so the one million pound transfer seems so along now but in comparison to current transfer fees that’s a Small with Neymar costing over a hundred million would you say that transfer fees have got out of hand.?

They've been out of hand for years, however now they're getting silly and you mentioned in another topic is it about the name on the back or the club crest.

Well the fees agreed only goes to peoples head.

It's insane the amount of money paid but it will only increase until players force clubs to put in a fee into their contract in terms of triggering a release. I fear once the release clause moves into the £300m territory it will spoil the game even more and force players to play out their contracts which is what I feel some clubs want.

Bale to Real I think was the start of the transfer fees getting out of hand. Since then there is has been some ridiculous fees payed for players not worth that price. Clubs pay fees for a player which they think will be their value in a few years time.

It’s gotten out of hand to the point where agents are getting over 15 mill in fees which agents are the middle man and never used to earn that. No player is worth the large fee not on one player when in some teams what u pay for one person it’s worth more.

I am sure people in the 50's and 60's felt that some of the early fees paid wasn't worth it.

The game has more money involved to me PSG signed Naymar for more than his footballing ability, which would lift the price up. That's a world we live in now.

@NottsTastic valid point.

There's more reason and although I think some of the fees are senseless, I guess the profit in shirt sales, club PR and media interest would generate enough fees. Maybe the real fault is how the press hype players because I don't think Naymar is that good.

Very silly I agree.

There will be a time when the players considered to be the very best will leave for very ridiculous amount of money.

It's way out of hand now.

When will the first player be sold for a billion pounds? No player is worth more than £30m.

There is a lot of politics in it. PSG are linked with the actual country Qatar and they are hosting the World Cup in 2022. PSG need faces for that World Cup (Neymar, Mbappe) as it is such a political challenge. There is a lot of little bits to that story which I just can't explain but basically that is why they spend the money they do.

It's hard to see players get paid that amount of money when they're still league football clubs folding because of the amount of money that is still needed at our level. It's every footballers dream to play in the Premier League at some point but personally I hate the politics of EPL football (TV, fan engagement is woeful, tourist attraction, fake fans, accommodating TV over normal 3pm kick offs.) It's got to the stage now where I only really care about Championship or below in terms of transfers etc as I just can't get on with the EPL anymore. Too much money.

I remember the shock when Andy Cole joined Manchester United for 7 million in 1995. It was featured on the news then - that wold be regarded as a "cheap" transfer in the top flight today. Likewise when Alan Shearer joined Newcastle for 15 million, maybe two years later? That also appeared on the news. But this discussion has been going on for longer than that - it has been a burning topic ever since football went professional. But I feel there is a new quality to it today:

This is just it. In the 90s, Manchester United and Newcastle spent all that money because they could afford it, because Cole and Shearer were proven goalscorers (and both transfers were hugely successful) and no doubt for merchandising too. But today we have a situation where clubs are backed by the wealth of entire kingdoms with virtually unlimited funds. Simply having a top star is a matter of prestige for them, and money is no object.

silly money will always be in the game, there is no way to cut it out but the wages side is the scary thing.

its us as fans who pay for it, so eventually football will price the working person out of going and the sport would not be the same. maybe if the wages was capped, the fees would be more sensible?

They have been way too high for years now, but its like bidding for something... if someone wants the player more, they will bid higher.

Quite correct @cheeky~k8,a player's transfer fee is only what a a rival team is willing to pay.Teams often  place a ridiculously high price on a player in an attempt to deter opposition teams from luring  a player away.Although the silly asking price  may not be met the final  transfer fee is likely to still be very  much higher than the original bid.A bidding war hikes the price up too.

It is now a days mate my would grandad often would tell me story’s when players played for pride more than money .. but it’s changed mate and there’s no way to stop it ..

I don't think some of these players deserve to go for £5 million let alone £30+ and upwards.

It's crazy but the issue is senseless buying and managers panicking to sign a big name. There's a reason why the players fail or flop due to high fees, the best players make it worthwhile.

Don't get me started.....Ridiculous. Paul stopped going to F word when Cloughie paid a million for Trevor Francis.

The abolishjng of the maximum wage also helped push up transfer fees, as the wealthier clubs who could bid higher could now  offer higher wages too.

It’s bloody stupid.. the players aren’t worth Whst they sell for ????so by doing that it meant the players could demand what they want great news
