"A Deserved Point" – Stuart Maynard on Notts County's Tough Draw with Morecambe

PON_News

Notts County head coach Stuart Maynard expressed mixed emotions following his side's hard-fought 1-1 draw away at Morecambe.

Matty Platt’s late equaliser, set up by a sublime Sam Austin cross, salvaged a point for the Magpies in a match that began poorly for the visitors.

Despite the draw, Maynard believes the result could have been different had Notts capitalised on key moments and avoided the early concession.

Reflecting on the game, Maynard acknowledged the difficulty of falling behind so early, as Morecambe struck within the opening two minutes. "When you concede that early in the game, it becomes very difficult," Maynard said.

"Places like this make it hard for you, and I thought they were very good at what they did today." The early goal shifted the dynamics of the game, forcing Notts to battle uphill from the start.

Despite the setback, Maynard was pleased with his team’s resilience, adding, "The character and the mentality we've got in this group now to keep going – we said it at half-time, keep going all the way to the end because we’re going to get some big moments."

The first half saw Notts struggle to break down a well-organised Morecambe side, who were relentless in their defensive efforts. Although Maynard’s team controlled much of the ball, they found it hard to create clear-cut chances.

"We said at half-time our quality wasn’t good enough," he noted. "We needed to be more composed in the final third, and I think we saw that in the second half."

One of the game’s key moments came when Austin delivered an inch-perfect cross into the box, which Platt converted to score his first goal for the club.

"What a ball across the box for the goal, it was outstanding," Maynard said, praising Austin’s contribution. "I’m delighted for Sammy [Sam Austin] because his work ethic again today was brilliant."

Platt’s goal was crucial, and although Maynard had identified set pieces as a possible source of goals, it wasn’t in the manner they had planned.

"We thought we could probably score from set pieces today," Maynard said. "It didn’t kind of happen like that, but for Platty [Matty Platt] to get his first goal for the club is brilliant."

The game saw Morecambe set up differently than expected, which did not come as a surprise to Maynard. "Every team that plays us sets up differently," he explained.

"We always prep with two or three different game plans on how teams are going to press us." Notts had to adapt throughout the match, and despite dominating large parts of the second half, the breakthrough came late.

Maynard also touched on what could have been a turning point in the match when Morecambe’s left-sided centre-back, already on a booking, committed a foul on George Abbott. "It should have been a red," Maynard remarked. "It could have been a different game, but we’ll take the point and go again."

The game saw the debut of new signing Josh Martin, a winger signed as a free agent. "He’s a talented footballer," Maynard said. "He can play on either flank, dribble, and go by players. We believe we’ve signed a good player there."

As for injury concerns, Maynard provided an update on Jodi Jones, who is set to miss several weeks following an injury picked up in the previous game.

"We’re waiting on the results of his scan, but we don’t anticipate him being back soon," he said. "Jodi’s a huge miss for us. You look at his goal contribution and assists this season – when you miss big players, it has an impact."

Maynard expressed frustration at the trend of physical fouls his team has endured in recent games, which have contributed to their growing injury list. "Jodi’s been injured from it, and other players have too," he said. "It’s something we need to cut out of the game."

Despite the challenges, Maynard remains optimistic about his side’s ability to bounce back, stressing the importance of squad depth as Notts County navigates a gruelling season ahead.

had we played more like we did from the 70th minute mark, but sooner we would have won the game but the lads digged deep to win the point. morecambe made it hard, the first half especially and we had some good chances. i think george abbott should have scored his chance, but hes young and will get a goal if he continues to work as hard as he is. i thought stuart maynard the right chances, maybe we needed one or two sooner but thats easy in hindsight.

Another tough match, but Notts showed their mettle once again. Conceding so early was unfortunate, putting us on the back foot from the start. However, the team's response was remarkable, demonstrating strong mental fortitude. Maynard’s halftime adjustments seemed to make the difference as the second half was significantly better. Sam Austin's cross for Platt’s goal was superb, a real moment of quality. It’s clear the team has areas to improve, particularly in creating and finishing chances. Excited about Josh Martin’s debut; he could provide the spark we need. Here’s hoping for fewer injuries and more points in the coming games.

Really impressed by the team's fighting spirit. Conceding so early could have crushed morale, but Notts displayed immense resolve. Morecambe's defensive setup was hard to break, but the persistence paid off with Sam Austin’s brilliant cross and Platt’s first goal. Hats off to Maynard for keeping the squad motivated. It’s evident that we need to be more clinical in the final third, but the potential is there. I'm optimistic about Josh Martin’s debut; he could be a game-changer for us in future fixtures. Let’s hope for fewer injuries moving forward. COYP!

I'm going to give Stuart Maynard credit for his substitutions that gave Notts the impetus to get the point that they deserved.

Morecambe had a game plan and it very nearly worked for them but a bit of quality from Crowley when it was needed helped to get a point for Notts.

Last season Notts would have lost a match such as this but this season Notts are made of sterner stuff. McGoldrick clearing off the line in the final minutes demonstrated just this.

Notts fought hard, and we need to remember that the changes we made had an impact. The lads who went off had tried their best and were exhausted. We needed that effort, and the point is a good one despite the chances we had. I have no complaints about the draw. I know some will be disappointed, and I felt that in the first half, but watching David McGoldrick and Dan Crowley put in good performances, and then seeing the changes in the second half push for the draw, showed real spirit!

It’s unfair to blame Stuart Maynard for the draw. Some fans need to accept that we will have days like this and Notts won’t win every game. If they hold onto the desire for promotion, it’s best to be patient and encouraging, as every point matters when it reaches the crucial end of the season. It’s such a good point, considering Morecambe could have had a second, and it would have been goodnight for us had that happened. A well-fought, solid point.

Conceding within the first two minutes had me fearing the worst, but the lads showed incredible heart. Maynard’s halftime talk must have hit the right notes because the second half was much improved. Sam Austin’s cross for Platt’s equaliser was a piece of magic. While a draw doesn’t sound like much, given the circumstances, it’s a point well-earned. The team showed grit and determination throughout. Shame about the referee not showing red to their centre-back, though.

It’s frustrating to see another game marred by questionable refereeing decisions. The challenge on Abbott should have resulted in a red card, which might have changed the game's outcome. That said, I’m proud of how Notts handled the early setback. Conceding immediately could have been disastrous, but the character and resilience shown were commendable. Sam Austin’s pinpoint cross and Platt’s goal were definite highlights. Maynard’s strategies are working, and despite the draw, it feels like a victory given the context. We need to focus on our finishing in front of goal next.

Some fans want to win every game, but that’s just not realistic. Some will just want to see a good performance, but football isn’t always like that. If Notts can win games, it will be because they deserved it and worked hard. Draws aren’t the end of the world. Losing is the worst scenario for a promotion-chasing team. The fact we avoided that speaks volumes. The next win should be big for returning the confidence and morale of the squad.

In the face of adversity, Notts showcased tremendous spirit against Morecambe. Conceding a goal within the first two minutes could have set a grim tone, but the team’s unwavering dedication shone through. Maynard’s halftime adjustments and the players’ resolve marked the turning point. Sam Austin's superb cross, leading to Platt’s equaliser, highlighted the tactical nous and grit within the squad. The character displayed across the 90 minutes, battling against a well-drilled defence, is exactly what’s needed moving forward. It was a deserved point, and one that will hopefully boost morale for the fixtures ahead.
