Notts County has increased their transfer hunt as the magpies take on two trialists who are expected to feature in Saturday's pre-season friendly against Coalville Town.
Both players have been part of the training sessions, with head coach Ian Burchnall confirming that they're midfielders.
Summer signing Frank Vincent is currently carrying a knock, which is expected to rule him out of pre-season games for a couple of weeks.Β
Notts are yet to further strengthen their midfield, after Jake Reeves departed for the Football League having joined Stevenage and assistant head coach Michael Doyle taking up more of a coaching role.
Speaking to the Nottingham Evening Post, head coach Ian Burchnall said: "We've got two in at the minute, and then we'll probably have a couple more Friday and then in the game to help us out, and also it will be for us to have a look at them.
"They're interesting players so the profiles are interesting, but they're ones that maybe we can't get as much information about them as we'd like and then you have to see them first-hand.
"They are midfielders, but we will look at maybe attacking options as well." He added.
"I mean, you take the stature of somebody like that and I thought he was an outstanding player for Torquay last season. To be able to bring him in given his age and where he is in his development, I think it's fantastic for us.
"He's going to be a really good player. Frank Vincent has come in and sadly isn't 100 per cent fit. He needs a few weeks just to recover from a knee injury.
"But I've seen enough of him to see that he's a very good football player. And again, young, ready to develop. Then we signed Joel, and he is going to give us something in that wide area."
Further adding: "He has pace, that directness, that one v one. So far I am happy with the kind of profile, the age of the players and there's going to be more to come as well."

Notts County's latest recruit Joel Taylor has expressed his delight with signing with the magpies'.
The club returned to training this past Tuesday, with the squad heading backΒ to Meadow Lane after a few weeks off at the end of the last campaign.
The 25-year-old wing back praised the clubs training facilities and the playing surface, as preparation begins for their pre-season games.
Speaking in relation to his first training session, Joel Taylor said: "I do like [the training facilities],Β
"Very nice training ground, it's nice to play football."
Before adding: "Yeah, I mean, in pre-season, I know, it's about getting fit and getting back to match fitness. But when you're doing it with the balls, it makes our session a lot more enjoyable than just running around a pitch and whatnot.Β
"So with this gaffer we can see he likes to play. So a lot of the running is done with the balls, which again, all players love doing that. So with the ball is obviously the best thing."
With a return to training, Taylor met his team-mates for the first time since signing with the club.
"Yeah. I mean, I met with the lads yesterday when I signed.Β
"Well the majority of them anyway, and yeah they seemed sound - just welcomed me into the group straight off. And I feel like a part of the group already.
"I want to come here, help the team progress and get back to where they need to be, but ultimately within myself as well" He added.
"Very, very, very excited. Like I said last season, I think we played a handful of games in front of fans.Β
"So getting the fans back in especially at the Meadow Lane, where it's a big crowd. So yeah, I can't wait for the fans to come back in and play in front of them."
Joel Taylor is expected to make his first appearance in a Notts County shirt, in Saturday's friendly against Coalville Town.

Notts County head coach Ian Burchnall has spoken about adding at least four more signings to his side before the start of the 2021/22 National League season.
The magpies boss hasn't ruled out paying further transfer fees, after Notts completed the purchase of wing-back Joel Taylor from close rivals Chesterfield yesterday.
Having signed their third summer recruit, with defender Kyle Cameron first arriving and then Frank Vincent - both of which arrived as free agents. Burchnall insists that more signings are on the way, as the club once again challenges for promotion back to the Football League.
Speaking to the Nottingham Evening Post, Ian Burchnall said "We need some options in the middle.
"We know we need midfielders in and more options upfront as well. You can jump on the first thing that comes up or do we take our time and be measured and understand that it's a strange window at the moment." he added
"There's a lot of players and a lot of clubs in different situations so things have taken a bit longer than probably we thought it would.
"In an ideal world you have everybody in on day one of pre-season, but it looks like it will probably take another week or so before I feel like we're more or less done."
Further adding: "I think it really depends on the player, the circumstance and the overall package.Β
"We have to take all of those pieces into consideration. So no, it's not necessarily only free transfers. We take the full package really and assess from there."

