The opening of GEM in West Bridgford

Featured Replies

Wow. Is it almost 60 years ago? I remember going to GEM with my parents. The store seemed to go on for ever and ever. It was revolutionary for its time.

This is Asda now, right?

I have never heard of this supermarket, but the building looks similar to what I recognise as being Asda. Just with some moderisation. How big of a supermarket chain was GEM?

The supermarket chain "GEM" no longer exists as an independent entity; its British operations were acquired by Asda in the mid-1960s, and its U.S. and Canadian operations ceased in the late 1970s and 1980s. Asda now occupies the sites of GEMs UK Supermarkets.
