Welsh League Cup

A new completion has been proposed called the Welsh League Cup.

Four Welsh sides, Wrexham , Swansea, Cardiff & Newport who play in the English League would be joined by 12 Welsh Clubs that play in the Welsh Premier League.

The winner of the competition would qualify for European competition.Β The FAW says the competition winner will go into the qualifying rounds of a UEFA club competition.

Is this just another way to try to make money once again?Β

There's zero chance any of the teams in the Welsh League win it so it's pointless for them. It would only benefit those 4 teams playing in England and that doesn't seem fair to me. Why do all of a sudden these 4 teams get a chance to play in Europe? If they want to play in Europe than they can do it like everyone else by either; winning a domestic cup or finishing between 1st-7th/8th in the Premier League. Equally, I guess they could always switch leagues and win the JD Sports Cymru Premier 😈

Isn't this just a revival of the old Welsh Cup? The likes of Cardiff and Wrexham used to play in the Cup Winners' Cup all the time, and this sounds very similar. I don't really see why not - if the FAW has an extra European spot, it's up to them how they use it

"Money was a more significant consideration. With tight regulations over profit and sustainability rules, it was argued Wales' clubs – with their greater chance of reaching Europe – would have an unfair advantage."

it sounds silly, cardiff and swansea would dominate it until wrexham grew bigger. all the welsh league teams would struggle, so i dont understand why they would want this because they would risk potential income from the games the bigger teams are more likely to win.

It is sad the Welsh Prem is so weak. I occasionally flick through the channels and end up watching some highlights on SC4, you wouldn't know it's the top tier at times as a lot of the facilities are reminiscent of Sunday league football. No idea how you improve the standard,Β and it won't ever happen but imagine if you did stick Cardiff and Swansea in the Welsh Premiership, it would mirror the Scottish Premiership with Celtic and Rangers. They would just dominate it for eternity.Β

The Welsh League Cup, with teams from outside the Welsh Leagues but are Welsh playing in England. I don't get the point of the competition. It would put them at risk of losing to teams with EFL funding, which does not compare to the money the Welsh league brings in. If a competition has a disadvantage like this, it doesn't make sense.
