Fan at game given suspended ban after TV viewer complaint

A football supporter has been handed a suspended stadium ban by their club after a TV viewer contacted them to complain about the individual making a ‘masturbatory gesture’ towards the opposition.

Sorry but... what the s**t?! What a joke.

It's a bit weird, I thought punishment had to involve someone in attendance, as it was aimed at a player - I'm unsure how anyone could complain. People just have to be smarter these days I guess, but then again certain things are expected at football.

I don't get offended by swearing or these types of gestures, seen plenty during live games too.

 It's just all rather odd.

Excellent news. About time people were held responsible for their actions.

Bad news if true.  I've seen hundreds of people making a similar gesture over the years, so where do you draw the line?  Is it any worse than swearing at a match?  Football is an emotive game, take away the passion and we will soon be playing in front of a few dozen.  Sometimes things happen at games that are unacceptable, but for me this doesn't even come close to crossing the line.

I have to add it's down to the stewards and fans at games to police what happens, and if they have any concerns. Not someone watching over a TV monitor who might not be aware of the full situation, I mean what if a fan was doing it in retaliation?

We can't really assume as this isn't right and this type of behaviour is very common.

People should learn to ignore minor things, and stand up to the right type of issues. Racism, abuse (threats etc) all of which I am sure people ignore on a daily basis via their screens.

Why should doing it in retaliation make any difference?

If you look at it in the cold light of day, it shouldn't make any difference at all.  But if you went to a game and simply viewed the 90 minutes in the cold light of day you would be a pretty strange creature!  Football is all about passion, which makes some us act in ways we wouldn't normally act.  I frequently spend 90 minutes berating the officials, but by the time I've driven home I realise the reason we didn't win was because we weren't good enough rather than their decisions.  It's a question of where you draw the line, and while I don't remember doing any hand gestures, I've probably aimed the verbal equivalent at away fans!
