Several news organisations rightly picked up on this: Tory peers have been trying to filibuster the Football Governance Bill in the Lords. This is a manifesto commitment - and has cross-party backing. So they...

Tory peers looking after Premier League clubs then ????

I don't think it's wise to make this a party political issue.

There are concerns that the Bill doesn't go far enough. For instance women's football hasn't been included, & it needs to be.

I think the Bill is so important that it does need more scrutiny in the committee stage, before it goes to third reading. More info here.

One can see from the above posting, why the Premier League is against it. A Football Regulator is needed to pull back the Premier League from running the game by economic power

I agree that we need a football regulator. I read that the bill doesn't give the regulator power over parachute payments & as I've said previously, women's football needs to be regulated too

Womens football is going the way of the mens game where the women's top league is pulling away from the rest & most of the money is concentrated there.

The big six in the women's is becoming the big six in the men's.

Hopefully at committee stage it will be made into a comprehensive bill to allow the Regulator the power to override decisions by the FA if those decisions go against the interests of all league clubs.

One of the first decisions I would like to see is FA Cup replays being reinstated, & parachute payments heavily regulated.

Parachute payments are a difficult issue. Promoted clubs, in order to remain competitive in a higher league, need to offer say 2 year contracts minimum. If they get relegated after the first season, the financial legacy of funding those 2nd year contracts may become problematic

In this day and age, contracts have clauses which lower a player's salary in the case of relegation and other aspects, such as agreements upon a release clause for a set transfer fee is a bit of a double-sided coin.

I am all for football to have a regulator, but it needs to be completely independent.

The Premier League, along with clubs who experience a yo-yo like existence - bouncing from division to the other will not want to see their finances being limited in any sort of way. The parachute payments will be difficult to remove from the game, although most of the time it seems clubs use the money to sign players to improve their squad - rather than it being to protect wages etc.
