In this featured article I am going to provide some information on the youth setup here at Notts County. I am then going to offer my opinions on If I think it is good enough and compare it to a few different academies in the EFL. I think for such a big club in the lower leagues it’s an important factor within a football club to have a solid base in the academy stages of football.
On August 20th this year it was announced that Steve Chettle would be responsible for managing the club’s development side competing in the Central League North Division along with any cup matches that would be played. So far, we have played Wigan Athletic and Port Vale. We drew 1-1 with Wigan and lost 5-3 to a Port Vale side with the likes of Idris Kanu and David Worrall in it. Although it has not been the best of starts it’s important to remember that teams can field first team players in this competition.
For a number of years now academy products have struggled to break through into the first team. This season it was portrayed by ex-manager Kevin Nolan and Alan Hardy that youth was a big focus point this season, especially with the signings of Noor Husin from Crystal Palace in January and the latest arrivals of Will Patching from Manchester City and Tom Crawford from National League South side Chester.
The following is a list of all players within the registered first team that are 21 or under: Max Culverwell, Pierce Bird (19), Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain (20), Declan Dunn, Noor Husin (21), Will Patching (19), Tom Crawford (19), Samuel Osbourne (19), Alex Howes (18) and Remaye Campbell (17).
Previously Notts have been accused have not been focusing on the academy and youth with the past departures of Curtis Thompson, Haydn Hollis, Jordon Richards and Dongda He. It is frustrating to see that we let players like this go for free transfers or released and then replace them with more players that need the same development. Nowadays young players need to be nurtured and guided into the first team.
The prime example of a quality youth system would be Exeter City. They have made millions from slowly developing players like Ethan Ampadu who now starts for Wales, as well as Ollie Watkins who left for Brentford for a reported 1.75 million. Ampadu’s fee was to be settled by tribunal but later reported to be around the 1.25 million mark.
Ampadu was at the Exeter City academy for 10 years while Ollie Watkins was there from the age of 9 being there for 10 years before moving into the first team. Exeter City have made their mark on the youth system and prove to be leading the way for fees received for youth players and what they have achieved is truly remarkable.
I think it is important for Notts County to learn from teams like Exeter and nurture players from the ages of 9/10 so when they do turn 18/19 they can become league players or be sold onto big teams like Watkins and Ampadu for massive figures which can pay for facilities and transfers in the future.
This season Notts have bought young players and chucked them straight into the development side which I can understand as they need developing but I disagree with paying fees for players that are young as it completely bypasses the whole grass roots stage of Notts County Football Club from the ages of 12 onwards.
What is the motivation for players like Alex Howes who was on the brink of first team football at one stage now being pushed back into the U21’s just for paid transfers such as Patching and Crawford to take his place. I think this is where were going wrong and instead of developing players properly and with the right coaching we just seem to bypass the grass roots stage and just buy young players with the hope of them being ready in a year. I am sorry, but I just don’t think academy football works like that.
Chettle now has a project on his hands and talking in terms of youth players I think he should deal with what he has got and nurture and develop these players into League proven players so that Notts can be a stepping stone for players such as Osbourne, Patching and Husin and then do what Exeter have done and receive huge sums of money which at our level could make or break a club quite literally.

It disappointed me when we let Dongda He go because I can only feel that Hardy was desperate for the cash at the time, I believe he was offered a pro contract behind the scenes as he was breaking into the first team. Dongda He could have been our first million-pound player but instead we cashed in early and just let him go.
At the age of 19 I feel strongly about the youth system at Notts as I can’t understand the sort of pressure that young players face in the modern football game as at the age most of them are it can quite easily send them down two career paths, one in football or one not in football. It’s only a matter of time before the likes of Osbourne, Campbell and Bird are picked up by teams in higher leagues for buttons.
I would like to ask the members of Pride of Nottingham to discuss this further as I think it is a topic within the football club which is shadowed by the performances of the first team. Let me know your thoughts and hopefully we can create a good discussion on such an important topic.