The off-season is a special time for many football fans. The first week is a novelty, but many of us begin wondering what exactly we do with our SaturdaysΒ now the Euros have finished.Β
Such boredom drives inevitable speculation; who's off-contract, who's sought after, who are we linked with. In the era of social media and the internet, there are vast swathes of people demanding that the players who bedazzled in the league last year be signed up instantly, the galacticos of the non-league, if you will.
The thirst for these type of signings are encouraged by the endless stream of anonymous, 'in-the-know', accounts, largely on Twitter these days, who mainly throw enough mud that eventually one will stick; cue the many incorrect predictions being quickly tidied up.
For those football manager fans, my personal approach was to go heavy on the scouting, sign the best players, regardless of position, knowing they'll be good enough, or decent enough, even if not entirely in the position they like best. Reality is somewhat different.

'Philosophy' or 'club culture' are the latest buzz-wordsΒ for a rather simple thing - how does the club prefer to play football. It's relatively new for us here at Notts, as our style used to change in synchronisation with our manager - roughly every 6 months (or less).
More than most clubs, the Notts pendulum used to swing from one side to the other, without so much as a pause to think about exactly what we are doing and where we are going. Derry: defensive, rigid, direct - to Moniz: attacking, fluid, reckless.
Without diving down the rabbit hole of why and how this all happened, the inevitability is that with such drastic and instantaneous changes in style, you will find yourself with players that simply don't suite the new one.Β
It seems that tide has turned, however. A change of manager has brought in a change of tactics and play, but the style is largely similar.
There're no players that were well-suited to the previous manager that couldn't have done a similar job with the new one. This brings in a new factor to consider for our transfer policy - do we target players that are the best we can attract, or do we target the best players in the positions and roles that we need?
Sonny Carey. Brilliant player. Ripped us apart when we played KL. If you ignore the fact he has gone higher up the leagues, the next question is, where would we play him, or more importantly, who would you drop to play him? If we are sticking with 3-5-2, there are two striking positions and three central midfield positions.
Assuming one of those strikers will be Wootton, who plays close to him? Roberts? Rodrigues? If they're both playing, one of them (probably Rodrigues) will be the advanced man in that central 3.
You'd be very exposed if 2 of your central 3 were pretty much attacking midfielders, should you incorporate a Carey, or Carey-like player. Another name that came up regularly was Rhys Oates; primarily a winger.Β
We've made 3 signings so far, and they all convey to me the same message - we know the type of player we wanted, and we've got what we think will be a good fit. A summary of what we were missing, prior to these signings:
A Michael Doyle. Left-footed, central midfielder who can dictate the game through his passing ability. Capable of the killer ball. A left-sided CB, ideally left-footed, who can step out and play with the ball at his feet. A left wing back who can attack. Chicksen is solid and technically gifted, but not a winger type. We needed a more attacking LWB to replace Miller. The three players we've signed, so far, seem to be role and positionally ideal (at least theoretically).Β
The next question that naturally springs to mind is then what to expect from the further signings? For that, it's best to analyse what we have:

Noticeable is the scope for interpretation. Does 3 at the back mean this is how we line-up? Certainly not, but I've gone with more or less how we featured at the end of last season.
Secondly is just how attacking or defensive this formation varies hugely with personnel, start JOB instead of Rodrigues, Chicksen at LWB, and we all of a sudden look quite solid. Change that up and have Rodrigues, Roberts and Wootton as a quasi-front 3 with Taylor running from the wings, then we start looking dangerous, albeit a bit open. It can be assumed, I think, that those positions and players can be flexible depending on opposition or scoreline.Β
For the future signings, I'm not expecting any attacking midfielders or wingers. My personal thoughts are:
Defensive-minded, or tenacious central midfielder who can still play. Neal Bishop type would be perfect. All-round central midfielder. No special leanings one way or the other. Reeves loosely could be pigeon-holed in this category. A striker to compete and at times partner Wootton. Doesn't necessarily have to be the same type as Wootton. A RWB that attacks. Brindley and DKE are solid at this level, but neither are ones to unlock defences. A backup centre back. While Brindley and Chicksen performed amicably last season, playing a back 3 with only 3 established CB's is a big risk.Β  Head over to the Pride of Nottingham forum to discuss this feature written by Super_Danny_Allsopp, with the community.

