Martin Allen's contract has this evening been terminated with immediate effect by Gillingham. They're currently 16th in league one.

Gillingham fans reaction to this news has been identical to that of our fans when he left Notts. Funny how it always seems to be a unanimous board decision. I dont think chairman like his character, and also I think many get a bit touchy when fans become so attached to a manager.

I'm willing to bet it probably wasn't results based.

Kind of sad to see, I'll always have a soft spot for him for the way he came in and revitalised our club.

I don't know.

We'll find out if there's anything more behind it, the way football is it won't take long for it to be voiced. I just find it surprising, seems weird to sack someone who took them up (with very little hope of it). I believe their chairman even said his job would safe at the start of the season, so it's just odd.

As great an achievement as winning the league was, promotion was always their main aim mate, plus he had a pretty big budget to do it with. He assembled a very good squad, and I was somewhat surprised by their start to this season

Allen has a remarkable talent for getting the best out of players, particularly average ones. He has an affinity with fans and knows how to court popularity.

However, he also seems to have difficulty in sustaining success and he also appears to outlive his relationships with owners/Chairmen. There is a flaw there somewhere but, having said that, I warmed to him and liked his style, pity his team selections were increasingly bizarre by the time he left us. Good luck to the bloke, football needs managers who can produce winning teams and excite fans - Allen can do both.

Yes, I've got a soft spot for Martin Allen too, I thought it was great the way he came in and changed things so that the players were more approachable for the fans. The players who weren't playing sat with the fans, players went to youngster birthday parties, they warmed up and came and clapped the fans before the game etc.,

I was looking forward to welcoming him back to Meadow Lane when we played Gillingham, shame he's lost another job and good luck to him for the future.

I sure was - Felt we had a good chance of another 4-0 dubbing, now I'm concerned a new manager may have 'em on a honeymoon period. :P
