Meet the Fans: Notts County 2-2 Accrington Stanley, Friday 25 August 2017
A topsy-turvy August on the pitch for Notts County has ended on a somewhat sour note as the Magpies were held to a 2-2 draw by Accrington Stanley on Friday night. In the first League Two fixture of the bank holiday weekend, rescheduled due to a clash with the neighbours over the Trent, the Magpies edged into a 1-0 half time lead at Meadow Lane lead thanks to Jon Stead's penalty. Things got even better for Kevin Nolan's charges as they doubled their lead in the 54th minute through Jorge Grant, but for the second consecutive game, this was to be wasted. First, Mark Hughes looped home a volley, then in injury time, after a player from each side had been sent off, Mallik Wilks struck the equaliser. Notts were unable to conjure up another fightback like at Wycombe Wanderers, and in fact were lucky not to concede a killer third in the dying stages of the game. Pride of Nottingham was at the Lane for the game, and interviewed a number of home fans prior to kickoff, asking them about the Notts team spirit, their favourite goal so far this season, and more. Tactical Talk: Notts County 2-2 Accrington Stanley, Friday 25 August 2017
A rollercoaster August on the pitch for Notts County has ended on a somewhat sour note as the Magpies were held to a 2-2 draw by Accrington Stanley. In Friday night's League Two fixture at Meadow Lane, rescheduled due to a fixture clash with the neighbours over the Trent, the Magpies edged into a 1-0 half time lead thanks to Jon Stead's penalty. Here is Pride of Nottingham's review and analysis of the match. Was the result fair? It’s harder this week, as on one hand Notts didn’t deserve to lose their 2-0 goal lead but on the other we didn’t finish our chances which ultimately lead to Accrington coming back into it. Putting aside tactics, changes, and the woeful decisions by the officials, I actually feel the final score doesn’t reflect well on the game at all. How did Notts play? First half we passed the ball around well, defended efficiently but that same old problem of rushing when in the final third appeared. Until the Jon Stead penalty, I honestly couldn’t see Notts scoring and that decision lifted the confidence of the players. My gripes against Accrington is that we simply weren’t fluid enough when it came to truly finishing the game off – yet several players did perform well and as a team we did okay. How did Accrington Stanley play? They passed the ball well, made good movements and actually looked sharper when they focused on playing football (not pulling shirts or diving) – yet they didn’t defend very well and heavily relied upon their goalkeeper. When it came to scoring opportunities they didn’t really threaten as much as I felt they should have, I’d describe them as the typical ‘League Two’ team. Did our tactics work out? In a way, yes, the tactics set out by Kevin Nolan worked. It allowed Notts to play with a level of confidence but there were visible signs that needed adjusting at half time – whilst the substitutions actually balanced the game in Accrington Stanley’s favour. Reverting to one up front in the second half really had a negative impact on the game. How did the referee perform? Possibly one of the worst referees I will see this season, he gave fouls for literally nothing – most of the time he seemed to favour Accrington. Whilst they as an opposition side focused on shirt pulling, physically restraining players and pushing – very few of these decisions were noticed. I feel the penalty decision was quite soft, and a call which he felt probably would balance up his poor decisions – yet he was card/whistle happy and I just wanted to see him assert his authority a lot more without being daft. Who do we play next? Port Vale – a team which will give us more of a football match, and Notts will need to show their determination towards achieving a respectable league finish by ensuring we leave with a good result. How should we play them? It’s obvious to suggest, yet I have been calling for it for a while now – start Jonathan Forte in place of Jon Stead. Also, bring back Lewis Alessandra, allow Jorge Grant to play a more direct role just behind the forwards when in procession and allow someone like Rob Milsom to be the forward thinker in midfield. Without completely changing the balance, there’s not a lot Kevin Nolan can do but I feel this would give us favour over Vale and how they may possible set themselves up. Defensively we need to be accountable, only commit when there’s a good chance of winning the ball – so Richard Duffy go back and access your defending against Coventry City and Stanley. Stanley fans view (courtesy of Accringtonweb): Phil Whalley: Terrific spirit from the Stanley boys, Wilkes a superb finish after a Sykes nod on for an unlikely point. Once it went 10 vs 10 we were all over them. Chappers MOM by a country mile, let's get behind this lad, he needs to keep building his confidence. McLeod terribly unlucky to be sent off, he was rightly fuming. A really good point against one of the better Notts teams of recent years. Alvin the Chipmunk: Best goalkeeping performance by any Accy stopper in many a year. Not a vintage performance but sheer bloody mindedness salvaged a point. Lord Stiffupperlip: Another stonewall penalty denied, which could have won us the game. But how & why were they given theirs? Must be the softest penalty award ever! Monkey Hanger: Still a penalty as one of our lads charged into the back of one of theirs in the box. Soft maybe but did Kayden go down too easy with the push. Penalty for me anyway as contact was there. just going off the highlights which was not the ref's view. Joe Jones: Notts County should show intent in future transfer windows by waving chequebook
I'd agree with the above, I think there's players at the club which shouldn't have been signed because they stand no chance of becoming first team candidates. We already see that certain players can't replace others, even when they score or do well. Dickinson has played well when given a chance but so far hasn't been given a chance in the league, whilst Forte remains a bench player since doing well. We should sign first team players and build youngsters to fit in around them.