Notts County has completed the signing of wing-back Joel Taylor.
The 25-year-old arrives at Meadow Lane after leaving rivals Chesterfield for an undisclosed fee, Taylor joins the magpies on a 2-year-deal.
He came through the Stoke City academy, before joining Kidderminster Harriers where he made 50 appearances for the club before departing permanently to Chester. The Spireites paid Β£25,000 to Chester for his services last December.
Notts County head coach, Ian Burchnall said: "We needed a wing back who could offer a threat one-against-one.
"Joel’s pace in the wide areas and his ability to attack in those moments is really important.
"He’s been playing wing back at Chesterfield and, based on the games we’ve seen, he was most effective when they were attacking." he added.
"With us being a team that wants to do that, we feel he’ll suit us well. Joel we have to look at the whole package, including his age and potential.
"He’s got the capacity to develop his game further, and we feel we can help him do that in this environment."
Via Twitter, Joel Taylor addressed the fans by writing "Delighted to get this done! Can't wait to get started."

Notts County defender Dion Kelly-Evans has agreed new terms with the magpies.
The popular 24-year-old is the last of the remaining players offered a new deal on the back of last seasons campaign.
Speculation had grown over his future, however, Notts has today confirmed that Kelly-Evans has agreed a new one-year-deal at Meadow Lane.
Via the clubs official site, Ian Burchnall said: "Everyone knows what Dion’s about, he has no off switch – be it in training or in games, he brings the same level of intensity.
"Not only that, but he’s a great lad who is keen to better himself and, with there being so much more time on the training ground this season" said the head coach.
"I’m sure we can continue to bring him on leaps and bounds. For Dion and all the other boys to have accepted our offers speaks volumes about the positive environment we’re building here and it gives us a really strong base heading into pre-season.
"Of course, we’re still working hard to bring new signings to the club. We’re being ambitious with our targets, which means a little extra patience is required, but we’re pleased with the progress we’re making." he added.
In a video posted on Notts County official Twitter account, the defender address the fans by saying: "I just want to say a massive thank you for all the support you have shown me in the last two seasons. I've thoroughly enjoyed my time here and it's been an absolute pleasure playing in front of you guys."
Before adding "I've loved every single minute of it. The memories we have created together will stay with me forever, That's why I am happy to extend my stay for another year and I can't wait for you guys [the fans] to get behind me and the boys this season.
"I am buzzing for it to get started."

Midfielder Jim O'Brien has agreed a new two-year-deal with Notts County.
The experienced 33-year-old is the longest-serving member of the squad, after Enzio Boldewijn's release earlier this summer.
He arrived at Meadow Lane in January 2019, quickly becoming a firm fans favourite for his heroics and passion on the field.
Speaking to the Notts County media team, Ian Burchnall said: "I’ve been hugely impressed with Jim’s attitude and ability since my arrival at the club, he’s got terrific energy and I think you could see how much we missed him when he picked up a couple of really unfortunate injuries towards the end of last season.
"Importantly, he understands how we want to play which gives us continuity going into the new campaign."
With Michael Doyle having agreed to become the magpies' assistant head coach, the extension has been described as 'providing continuity in the middle of the park'.
Speaking about having signed a new two-year-deal, Jim O'Brien said: "I'm buzzing, really happy. Not long after the manager came in, i had a sit down with him and told him my plans that i didn't want to go anywhere,
"I wanted to be here, so just to get it done is a bit of a weightΒ off my shoulders." He added.
"The two-year deal doesn't take away the fact that I'm here and your focused on the job at hand. We know where we want to go and you don't take your foot off the gas just because you've got a two-year deal.
"I think the messages were clear in the meetings we had, get as many bodies in the box as possible. The way we play we controlled possession, it allowed me to do that. The messages we had in training, the shape, the rotations and the runs. It was all very clear towards the training."

