Martin Paterson says he is “delighted” to lead Notts County in his first competitive home game as head coach but stresses his focus is firmly on performance and preparation ahead of today’s 12:30pm kick-off against Salford City at Meadow Lane.

The Magpies head into the fixture on the back of a 1-1 draw away at Newport County, where Jodi Jones’ penalty salvaged a point. While Paterson acknowledges the excitement of stepping out in front of the home crowd, he is keen to temper emotions with a professional approach.

“Yes, it's exciting. I'm looking forward to it, but I always kind of err on the side of caution with excitement as a head coach,” he said. “My objective is clear at home games and be prepared properly for Salford. So, yes, I'm delighted to have the first home game, but I know the responsibility that I carry in terms of a performance and a result.”

Paterson has already had a taste of Meadow Lane from the dugout during the pre-season friendly against Cardiff City, but he expects today to carry an extra edge. “It is, but I thought the crowd were fantastic against Cardiff, to be fair,” he added. “There’s no difference in terms of what I expect from the group every game. There's no friendlies. When the lights go on, it is different, and the players are aware of that. Again, I'll keep going back to our preparation this week. We're ready.”

Notts’ preparations have been boosted by the addition of 19-year-old midfielder Tyrese Hall on loan from Tottenham Hotspur. “He's had a good week in training, a full week. Delighted to get him over the line. We're fully aware of why we've brought him in and it just heightens everybody else as well because competition for places this week has been really good to see in training,” said Paterson.

That competition has been particularly fierce following the draw at Newport. “We didn't win at the weekend, so when that happens it's never a good thing for a coach,” he explained. “The positives from that is that it's open season really for competition for places because we didn't win. The players know they're expected to win games. We know how hard the division is, so let's not underestimate oppositions because Salford will be a really tough game. Training this week has been uncomfortable in moments because I've made them compete.”

Asked about managing a crowded midfield, Paterson was clear that his priority is performance, not keeping everyone happy. “That's not my job, to keep them happy. Their job is when they get the shirt to play for Notts County, especially at Meadow Lane, their job is to perform and stick the ball in the back of the net. And if they do that, very, very unlikely I'm going to change them. I will change personnel dependent on opposition and I'll also change if I feel that the person hasn't performed. The players all know that.”

Paterson confirmed recruitment remains ongoing but kept details close to his chest. “I'm still active, still working with the recruitment team, all of us together are having daily conversations. So yes, I believe there will be movement. Not necessarily permanent, but we'll see.”

With a busy schedule ahead, including back-to-back midweek matches, Paterson is unfazed. “It won't impact us at all, if I'm being brutally honest. What it gives is people opportunity to perform well and stay in the team.”

Looking at today’s opponents, Paterson recognises the challenge. “Yeah, tough game. I’ve watched the game against Crewe, bits and bobs of other games, but the focus this week has been on us. Still, we’ve done our due diligence on Salford. They’re a good team and I’m expecting a really tough game.”

Sounds like the players have had a tough week in training. That’s how it should be.

The thing I take most from this is how much Martin Paterson values preparation. He’s not getting carried away by the occasion of his first home game, and that’s exactly the right approach. Newport was frustrating, but he’s clearly using that result to drive standards in training. Making it “uncomfortable” at times is no bad thing if it gets more out of the players.

Salford won’t be easy, but I like that Paterson isn’t underestimating them.

This feels like a proper head coach’s mindset. The bit that stands out to me is how much importance Paterson puts on preparation and competition. Saying it’s “open season” after the Newport result is brilliant because it tells the squad that no one is safe if they don’t perform. I think that’s how you keep standards high over a long season. It’s also good to see that new signings like Tyrese Hall are making an impact in training already. Salford are no pushovers and Paterson clearly respects that, but the fact he’s kept the main focus on Notts is a good sign. We can’t control how they play, only how we do.

So many managers try to please everyone, but he’s up front about the fact his job isn’t to keep players happy. It’s about picking the best team for each game and getting results. I like that he’s prepared to change things based on the opposition as well. It shows he’s not afraid to adapt. Salford will definitely be a challenge, but you can tell from his comments that he’s done the analysis and is focused on what Notts need to do to win. Hall’s arrival is another positive, as competition in the squad is always healthy. Really looking forward to seeing how we perform at Meadow Lane today.

I’ve been impressed with Martin Paterson’s attitude since he came in. He’s clearly not interested in playing up the occasion for himself and is instead concentrating on the job in hand. The honesty about team selection is refreshing too, it’s not about keeping players happy, it’s about results. The players will know where they stand with him, and that can only help. I think his approach to training after the Newport draw will get a response from the squad. Making things competitive in those sessions ensures everyone stays sharp. Salford will test us, but with the Meadow Lane crowd behind the team and Paterson’s focus on preparation, I’m confident we can put in a strong showing.

i like that we train more if we did not win and i like the message martin paterson sends with it. he seems to be winning more fans over and all we need to do is to start picking up those vital points. paterson wants to be judged on results, but i think the performances we have seen so far are encouraging.

I think Paterson’s approach is exactly what we need this season. It’s not about making the occasion bigger than it is, it’s about being ready to perform. His comments on Tyrese Hall are encouraging because it shows the club are still improving the squad and adding depth. I also like how he’s made training competitive this week after the draw at Newport.

That’s the right reaction. No player should feel their place is guaranteed, especially if results aren’t there. Salford will be organised and dangerous, but if we match Paterson’s attitude on the pitch, I think we’ll have a good chance of getting the result we want.

It's a game that we have all been looking forward to. Martin Paterson has been impressive during the pre season. The squad has seen many changes in the summer &.Martin has played his part with those changes.

The team showed us what they can do under Martin's leadership with an impressive display against Newport. Martin recognises that the game against Salford will be a big test for his team, but I'm sure that Martin would have prepared the team well.

A lot of questions about the credentials of this team will be answered today depending upon the result. With the help of a passionate & noisy ML, I think those answers will be very positive today.

Paterson speaks well here. Clear focus on preparation and performance over hype.

It’s not going to be an easy game and it sounds like Paterson is fully aware of that judging by what he says about preparation. By the sounds of it he lets the players know who’s boss and works them hard. I’m looking forward to the game.
