  1. Oh dear. Ian Holloway has achieved nothing for years. Swindon are circling the drain and are in serious trouble. His Wikipedia page contains an entertaining account of the utter chaos during his most recent job at Grimsby Town, which culminated in their relegation to the National League. He's been unemployed in the three years since they sacked him, publicly stating that he's lost his appetite for football. Not very promising.
  2. There's a bit of an assumption that top managers have had gilded careers. But Mourinho played in the fifth tier of Portuguese football and was a PE teacher before joining Bobby Robson's staff at Sporting Lisbon. All the same, he'll have better options than Carlisle... Plenty of managers from the top flight have ended up falling down the leagues though, mainly due to a lack of success. That orange bloke who took Hull to the Premier League (edit: Phil Brown) is one of them, he's now the manager of Kidderminster. Brian Little managed Aston Villa in the UEFA Cup, but ended up at Gainsborough Trinity. And more recently Mark Hughes, once an established Premier League manager, got the sack from Bradford. And former internationals like Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Sol Campbell and Edgar Davids have got their hands dirty in charge of small clubs with mixed results. Even Harry Kewell ???? So it does happen!
  3. I don't mind the new style and have spotted a few bells and whistles I hadn't before. And most importantly, it seems to work! However, not everything is quite as visible as it should be - certain users' names (particularly the mods) are hard to read because of a lack of contrast.
  4. That's not right, they've filmed in the West Midlands before. An episode featuring Shakespeare was filmed in an old building in Coventry. *Removes anorak*
  5. Notts also played under Sheffield rules in the early days. Sheffield missed out on the Football League because they stayed amateur while other clubs were (illegally) hiring professional players. In the space of about a decade they went from being one of the country's leading clubs to being on the receiving end of regular spankings from Notts and the Lancashire clubs and were in serious decline by the 1880s. As for Dronfield, it's right outside of Sheffield, so not comparable with MK being 80 miles from Wimbledon. They're currently building a permanent home in Sheffield. I think we should arrange a friendly when it's finished. Maybe even in retro kits? With all the international attention they get, I can't help wondering if someone very rich will try to do a Salford with them one day. We'll have to take some signage down if they do!
  6. No, Macca wasn't forced out. The club clearly did everything it could to persuade him to stay, but he got an offer he couldn't refuse. He was evidently happy with us, but he's only got one career. I don't think either of them regrets moving, they both got the chance to make their mark in the Championship a matter of months after being in the National League, and that's a huge step up. Having said that, I think Langstaff would have started more games under Williams at Swansea. Time will tell how the move works out for him, but even if it doesn't there'll be plenty of clubs willing to snap him up in League One.
  7. Tuesday's results: Cardiff City 2-0 Portsmouth Leeds United 2-1 Watford Bristol Rovers 1-0 Shrewsbury Town Peterborough United 5-1 Blackpool Fleetwood Town 0-1 Crewe Alexandra Tranmere Rovers 0-1 Grimsby Town Dagenham & Redbridge 2-2 Eastleigh Tamworth 0-0 Yeovil Town --- I'm not sure we've seen this before - this week we have SEVEN joint winners with ten points each! Well done to @allardyces tash, @DonnyNotts, @Fan of Big Tone, @Megan_Elizax, @Robbie, @super_ram and @upthepies! --- This is our overall table. @super_ram moves eight points clear, while @thommo goes second and @Robbie joins the chasing group! --- There's another round coming up on Saturday, and the fixtures are already online. Go on, have a go! Thanks for playing!
  8. We round off October with the 14th batch of fixtures. These all kick off at 3pm on the Saturday, and don't forget to use your joker! Derby County v Hull City Plymouth Argyle v Preston North End Cambridge United v Burton Albion Lincoln City v Stockport County Bradford City v Doncaster Rovers Newport County v Fleetwood Town Barnet v Rochdale Ebbsfleet United v Wealdstone
  9. To do well in this league you have to be hard to beat. This season we have lost 2 out of 13 and are unbeaten away from home. A solid defence is the foundation you need for that; build on it and you have a promotion contender. We didn't have that foundation last season and eventually it dragged us down the table - we were needing to score 3 or 5 even to draw. This season so far, if we score just once there's a good chance we'll be drawing at least. And having lost Langstaff, Nemane and now Jones, scoring 21 goals (making us the third highest scorers) is more than decent. It wasn't a great game and in the first half we were dreadful, but I'm encouraged by the fact that we hung on and found a way back into it. We deserved the point, but could easily have come away empty-handed as we looked toothless going forward. I hope that improves!
  10. Sounds like wholesome family viewing! Regarding ice cream, I'm lucky that there are lots of Italian ice cream parlours here that make their own ice cream. Good news for me as whippy ice cream gives me a bad stomach. On the other hand, you have sausage rolls and we don't, so it's swings and roundabouts... Today is the day I work in the office and eat at the company canteen. On the menu were pork in onion sauce, a "pumpkin soup" that was orange but somehow tasted exactly the same as the onion sauce, and a bean salad. It almost beat the lentils/beans/cabbage combo I had a few weeks back. I value my marriage so I'll take sandwiches next time
  11. I think that's it in a nutshell. I remember that Guardian columnist who was onto Munto from the start getting dog's abuse as well. His "crime" was to shine a light on the project we'd all invested so much hope in. But a player leaving because he "can't settle"? Happens all the time, shame but cheerio. Football is probably full of characters who think they're bigger than the clubs they're at, especially since many were now coached at academies of major clubs and told they were the next big thing before ending up at Crinkly Bottom Rangers AFC.