Notts County has confirmed the signing of centre midfielder Frank Vincent.
The 22-year-old arrives at Meadow Lane after leaving AFC Bournemouth as a free agent, having signed a two-year-deal with the magpies.
Vincent has played out on loan in recent seasons, having spells with Torquay United, Scunthorpe United and Walsall. The midfielder links back-up with Kyle Cameron and the pair helped The Gulls earned promotion to the National League in 2018/2019.
Speaking to the Notts County media team, Frank Vincent said: "I'm obviously very buzzing to get the deal done, it's been a bit of an anxious few days.
"Trying to get it all sorted but yeah just buzzing to get it over the line. Its such a big club and just can't wait to get started. I'm left-footed, I'm a midfielder. I'm a technically gifted player, I like to pass the ball, the combinations one-two's." he added
"The way i play is the way the gaffer wants to play here, lots of possession based football, but not just that, I like to pass forward, I'm not just here to get the ball and pass it sideways.
"I think I'm a risk taker in the right moment and yeah just looking to get the ball, pass forward, start attacks and i still haven't got a career goal so i was hoping to find that here and to find some goal scoring form here."
Before explaining: "Obviously i knew the interest was there from Notts County for quite a while and having spoken to Ian, I've actually been to the stadium like a month ago
"I had a good look around, had a good chat about football. His way in playing is very suited to my playing style so that was always a big factor of me wanting to come here and get this deal done."
Notts County had tried to sign Vincent when Michael Doyle became injured having played against Hornchurch, however, the deal never materialised.
Speaking on Frank Vincent, Notts County Head Coach Ian Burchanll said: "We’ve followed Frank’s progress closely," he explained.
"He’s a talented player who’s had some interesting loan moves which show he’s got the hunger to play. We’ve been impressed with him. Frank can play either as a holding midfielder or as a number eight.Β
"He covers ground well, he’s left-footed and a good passer of the ball. He suits the way we want to play and has been given a good education in that style at Bournemouth."

Notts County youngster Tyreace Palmer has signed his first professional contract with the club after signing for the academy 11-years-ago.
The 18-year-old striker has featured as part of the Notts youth team that went on to win the EFL Youth Alliance league in 2020/2021 and made his professional debut last season against Havant & Waterlooville in the FA Trophy.
Head Coach Ian Burchnall, believes that Palmer should be a part of his side after scooping the Youth Team Player of the Year, having put in good performances and a strong goalscoring record.
Via the official website he said: "Tyreace has been at the football club for a long time now.
"We’re pleased to give him the platform to express himself. while he’s also got a lot of development to come, I think he’s got potential as a goal scorer and being around our squad on a daily basis is only going to help him."
The magpies offered Palmer a professional deal back on the 14th of May 2021, and yesterday the club announced that the young prospect had signed.
Speaking on his new deal, Tyreace Palmer said: "I'm over the moon, its something I've been dreaming for since I've been at the club over 10 years, so I'm really pleased to get it over the line.
"I've been here since I was 6 or 7 years old, i signed that young and ever since I have just progressed through the age groups and I've just managed to get my contract every year." he added.
"I've been top goal scorer most years, for the under 18's two years in a row. I enjoy it, I love scoring, not a better feeling than scoring. The first week I came in, I was finding it a bit tough to get into the tempo and the physicality but from that I've really got to grips with it and I've really been impressed with how I've been progressed with training.Β
"Before my injury I was doing really well but I will have to come back stronger in the next season. I've got a micro fracture in my knee, I've been on crutches for 4 weeks. I've got rehab to do when I come back on the 12th and hopefully I won't be too long till I'm back playing.
"I'm hoping to go out on loan and get some men's football, get experience and hopefully do well out there, come back and be fighting for the bench or starting 11 if I can."

Notts County has confirmed that Tiernan Brooks and Tyreace Palmer have agreed new deals.
Brooks has already spent a season as a professional with the magpies, having signed his first professional contract ahead the 2019/2020 campaign.
However, Palmer has reached a milestone moment after securing his first professional deal.
Via the official Notts County site, Head coach Ian Burchnall said: β€œWhile he’s still got a lot of work to do,Β
"Tiernan’s a very good goalkeeper who’s shown progression, hunger and a good attitude month-on-month. He’ll take a lot from people like Sam Slocombe and Jake Kean and hopefully we’ll continue to see him progressing this season.

