Prediction league 20/21 round 46 - 8 May - THE FINAL

Recommended Posts

The excitement was tangible. The ancient civilisation had disappeared thousands of years ago amid a terrible climate catastrophe. All they left behind were ruins. But now the archaeologists crowded around the mysterious metal box. Such boxes had been found before, but this one was unique in that it still functioned, even after the passing of millennia. What message could the ancients have in store? An image flickered on the screen - two black and white birds sitting atop a stripy shield. Perhaps these were the deities worshipped by this long-lost civilisation? And finally, like a hand reaching through the ages, a decipherable message: "the PON prediction league champion for 2020-21 is ..."

Fancy writing yourself into the history of mankind (and PON)? Or just want to make up a position or two before the music stops? Here's your chance! The three Championship fixtures kick off at the earlier time of 12.30pm on Saturday, and the rest at the usual time of 3pm. Oh, and remember your jokers!

Hopefully will see you all for next seasons shenanigans. To these who have secured a ticket for May 22nd although probably pass each other without a second look its likely to be an emotional day for us all. #COYP

The scores:

Blackburn Rovers 5-2 Birmingham City
Derby County 3-3 Sheffield Wednesday
QPR 3-1 Luton Town
Carlisle United 0-0 Walsall
Port Vale 0-3 Mansfield Town
Salford City 3-0 Leyton Orient
Halifax Town 0-1 Boreham Wood
Wrexham 3-0 Yeovil Town

Final day scores can be tricky to predict as some teams are on their holidays already, so there weren't many points this time. But our top scorers were @nottsnutter and @william1984 with 7 - congrats!

@william1984, @nottsnutter - 7
@Dripsey3, @jimbob - 6
@ARLukomski, @super_ram, @Dan - 5
@DangerousSausage, @GrannyPie, @4everapie, @barnet11uk, @magpiejue - 4
@Megan_Elizax - 3

So who took the prize? Massive congratulations to @ARLukomski, who scooped his third successive title, just two points ahead of @Dripsey3! This one went down to the wire. As it happens, the Salford match kicked off late and it all hinged on that result. Had Salford won 2-1, we would have had joint champions, and with the score at 2-0 it looked in the balance. But as soon as Orient got one back, the die was cast. @Megan_Elizax takes third place in her debut season after topping the table for a long stretch, and I pipped @super_ram for the "Champions League" spot (just humour me).

AR Lukomski - 233
Dripsey3 - 231
Megan_Elizax - 226
DangerousSausage - 211
super_ram - 209
william1984 - 193
nottsnutter - 193
Dan - 187
GrannyPie - 186
4everapie - 177
barnet11uk - 162
magpiejue - 150
jimbob - 142
liampie - 130
CliftonMagpie - 89
KB1862 - 84
Chris - 76
allardyces tash - 75
TheSkipper - 44
Alex - 42
Canadian - 26
weymouthPIE - 22

So that's it for another season. Thank you all for playing, it's been an absolute pleasure! It's been a strange season and a strange time, and adding up your points (and attempting to beat you all) has been very therapeutic for me. I hope we can look forward to some normality next season and finally see the inside of a football ground again on a regular basis. And the prediction league will be back too, when next season starts in August!

Thanks @DangerousSausage for organising it all this year. This has been the toughest year for it, as for long spells I didn't believe I would win as I was 3rd for so long. Credit to @Dripsey3 and @Megan_Elizax for playing an awesome game this season as well.

You're very welcome! The round when you got 19 points (out of a possible 27, so really impressive stuff) was when you turned it around, you were drifting out of contention until then. Personally I quite like it when it's tight at the top and top spot changes hands often. That said, next year I plan to win it by at least 50 points :D

I'll be taking a break from the predictions until August, but with Euro 2021 coming up there's also the possibility of holding a prediction game for that, if anyone's up for it. I seem to remember doing one a few years back.
