Was just casually looking through Amazon when I decided to see what search results Notts County would bring. And I found this book:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ultra-Violence-Mark-Anthony-Barry/dp/1478139595/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1363539056&sr=8-1

This is the synopsis:

Forty. Receding pate. Failing marriage. Delinquent, uncaring son. Psycho boss parachuted in to cut the big earners. A few lost marbles? It wasn?t always like this. He used to be a face. A player. A terrace celebrity. Now hes just another faceless nobody on the brink of despair in a world he no longer recognises. One freezing winter?s day, a chance meeting with a face from the old days at Notts County changes everything. Especially when there?s an intriguing proposition on the table. One he may find difficult to refuse. Ultra Violence is the thrilling, humourous, nihilistic and sometimes moving story, told partially in flashback, of one mans journey from idealistic young fan to major football hooligan set against the shadow of a grim and soulless middle age in the bustling English city of Nottingham.

Has anyone heard of Mark Barry or this book before? It's had quite good reviews.

New to me :)

Let me know if you read or buy it, I don't think it's for me but sounds interesting. The name also doesn't mean anything to me either :/

ive bought it on e-book and am reading it now. so far it's pretty decent, every chapter it alternates between his current life (losing his job, apathetic wife, moody child, then he meets up with one of his old firm mates) and his past experiences which shaped him.

This sort of Hi-Jacks the thread and sends it a little off the rails but, at least I think, Joe wouldn't mind. I've read a few Notts County books, I have a fair amount from when my grandfather was alive, (he also buy me a book if he noticed a new one)

Highly rate this

In the summer of 2009 Notts County Football Club were set to embark on one of the most remarkable season's ever witnessed by a League Two club. For the fans, their tale would be even more amazing.

Writer Luke Williamson decided to document the season that was to become one of the most dramatic campaigns ever in the clubs rich long history. Following the up's and down's, the arrival of star signings, the managerial changes and board room takeovers, Williamson penned his account through the eyes of a fan.

Football is more than merely statistics, points and league positions. It is about the drama, the nerves, the passion and the emotion. The expectancy of a home crowd and the togetherness of an away following.

I Had A Wheelbarrow attempts to explain all of that emotion as Williamson followed his beloved Magpies around League Two as the club he grew up with attempted to ensure this memorable season ended in success.