Notts County ace Cal Roberts has discussed his return to football after being sidelined during last season.
The North Shields born winger, who progressed through the Newcastle United academy has become a popular figure within the magpies ranks after leaving Blyth Spartans in January 2020.
After returning from injury against Hartlepool United as a substitute, Roberts only lasted a few minutes before limping off. However, the midfielder has spent his time out wisely focusing on regaining strength after having an operation.
Speaking on the official clubs' website, Head of Medical Services Marco Ferreira said: "That was the main goal and it was the decision after Hartlepool to take Cal off to prepare for the play-offs and the new season.
"We started again from 0 building confidence and building strength, and he's back on grass so its one step closer. We will build him to where he can join the lads in pre-season."
The 24-year-old vowed to come back stronger, after suffering on and off with injuries during the 2020/2021 National League season.
Speaking about his return to training Cal Roberts said: "You never lose it, although you lose fitness. Yeah, it's nice to get back out but yeah like you said, I'm blown but yeah it's nice to get my legs back going again, hopefully be alright for pre-season.
"It's obviously nice to have a bit of time back at home but I think with the season I've had I'd rather be in and get fit and it's been a really tough year.Β
"I've learnt a lot about myself and I've learnt a lot about my body. Over the past 8, 9 10 months, whatever it's been sometimes I've probably pushed myself a little bit too hard when i probably should've taken a step back. So this time we'll do things when I'm ready and confident to do the next step." he added.
"We've seen the best people possible and had one of the best surgeries around, so I'm confident its worked and through the exercise that i used to get pain on, I'm not getting the pain any more.
"Obviously i wouldn't know till i start striking a ball which will probably be in the next couple of weeks."
It is unclear if Roberts will feature in any of the pre-season fixtures, as Notts County Head Coach Ian Burchnall might choose to ease him into action within the league campaign.

Notts County defender Adam Chicksen has agreed a new contract believed to be a-year-deal.
Chicksen found himself as part of Ian Burchnall's three-man defence, where he earned praise from the magpie fans' for his display leading into the play-offs and against Chesterfield.
The 29-year-old has put pen to paper after his previous deal expired and it is thought that the defender will be part of the head coaches plans leading into the 2021/2022 National League season.
Via the official site, Ian Burchnall said "Adam played a huge role in our strong run into the play-offs and brings invaluable versatility to the squad, As we’ve seen, he’s comfortable in the left of a back three.
"He can also play as a full back and wing back. He has the footballing intelligence to adapt to different systems."
Chicksen's extension will see him fall alongside Kyle Cameron who joined earlier last week from Torquay United, Connell Rawlinson and Alex Lacey - who will all contend for the 3 defensive spaces in Ian Burchnall's team.
Adam Chicksen said about his new deal at Meadow Lane: "I'm delighted, probably my smile tells a lot.Β
"Yeah obviously the back end of the season was so enjoyable, it was so easy for me to want to stay and really happy that the club wanted me to stay and that my performances are merited a contract." he addedΒ
"Really happy that it paid off and really happy to get it done and to get my head down and start putting in more performances.
"Probably more belief in myself and more standards for myself"
Before going on to say: "Just having everything put on myself and asking questions of myself, it all fell on myself,Β
"I put it all to falling back on my shoulders, my standards of what i needed to do to get everyone else out of the equation. I started asking myself am i giving everything daily, in training, in games and once i started doing that it seemed to come round full circle."

