Mo Salah and mental weakness

I know this isn’t going to be popular in some quarters but…

Mo Salah is a tremendously gifted footballer, a talismanic figure for his club this season. He, more than anyone, was representing hopes of the fans that had travelled, and yet…

He suffered a suspected dislocated shoulder, and maybe some ligament damage in the shoulder. For goodness sake, this was a final, the biggest game he has played in, maybe ever will play in. If it’s a mid-season league game, you come off, if you’re a bog-standard right-back, you come off.

If you’re player who has scored a third of his club’s goals this season – you don’t come off. If you’re the only player on your team with the wit, vision and ability to cause the opposition any worries, you don’t come off with a suspected dislocated shoulder. You play on. It was a Final.

I’ve seen amateur goalkeepers play with broken hands, amateur RL players keep going after 3 shoulder dislocations in the same game. I’m sorry, but to go off as Salah did shows immense mental weakness. I don’t doubt it hurt, but he’s an Association Footballer. It wasn’t a leg injury (ACL, Achilles etc.) preventing him from running. I was there when Terry Darracott played on at Old Trafford with a broken leg, Stuart Pearce has done the same, but I didn’t see it live.

Let’s think of similar circumstances – talismanic players in a final or an international.

Bernd Trautmann – broken neck in FA CUP final – played on.

Franz Beckenbauer – broken arm in World Cup Semi-Final – played on.

Vincent Kompany - broken nose, a cracked eye socket- played on for his country.

Sam Burgess – broken cheekbone and cracked eye socket in first minute – played on in Grand Final.

Paul Wood – ******** torn off in a tackle - played on in Grand Final.

Bobby Baun (Toronto Maple Leafs) – broken leg – played on in a Stanley Cup Final.

Colin Cowdrey – broken arm – faced West Indian fast bowlers at Lord’s.

Alan Prescott – broken arm – played on against Australia in test match.

We remember these players and their feats of courage.

I hope Salah recovers rapidly, he’s a lovely player to watch, but he will not fulfil his potential without the mental strength to match his talent. LFC fans, ask yourselves this…

Would Tommy Smith have gone off with a suspected dislocated shoulder in a final? Would Souness? Would Billy Liddell? Would Klopp himself?

No judgement from me, it's his decision as he knows his own body.

Interesting point, but not sure I agree. People remember the players you listed because they were unusual - they were the exception that proved the rule. And dislocated shoulders are painful!

Yeah, I've experienced the pain but the worst is your knee (especially after, any weight kills whereas a shoulder can rest if not used).

I don't think it's negative that Salah went off, these days your supposed to do so on health grounds. If Mo had injured himself worse, there's various complications which could have occurred.

its a bit harsh to say hes being weak, dislocating your shoulder is more physical than mental. the pain probably fault unbearable and if real targeted him further it could have been worse.

was it that dirty ramos who fouled him?
