Well, I thought it was to allow the ref to communicate with the fourth official. I can't recall seeing assistance having them (in calls me to refer to them as anything more than linesman) but I think face to face in some cases is the right thing.

Yet very few above League One seem to communicate via their hand free devices.

Little did we know, most are running around listening to music! LOL

I thought I'd replied to this but it's disappeared into the ether, perhaps I didn't click submit.


 


Anyway, I thought it was more for if the ref missed the linesman flagging, so that the linesman could shout down his microphone 'OY, ARE YOU BLIND REF, THAT WAS OFFSIDE"