After a long season, and crashing out of the play-offs in dramatic style, the magpies now look to rebuild for the upcoming 2021/22 Season.Β
It was made official by Notts County earlier this week that they would keep popular midfielder Michael Doyle.Β
However, he would now be the head coach to assist Ian Burchnall for the important season ahead.Β
The Irishman, who is also registered as a player, landed the role at the back end of last season after the dismissal of Maurice Ross.Β
He finds himself in a positive place to take Notts County forward alongside Burchnall.Β
The Magpies then confirmed a new two-year deal for shot-stopper Sam Slocombe.Β
This is really good news for Notts as their number 1 had offers coming from higher up the footballing pyramid, with strong sources linking him to former assistant manager Neil Cox's strong Scunthorpe side.Β
The shot-stopper faced 120 shots last year in the National League, saving 85 of them and with a kicking accuracy of 90 percent.Β
You can tell he will be a massive backbone for the Magpies as they push for promotion back into the Football League.
Sam Slocombe is well known for his honesty towards Notts County.Β
In his interview, after the news was broken towards the chuffed Notts fans, he said β€œWhen I came to Notts County, the project was to get us back to the Football League.Β
"This hasn’t happened yet so I’m grateful to the fans and to the owner, alongside the management team, for letting me carry on this project.”
These comments were music to the Notts fans' ears as many thought he had played his final game in a black and white shirt. Β
And then came another huge boost as fan favourite and hugely important Connell Rawlinson also put pen to paper on a new two-year deal for the Magpies.Β
A real warrior who puts his head in front of anything that comes his way, Rawlinson extended his stay at Meadow Lane as he wants to take the mighty Magpies back to League Two.Β
β€œTo play for Notts County, for what will hopefully be four years of my career, will be an honour for me," he said.
Rawlinson, who is well known for wearing his heart on his sleeve, plays on the right in a three at the back under Ian Burchnall.Β
The Notts boss has revealed that Rawlinson will more than likely play in the centre of a back three and be part of the spine of the team.

Jake Reeves has agreed a deal to join League Two Stevenage.
The 28-year-old midfielder,Β has featured heavily for Notts County in National League andΒ has made more than 200 English Football League appearances
He made 43 appearances last season as the Magpies reached the National League play-offs, however, Reeves has activated a clause in his contract which sees him link up Alex Revell.
Jake Reeves said via the Stevenage official site: "Having just played a year in the National League, it is nice to be back in the Football League with Stevenage.
"I am looking forward to playing at The Lamex as a home player, because playing here away from home was always a tough gig. I know this ground quite well I have met with the gaffer a couple of times now, and ever since talking to him and learning how he wants to play and what he wants to achieve, it was a no-brainer for me".
This leaves Notts County requiring to further strengthen up their midfield, after Michael Doyle has taken the assistant head coach role on a permanent basis and is expected to only feature sporadically for the magpies next season.
Notts County Head coach told the Nottingham Post: "While we are of course very disappointed to be losing Jake, no one deserves this opportunity more than him.
"He had a very difficult time at Bradford after joining them when they were flying high in League One and has given his absolute all for Notts County over the course of this season. We always suspected Jake would have ambitions of returning to the EFL as soon as possible, and we have been planning for this eventuality for some time.
adding "While he will of course be difficult to replace, we have been assessing several players who we feel could step into his shoes and have identified a number of exciting prospects. These things take time, but we’re confident we’ll go into next season with a balanced and strong midfield."

Notts County head coach Ian Burchnall has urgedΒ his side to refocus for upcoming game against TorquayΒ in the magpies'Β bid to regain their place in the English Football League.
The Magpies take a trip to Torquay on Saturday in the 2nd stage of the National League play-offs.
It follows a dramatic late 3-2 sway over Chesterfield at Meadow Lane.
Speaking to BBC Radio Nottingham, Burchnall said: "They are a very good team, they nearly won the league, but finished second - they ran it really close
"We know they've got a lot of quality. We really have to focus now, we have to bring ourselves down and refocus on the next game."
The magpies' are now one game awayΒ from another trip to the National League Playoff finals at Ashton GateΒ after Mark Ellis racked up a last-minute goal to provide victory over Chesterfield in aΒ game which saw them three times score after going behind twice in the match.
The defenderΒ has scored six goals in 20 games since arriving at Meadow Lane from Tranmere Rovers in March.
"He's got a massive head." Burchnall joked before adding: "He's brave, he puts his head on everything. He doesn't mind getting his face smashed in. He's been magnificent."
Ellis was bornΒ in Devon and also made greater than 130 appearances for Torquay earlier in his profession.
"They're a former club, but there's only one thing on my mind and that's to go there and win and get us to the final," the 32-year-old said.
Burchnall believes the character revealed by his group of players since arrivingΒ as manager, 12 days after Ellis' arrival at the club has been vital.
"We have it in the group. I saw it when I first came in.
"We just needed to believe in what we were doing a little bit more, we just needed to believe in what we were doing a little bit more, We turned a corner a while back and they've not looked back since then."
