Notts County Sign Ex-Norwich Winger Josh Martin on Short-Term Deal

PON_News

Notts County have bolstered their attacking options with the signing of 23-year-old winger Josh Martin on a short-term deal.

Martin, a free agent, arrives at Meadow Lane after being part of Portsmouth’s League One title-winning squad last season.

A product of both Arsenal and Norwich City’s academies, Martin brings experience at various levels, having made five Premier League appearances for Norwich as a teenager during the 2019-20 season.

He was also part of the squad that secured the Sky Bet Championship title the following year, before loan spells at MK Dons, Doncaster, and Barnsley helped him gain further first-team experience.

County’s Director, Richard Montague, expressed his delight at securing the deal. "Right up to the end of the transfer window, we were interested in adding another attacking option. With Curtis Edwards facing a long-term injury and Jodi Jones still under assessment, we felt it was crucial to take action," Montague said.

"To sign a player of Josh’s calibre at this stage is fantastic. While he is primarily a winger, we believe his technical ability allows him to operate centrally within our system."

Martin's short-term contract runs until January, giving the promising forward a window of opportunity to make an impact in League Two.

Following a summer trial with Serie A side Como, Martin now has his sights set on establishing himself in County’s squad as they push for continued success under Stuart Maynard.

With his versatility and pedigree, Martin is expected to provide valuable depth and competition in the attacking areas, as the Magpies look to navigate the challenges of the season. Notts fans will be eager to see what he can bring to the side in the months ahead.

It's positive that Notts have acquired the services of Josh Martin, because it will give Stuart options on the left, & he can also operate as a central attacker

Curtis is going to be out of the side till at least January, & with Jodi being assessed regarding his recent injury, it is a good move by Notts.

Josh has the opportunity to make an impression up until January, & if he succeeds, he could be offered a contract by Notts.

the short term deal sounds like he is arriving only as a cover, but i suppose it sees how he will do in our system and could always be extended. i am not suggesting the deal is bad due to length, so we will have to wait and see how he does in our team.

This is an exciting signing, especially given the injuries we've had recently. Josh Martin has shown he can compete at a high level, having made Premier League appearances for Norwich and played in League One for Portsmouth. His versatility is a major plus, as we’ve been a bit light in attacking options. The fact that he’s only 23 and has so much experience is impressive.

I think it’s good that the club has decided to bring someone in, and finding a player with this kind of experience at this stage is a good thing. I was wondering if an attacking option would come in because Cedwyn Scott is out, as a way not to rush him back. A winger does give some cover, but I thought Kellan Gordon would fill that role. It’s good for depth, but it does leave some questions.

With the inclusion of the youth players against Burton, I hope some of them can get minutes if we need cover. Don’t get me wrong, I am glad to see the club bring in more quality and depth, but they need minutes. Josh Martin sounds like a very good signing, even if it is only for a short time. Still, if he does well enough, we can always extend, so it’s a win-win.

Martin’s signing could be just what we need. Having played for clubs like Norwich and Portsmouth, he brings a winning mentality, which will be crucial as we continue our push in the league. His ability to play both out wide and centrally gives Stuart Maynard more tactical flexibility, which is always a plus. With Edwards out long-term and Jones still a question mark, this move seems perfectly timed.

But it’s not just about filling gaps. If Martin can rediscover the form that earned him those Premier League appearances, we might be looking at a game-changer. It’s a short-term deal, but it could be enough time for him to make a real difference. I’m optimistic, but like with any signing, we’ll have to wait and see how it plays out on the pitch.

Josh Martin seems like a fantastic signing for us, especially given his experience at such a young age. The fact that he can play in different positions makes him even more valuable for the squad, especially considering our recent injuries. Hopefully, he settles in quickly and helps us push on through the season.

A Warm Welcome to the Lane Josh.

However with him being mainly a Winger, this does Not bode well for Jodi's injury the Club seem mighty quiet about what's happened to Jodi. I would have thought if there wasn't much to worry about Jodi being out of the side for a lengthy period of time, there wouldn't be any need to sign a player in his position.

He looks like a good signing. It might have been him who asked for the short-term deal to keep his options open, but I hope if he does well, we extend his stay.

Good to see the club bringing in reinforcements after recent injuries. Josh Martin looks like a solid pick-up. Coming from a Premier League background and a title-winning side at Portsmouth, he’s got that winning experience. Plus, he’s still young, which means he’ll be eager to prove himself at this level. It’ll be interesting to see if he slots into the wing or more centrally in Maynard’s set-up, but either way, we could use the extra attacking threat. It’s only a short-term deal, so hopefully, he makes an impression quickly. I think this could be a very smart move.
