Where are they now : Will Patching

Featured Replies

I would overlook trying to sign Will Patching for Notts, I think he will be looking for a League One team.

His time at Derry has allowed him to transform his career, as prior to that stint his direction within football wasn't looking good. He's a decent player, a bit lightweight when we had him, but I thought he had some promise. I find myself favouring him over the likes of Ed Francis. Patching always seems like a sensible player who would flourish within the right squad. So, I did feel a bit disappointed when he left. Whereas, Francis I thought it made sense that we didn't renew terms with him.

Northampton Town could be a good move for Patching, but English football is different compared to the League of Ireland.ย

I have a nagging feeling that Crowley seemingly wants to leave in January... OK transfer fee receivable but the trick then is to find a like for like replacement, even an EU sourced player maybe?ย  Do you think Patching is now good enough to fill the Dan Crowley role as a CAM?

I hope you are wrong, as Will Patching for me isn't good enough to replace Dan Crowley.

They are vastly different players in my eyes, Patching being more of a midfielder who pulls the strings with his passing. He might have developed more having played for Derry, but I don't think he would be the right type of replacement in this theory.

Patching would be a good signing for Carlisle, but I can't imagine him wanting to stick around with them because I can't see them doing much this year and I think improvements will only be seen within 2โ€“3 seasons. I think they are destined to be a team who finish nowhere near a team fighting for playoffs. Unless they strengthen their squad massively, which could be done before, especially at the end of this season.

Personally, I don't think Dan Crowley wants out of Notts. I believe the niggles with the injuries mentioned, and I think he's committed to Notts. I also don't see the sense in jumping to a League One club when we have every chance of getting promotion if we could get the right mentality/effort across the board.

Would he want to come back? Heโ€™ll have experienced being part of our relegation squad that was a total mess and given he never played I canโ€™t imagine he enjoyed his time here. I know we are under a completely different regime now but sometimes these memories can put you off.

I hope the lad is doing well. A season in the National League with Carlisle United could really help his career. Will Patching could play a big role in their push to return to the Football League. If they struggle at the first attempt, he might attract interest and move on.

A good spell at a club that needs a player of his potential would bring out the best in him.

@Piethagoram @Robbie, i think will really needs to fight more to stay settled. if carlisle dont want him, i think it will be a failed move and he needs to find somewhere more permanent to prove himself. i thought he would have done well for them in the national league.

@liampie

I agree. I sometimes do wonder about these loan moves. Is it to given the player more experience or is it just to make some money from the player re, loan fees?

Will has plenty of experience. He's 26 years old. Why can't teams give players an opportunity?

I'm sure the Northern Irish Premier league is of a higher standard than the NL.

I could see the potential, but I never rated him at Notts. He never really stood out, and I always thought he needed to build up his strength or add some muscle.

Maybe Carlisle donโ€™t see him as the right fit for the National League, or perhaps Will doesnโ€™t want to go back. If they had stayed in League Two, I think he would still be part of their squad.

@Robbie, probably both club and player deciding that the national league is not for him and carlisle might be hoping to return to the efl at their first try. i think will really does need to settle, but if he signed for an irish team. i think he will find it harder to claim up the english leagues. hes at the age where he needs to be a clubs main midfielder, but he is not. i do think hes a good player.
