Notts County have claimed their first win in six League Two games as fellow playoff chasers Coventry City were beaten 2-1 in Saturday's game at Meadow Lane.
The match began slowly, with little of note happening in the opening 20 minutes, before Notts would muster the first chance of the game as Jorge Grant rifled wide from 12 yards out.
Coventry countered with Rod McDonald blasting over, while Tom Bayliss saw an effort deflected wide and McDonald then sent another shot off target.
Marc McNulty and Max Biamou also had sniffs of goal, while at the other end, Jonathan Forte - proudly sponsored by Pride of Nottingham - failed to test Coventry keeper Lee Burge with a run towards goal and subsequent tame effort.
The restart saw Forte test the opposition stopper once again with a powerfully struck effort, while a flashpoint occurred not long after when a coming together between Liam Noble and Coventry's Michael Doyle prompted handbags from both sets of players.
Notts went on to take the lead on the hour as Grant's corner was met by Forte on the leap and headed into the far corner of the Sky Blues net.
Grant thundered a half-volley against the post moments after the restart byt Coventry managed to restore parity with five minutes on the clock when Jordan Ponticelli backheeled the ball past Adam Collin.
However, the final say would belong to Kevin Nolan and co as Forte converted Shola Ameobi's low cross to secure all three points for the hosts, whose promotion hopes were given a huge boost.