Match Discussion: Game 4 - Stanley (H)
We should have finished the game when we had those 3-4 corners in a row, and bombarded Stanley's area with crosses (which I don't understand why we heavily focus on this). I mean, Yates, Ameobi and someone else had key moments where they could have made it 3-0 but we just knocked it out wide. I don't really understand why we do this when there's space in front or a chance to get a shot on goal.

Match highlights: Notts County 2-2 Accrington Stanley, Friday 25 August 2017
Very soft goals to give, re-watching I must say that I am annoyed by the referee more so now. Yet for Accrington's second goal what the hell is Duffy doing? If he's trying to win a foul he needs a stern word because that is very dodgy play by him.

Match Discussion: Game 4 - Stanley (H)
Yesterday I attended the game by myself, and for the most part I actually felt entertained. We started the game quite brightly - with some very good passing moves created but unfortunately Accrington didn't want us to play on the floor. It's the same old first half up front, we get into good positions and for some reason things don't plan out well. Defensively we looked quite solid, and the penalty gave us a lot of confidence which allowed the ball to return to the floor. Yes, we did hoof it but we did also play on the ground when it was required and this gave players like Hawkridge a lot of opportunity. I didn't see our second goal, yet it seemed to go down hill quickly after from a defensive mindset. We created a large spell whereby we should have gone 3-0 up easily, yet just couldn't finish the chances. There was a time when Yates received the ball, yet knocked it out-wide when the best option was to actually take an attempt on goal. Sorry to write this but Duffy is no captain at all. He was in no-mans land and drifting too far up at periods whereby we needed to be structured at the back - yet it's easy enough for people to blame Collin and Brisley. Accrington threatened 2-3 times before they first scored, and we just resort to taking off a striker? I'm not overly downhearted or disappointed. Yet the warning signs was there (even in the first half). Stanley came for a draw, they resorted to time wasting and doing pretty much anything to add minutes on at the end (I'm not referring to the lengthy injury). Why? They could see we was tiring and being fazed out of the game.

ARLukomski's Match Vlog: Notts County vs. Accrington Stanley, Friday 25 August 2017
At half time I thought we was well in control, yes the game wasn't perfect but we had Accrington Stanley in our pockets. They had to resort to diving and heavily pulling on shirts to try and get things from the game - after our second goal we should have killed the game off but failed to do that. Stead really needs some sort of inspiration to warrant starting, Forte looked much better for the minutes he played. Think we do need another striker, though the issue with Stead/Ameobi is that Nolan constantly plays them without resting either really. I'd have taken Stead off at half time.

Match Discussion: Game 4 - Stanley (H)
Tonight's one of those games where past encounters go totally out of the window, it's all about who shows the most determination to win - I think it will be a close game personally but I do believe Notts will edge the final outcome. There's a lot of teams chasing for a play-off place, so this will make the game interesting as we are both sides that would ultimately want to seek out such position. Yet it's still early days and we are feeling out our opposition, as will other teams and I just hope that we take the pressure off ourselves by retaining the ball. Accrington Stanley will want us to do a lot of the running around, whilst they absorb the play and wait for us to make a mistake.

Kevin Nolan expecting tough game as Notts County host Accrington Stanley
Stanley are a decent League Two outfit these days, they can also play some good football and aren't aside easily pushed off the ball. Tonight should be a great game between two teams chasing a play-off place come the end of the season, fingers crossed we can warrant and deserve the win. COYP!

Notts County boss Kevin Nolan slams idea of "passing for passing's sake"
But you have to pass to retain the ball? Fundamentally this is one of the most basic aspects of football. If you don't pass, you won't score and if you can't retain the ball - well you'll be in trouble because it sums up how Notts prior to Kevin Nolan coming in. So he doesn't want the players to pass for the sake of it? I suppose he means he doesn't want to waste possession.

Samwatto2008: Notts County’s early transfer window review
The squads hard working, the early signs of flaws is also being focused on - after Coventry I have to praise the players for bouncing back and for committing themselves to what Kevin Nolan is trying to do. It's very promising, yet more hard work and determination is required. Brilliant read @samwatto2008.

Match Discussion: Game 4 - Stanley (H)
You can't say that @CliftonMagpie!! This good feel factor needs to continue, so a draw is the bare minimum. We just need to see another decent performance because things right now on looking quite good, bar the odd thing which can easily be fixed - I actually feel very confident going into games. I did after Coventry (they're a decent side at this level).

Match Discussion: Game 4 - Stanley (H)
We need to avoid changes after the Wycombe win, I think the only consideration may be down to tactical reasons. I can't see Fitzsimons starting, Hewitt should probably be replaced and Stead should start on the bench for me. He hasn't impacted any games to my knowledge and has been very disappointing. We can't keep starting Stead and Ameobi either, it isn't quite working - so give someone else a chance to prove their worth. Stead usually becomes fired up from not starting and if we can get him to replicate his form of last season (before his injury) he would be worth starting. Accrington will want to slow in their building, so we should get more time on the ball. Allow Grant and possibly Milsom/Yates to do the running and creativity. We should be good, I'll predict a 2-0 win.
