Fifa Rules Out Summer World Cup In Qatar

Featured Replies

FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke has confirmed that the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will not be held in June or July.

He suggested it may be held "between November 15 and January 15 at the latest" according to Sky Sports News.

What do you guys make of this development?

Personally I believe FIFA well and truly shot themselves in the foot. The World Cup has ALWAYS been held in the summer. They blindly went for the Gulf state several years ago without even considering the basic consequences of having a tournament in a country which reaches 50C in June (why did they even need to confirm the venue for 2022 at the same time as the 2018 one?), and now they're paying the price. What an absolute farce.

I felt at the time the decide for Qatar to host the World Cup was somewhat doggy, It seems they knew for sure they would be hosting the cup. There needs to be good planning regardless, I don't mind where it held but the country needs to be safe and I don't believe that Qatar is a wise to host it. Russia for example would be another hostile place for certain players and nations - Qatar are doing everything to use this opportunity to boost their economy and I personally feel it should be football related issues solely, not a way for a Country to profit but of course they do.

Also, I don't think it should interfere with any leagues or players breaks.

It's just odd how much freedom Qatar have been given, I thought that FIFA was really awkward about changing times/locations and so on to make it fair? Oh well

A field where dreams become reality.

Frankly bizarre decision to hold the WC in Qatar, the only reason it makes any kind of sense is when you factor in the huge profits for already rich Qataris and FIFA. The message is clear: f*** everyone else: players, fans, clubs, national squads etc. and not least, the traditional labour force used for all major construction in the middle east (Arab, Asian and African (semi) slaves). Blatter, and all of FIFA really, are basically saying that their profit is more important than basic (and I mean BASIC) human rights of everyone except the few who will make millions out of it. It makes my blood boil.

It's funny how they had one event in 2010 to pick TWO World Cup countries. Methinks that somebody potentially did not want to let Qatar slip... imagine the £O$$ to football...
