Moniz calls for improvement in attack

Joe Jones

Ricardo Moniz has made it clear that his Notts County side need to be more clinical and incisive in attack if they are to progress in League Two this season. The Magpies succumbed to a meek 2-0 defeat at Meadow Lane against bitter rivals Mansfield, a loss that changed the mood among the Notts faithful from euphoric to funereal within 90 minutes.

Aside from the two poorly conceded goals, another worrying thing for Notts was how little they offered in the final third – Stags goalkeeper Brian Jensen was barely tested all game.

Moniz said: “We were not able to create anything in the first half… in the first two games I was critical about that. In difficult games where it's so close you need the escape.

"In the first half, Jenner, instead of shooting, he had to pull the ball back. In the second half we had the cross from Burkey but it's not enough to be a favourite team (to go up) when we are so limited up front.

"This is not an offence to anyone, but you need that extra quality against a compact wall of defenders.

"Jon was too isolated in the first half. He needed support from Jimmy Spencer – he was fresh. They have to create chances but they depend on the crosses and Mansfield were very organised at the back.

"We had the cross from Burke and two possibilities with Jenner. This is not enough. Blair Adams and Scott Bennett have to overlap so we can create more."

Notts have the chance to redeem themselves almost instantly with Tuesday evening’s visit of Oxford United.

I am not sure a single striker at home will work, away from home it seems fine but we just don't create enough chances at Meadow Lane to warrant it. I really hope we start to see a partnership form, either give Campbell a chance or look to use the 100k we tried to sign McLeod with.

No doubt we need to see more upfront and it terms of procession at home.

That said, not every game will be like Mansfield. COYPs!!!

im sorry but wtaf!? bennett needs to overlap? he shouldnt of been playing RB anyway, yes Amevor and swerts were gone but we had sharpe? hes a lb who loves running up the field. give him a chance at rb. atkinson aswell! he shouldnt of played a slow, strong and have no stamina kind of player at rb ffs. yes the attack wasnt good enough but when you have a players like spencer and campbell sitting on the bench for the first hal to only see spencer make an apperence in the second when we knew our attack was weak and their defenders were strong! also, in the first half we saw Sprockel ( who had an awful game ) got taken out within the first couple of minutes, he didnt play well after that... yet Moniz insited on making two subs at half time which wasnt the injuryed Sprockel. 7 minutes later sprockel is taken out forcing Moniz to use his 3rd and final sub. he should of used his head and relised. not good enough.

No, I agree with Moniz we did not support ourselves going forward and that forced the mistakes in the passing.

If we are going to play the ball on the ground, the full backs need to give us more going forward.

Burke changed the game, he got crosses in but nobody attempted to get onto the end of them. I do agree with Joe that not every game will be like Mansfield but it was a very poor way to greet the home fans.

there was nothing to our attacks in the first half, just a lot of wasted opportunities and that for me is the thing which needs to see improvement. i am not convinced that the full backs are the problem, i think the wingers need to step it up themselves.

Two strikers at home, play people who are fit and ready to get stuck in.

I felt Moniz just stuck to playing the same old against Oxford and that does not always work. Is he scared to make changes? Give more deserving players a chance?