  12. All this happened long before I was allowed to drink @Chris, which might indicate how long ago it was! I've had a virtual walk around on Google Maps and I'm fairly certain it was Smith's. The picture on Google is exactly how I remember it and it's down the road from the caravan park. Is it still there?
  13. And here are mine: Cardiff City 2-1 Portsmouth Leeds United 2-1 Watford Bristol Rovers 2-0 Shrewsbury Town (joker) Peterborough United 1-1 Blackpool Fleetwood Town 2-1 Crewe Alexandra Tranmere Rovers 3-1 Grimsby Town Dagenham & Redbridge 1-0 Eastleigh Tamworth 1-1 Yeovil Town
  14. These games kick off on TUESDAY night. Let's be having you! @ARLukomski, @Blake, @Chris, @CliftonMagpie, @DonnyNotts, @Harry Buckley, @JIMBO, @Joshua, @JustLikeJuve, @liampie, @Megan_Elizax, @menzinho, @NottsLoyal, @NottsTastic, @OoooooTommy, @Robbie, @super_ram, @The Heff, @TheSkipper, @thommo, @upthepies
  15. Great to see Bass complete his treble of clean sheets! It must give the back line so much more confidence to know they have a reliable keeper behind them. He's already won us points on his own.
  16. Everyone at the club should give him the time he needs. Some things are more important than football. Notts can bring in another striker to cover (on loan), but Cedwyn only has one life. Hope to see him back soon, enjoying life and enjoying his football!
  17. This is wild. He was paid 2 million a year to sit in the stands looking mardy? I could do it for half that (plus a personal pie budget).
  18. Memory unlocked. I'm walking away from the arcade at Skegness or possibly Winthorpe with my parents and my sister. My sister had been given a big bag of 2p coins, which she had blown on the machines (I may have "helped" her). She won nothing. So the money has gone and we're empty-handed. My dad asks her, "So what's the moral of the story?" Her response? "Need more tuppences!"
  19. Hey, I'd love to share more from my impossibly glamorous life but most of it is spent at my desk or on the sofa. But I have been making plans to go to Frankfurt next weekend to meet some pensioners I met on holiday, so there's that. I might share a picture if you're all good. On the subject of sport, I had a bike ride today but it wasn't the best of ideas - it's been foggy and misty all day and I ended up with cold ears. I try to ride my bike to work on office days, it's a 20 km round trip so a pretty decent workout. But I don't do it that often as I'm a right old wimp - a hint of rain or morning frost and I'm out. Enjoy Skeg Vegas @Chris and family!
  20. Aaaand the results: Blackburn Rovers 1-0 Swansea City QPR 1-2 Portsmouth Blackpool 1-2 Barnsley Lincoln City 1-3 Birmingham City Bradford City 2-1 Gillingham Port Vale 3-1 Fleetwood Town Maidenhead United 1-1 Hartlepool United Sutton United 1-3 Oldham Athletic --- Congrats to this round's winner @william1984! --- Overall, @super_ram remains top and the top three remain unchanged. @william1984 joins the leaders in fourth, while our biggest climber is @nottsnutter... --- The next fixtures are played on Tuesday night, so our next round is open now. Why not have a go? Thanks for playing and see you there!
  21. As we've got an (almost) full set of fixtures on Tuesday night, here are some more fixtures to predict! They all kick off at 7.45pm, and don't forget your joker! Cardiff City v Portsmouth Leeds United v Watford Bristol Rovers v Shrewsbury Town Peterborough United v Blackpool Fleetwood Town v Crewe Alexandra Tranmere Rovers v Grimsby Town Dagenham & Redbridge v Eastleigh Tamworth v Yeovil Town
  22. Temporarily closing this topic now as we've got another round on Tuesday night. I'll open it again once I post the scores, hopefully later today!
  23. It was a scruffy game won by a scruffy goal, but we hung on in there when we were struggling to join two passes together in the first half and showed a marked improvement in the second. That'll do for me!
  24. To put that into context, we kept eight clean sheets in the whole of last season. There's no need to change things unnecessarily now that Nessie has been discovered and McDonald has returned from his farm. However, it does give us a bit more strength in depth and competition in an area in which we were a bit thin. They won't go straight into the team, but they've got an incentive to force their way into the first 11.
  25. Blackburn Rovers 2-1 Swansea City QPR 1-0 Portsmouth Blackpool 2-0 Barnsley Lincoln City 1-3 Birmingham City Bradford City 2-1 Gillingham Port Vale 1-1 Fleetwood Town (joker) Maidenhead United 2-1 Hartlepool United Sutton United 2-2 Oldham Athletic
