t you know’, was announced as Notts’ new manager. Speculation had been rife over the past week as to who would succeed Ricardo Moniz. Mark Cooper and then John Sheridan had been “odds on” for the job until midday Saturday when Fullarton’s name became all but etched on the office door. My initial reaction is one of being underwhelmed. Fullarton comes with a glowing reference from Mr Negative over the river; “an outstanding coach” crows the man with his armed tied behind his back by Mr Fridges. But is he necessarily what we need? Haven’t we just parted company with a coach who was asked to bring a more entertaining ‘brand’ of football to the club…? Also, based on our league position; is an untried and inexperienced manager the right move at this point in time? Lying 18th in League 2, the most obvious threat is the trap door. However, that’s 13 points away and isn’t a concern. The real quiz is looking up the league. Notts are only 9 points off 7th. Regardless of how poor we have been at times; we have a good number of excellent players at this level and a 20 goal (at least) a season striker. For me, we needed to appoint a manager who knows his way around this part of the football wilderness, how to organise a team (because frankly, defensively we’re an absolute shambles) and how to motivate a bunch of good but underachieving players. Fullarton may, and I pray he does, bring this to us but it could take more time than arguably a more experienced man would have needed. Being personally underwhelmed by the appointment fits somewhere in the middle on the Twitter spectrum of opinions surrounding Fullarton’s appointment. We quite obviously have those who are masking a complete gamble with “lets judge him on performances.” Absolute politician speak. We have those who are even more hacked off than they needed to be after their first week back at work; “ABSOLUTE JOKE.” And we obviously have those Notts ‘fans’ who are personally abusing Mr Trew and Mrs Trew. To those people; you’re a disgrace – get out of my club and get yourself sterilised at the same time. On the whole, the fans see this as the wrong choice and I have to agree. We’ve tried this, it hasn’t worked so we’re trying it again… Why? Whilst plenty of characters have been angrily smashed out on social media, we now have to get on with the new era. Fullarton must hit the ground running. I don’t see Notts fans giving him that long if it goes pear shaped. His first job is to sort the defence out. Haydn Hollis is good enough to be in it, probably paired with Amevor or Swerts. Hewitt and Adams at full back. This is where Fullarton will earn his money in the early days; coaching. They obviously need it, so spend time doing it. I’d stick with the current crop because will we have that much money in order to dabble in the window to bring someone in? I’d argue not. And those names are plenty good enough if they’re going to be coached properly. Oh, and don’t play Alan Smith either Jimmy. There’s a lad called Curtis Thompson, play him, he’s quite good… Manager 11 in six years (embarrassing) hasn’t even held aloft the Notts County scarf for the official website article and he’s already under pressure. The pressure hasn’t been built by himself but by what has gone before him. Trew has continued to get massive decisions wrong regarding managers and I think this one could be the same. I was asked who should come in. “Neil Warnock. Get on the phone, beg him to do 6 months and if we do anything give him the option of a year rolling contract.” In essence, we needed an old head but we got, regardless of what Mr Trew says, an absolute gamble of a manager. The fans are upset. The players are under performing. The chairman is praying this works. All of us who travel to watch Notts’s away performances are covering hundreds of extra miles in League Two compared to the journeys last season in League One. So relegation is proving costly, in financial terms, not only to the club but also to its supporters. Considering which the away following has been remarkably encouraging as proved by these figures: 331 at Oxford; 459 at Morecambe; and 547 at Kingston-upon-Thames where Wimbledon now play. The fact that the numbers continued to increase, despite Notts defeats in all three games, is probably attributable to the fact that fans looked forward to an enjoyable weekend on the coast at Morecambe and to visiting the Kingstonian ground for the first time ever. Whether it continues to be so depends largely, I believe, on results. I write at a time when it’s still in the balance whether Notts will challenge for at least a play-off place or will have to be content with a mid-table spot, which would be very disappointing, in the context that there was so much pre-season chatter about getting back into League One at the first attempt. I also write on the eve of departure for a midweek fixture at Dagenham, a distance of just over 140 miles from Meadow Lane to the Daggers’ Stadium in East London. It probably prohibits fans who have to work the following morning from even thinking of making the trip – and they’re not the only ones in the same (or worse) situation on the same evening. Spare a thought for Leyton Orient supporters, faced with a visit to Carlisle United, a five-hour journey covering 305 miles. Any who, undaunted, drive home from Brunton Park at the end of that game face the grim prospect of not arriving back until at least 3 a.m. There are numerous other examples in the season’s fixture list where inadequate consideration seems to have been given to the convenience of loyal fans. The Football League can surely do better than this. Indeed, the evidence proves that a strong case can be made for much greater consideration to be paid to the legitimate needs of travelling supporters in all three divisions, but primarily in League Two. This must include particular reference to holiday time fixtures, particularly Boxing Day. This year Hartlepool v Notts is bad enough at a time of year of family get-togethers. I rest my case! Just four times this season Notts players and fans will head to away games for venues which will be new to all of us. In chronological order they are Morecambe’s Globe Arena; Wimbledon’s Kingsmeadow; Barnet’s Hive Stadium; and Newport’s Rodney Parade. I write my first contribution to these pages shortly before driving to Morecambe for the match on August Bank Holiday Saturday. It isn’t going to be the first time that Notts have played there but the two previous visits were to Christie Park, before the move to the Globe Arena in 2010. Who can ever forget the last visit, on 19 September 2009? Not because of the result, the Shrimps winning 2-1, but because it marked the one and only appearance in the famous Black and White of Sol Campbell who had won 73 caps – and been a rock in England’s defence – in a glittering career, chiefly with Arsenal and Spurs. I wonder how many Notts fans can truly say “I was there”? I first met Campbell on the day he signed, interviewing him in the Meadow Lane boardroom but spending much longer enjoying a fascinating private conversation. After his 90 minutes at Morecambe I asked for a second interview. The truth of the matter was that, though he’d used the time between signing and making his debut seeking to get fit, he by no means contributed an impressive debut display, which probably accounted for his reluctance to be interviewed. Eventually he agreed but seemed ill-at-ease and didn’t have much of interest to say. Three days later Campbell walked out of Meadow Lane and before the end of September his contract was cancelled by mutual consent. And a few days later he returned to Arsenal. I’ve often wondered since whether I should have read more into his post-match demeanor – did it signify he’d already made his decision to pack his bags? Campbell never made any secret about the fact that he’d largely been persuaded to sign by the Notts director of football, Sven-Goran Eriksson, the two of them having got close during their time together with England. Sven could never be drawn into discussing Campbell’s abrupt departure. In the match, Morecambe scored either side of half time with Jim Bentley getting the first in 36 minutes and Paul Mullin the second on 52 minutes. Not until the 71st minute did Ben Davies reduce the arrears but Notts failed to find an equaliser. It’s worth pointing out that the defeat put Notts eighth in League Two, with no hint they were going to storm to the title at the end of April with a brilliant 5-0 rout of Darlington at their Arena. So it was by no stretch of imagination a wholly convincing start to the 2009-10 campaign, though expectations were high after a spate of summer signings. Doesn’t that resonate with what’s happening right now, in the early days of 2015-16? Between 2009 and now the wheel has turned full circle for Jim Bentley. Then he scored.
