Vanilla ice cream

Featured Replies

Some people think vanilla means “plain”, but that’s not true. It’s not a boring taste at all. If you try a proper Cornish brand and it’s made well, it can really surprise you. I do think vanilla has been given a reputation as cheap and dull, but when it’s done right, it’s still one of my favourite flavours. I can’t say no to a good choc ice, vanilla and chocolate is a classic combo.

Kelly’s is a good brand, but I feel like it’s changed over time. It’s more creamy and milky now. Cornish ice cream still has that rich taste, but it’s not quite how it was ten or fifteen years ago.

I always choose vanilla it’s my favourite flavoured ice cream. I prefer the ice cream scooped out of tubs rather than the Mr. Whippy style.

My childhood memories on the Clifton estate was eating Midland Counties ice cream

We had a small vanilla ice cream block in wafers which were sold separately

Certainly the quality of vanilla ice creams seems to have declined over the years. The real Cornish clotted cream flavour seems to have been lost along the way in the last 10/ 15 years

Vanilla ice cream can be a bit hit and miss. A lot of it ends up tasting like cold milk, which isn’t how proper vanilla should taste when the pods are used the right way. Good vanilla has a lovely smell, and when it’s used in baking, it can taste amazing. It lifts the flavour and makes things feel richer.

Strawberry’s my favourite when it comes to ice cream. I do enjoy vanilla too, but it’s probably my third or fourth pick overall.