Fan Introduction
Name: Matt
Age: 15
How long have you supported Northampton Town? Ever since I had my first season ticket at 7-8 years of age.
Are you a season ticket holder? Yes
Favorite Player: John Joe O’Toole
How do you think Northampton have done so far this season in terms of form and expectations for the season?
In terms of results, way below expectations as we haven’t been as good at finishing teams off to get the 3 points, overall the quality of football has been good, but we haven’t been able to wrap up wins and we’ve been punished on several occasions for not doing so.
Which player left in the summer who you think could have been needed this season?
Personally, I think the loss of goalkeeper Richard O’Donnell to Bradford is a big loss as the fans loved him and when he left to go to Bradford he was in brilliant form for us. In my opinion he could have been key to a promotion push this season.
Notts County are looking at getting a sponsored stadium name. How do you feel about Sixfields becoming the PTS Academy stadium? Is it welcomed at the club or looked down on?
Personally, I hate it. I think most of the fans do. Sixfields is the name of the retail park so to have it as our stadium name made perfect sense. If you have sponsored stadium name, the name has to work for example Stoke and the Bet365 stadium. For me, the PTS Academy Stadium doesn’t roll off the tongue well and it will always be Sixfields in my eyes.
Who is the biggest threat when going forward and why?
Kevin Van Veen and JJ O’Toole are threats when they play off one another. Van Veen is a proven league one striker and we are lucky to have him in league two and he could be vital this season for us if he can grab 20 plus goals.
How would you sum up last season where you were relegated from League One? What went wrong?
Last season Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was in charge (for the majority) and fans blamed not only a poor style of play but most of all the lack of passion is believed to be one of the main reasons we faced the drop. We had quite a few on loan last year meaning that Northampton wasn’t their main club relegation didn’t really bother them as their parent clubs were at a higher level. Players such as David Buchanan, JJ O’Toole and Ash Taylor were just a few who showed some fighting spirit to stay up. 8 of the 11 last year didn’t seem to bother.
As an opposition fan, which player are you most worried about facing from Notts County?
Jon Stead and Kane Hemmings are the Notts County danger men up top with both being well established EFL players. I look forward to seeing how they get on against the likes of Taylor and Pierre at the back and see if they know the formula for getting past them.
Finally, what will be your score prediction for this game along with the goal scorers?
The Cobblers desperately need a home win, so I’ll go for a nervy 2-1 Northampton win. Van Veen and Crooks for the Town and Hemmings for County.
Final Comments from Sam and Chris
Sam and Chris would like to thank Matt who has taken the time to answer a few of our questions in detail for our Pride of Nottingham members to read. It is interesting to see what an opposition fan thinks about Notts County and current issues going on surrounding their club. Finally, Sam’s score prediction for this weekend is a hopeful 3-1 away win with Alessandra and Hemmings being the scorers. Meanwhile Chris thinks the score will be exactly the same 3-1 in Notts favour, Stead, Boldewijn and Ward to score.

Jon Stead has suggested that Notts County's players have not been "putting in the miles" as he spoke about the team's poor form of late.
There has been much discussion about lack of fitness among the fans as the Magpies remain stuck at the bottom of League Two with just two points to their name all season.
Indeed, new manager Harry Kewell has claimed that his players need to get fitter and that they are making poor errors because of tiredness.
"It's a difficult one. It might not even be the fitness. It might be that we've not been putting in the miles we need to," Stead told the Nottingham Post.
"Maybe that's down to a lack of confidence, but there's no excuse. No matter how bad things are going you put 100 percent in and you work hard to get to the ball.
"We've got to show a real obvious statement that we are working hard as a team. That will translate through the lads.
"We've got to help each other out. You can't be in a difficult position and expect someone else to get you out of it. We can't rely on Enzio to curl one in from 25 yards every week.
"It's the same at every club. If players are having a tough time and results aren't good then fans want to see players working hard for the shirt, working hard to put a performance in.
"The fans were brilliant [in the Stevenage game]. They stuck with us all day. It's probably been an entertaining game for good and bad reasons, but I think fans saw that work ethic.
"We want to get better and improve. I do feel progress is being made. Fans will look at it and feel it's difficult to see that progress, but steps are being taken.
"We've just got to keep working at it. It takes hours and hours on the training ground to get it right."

Harry Kewell has claimed that he knew exactly what he was getting into when accepting the Notts County manager's job.
The Magpies have endured a spectacular fall from grace in going from the playoff semi-finals last season to dropping right to the foot of League Two.
Kewell lost his first two matches in charge but managed to scrape a point in Saturday's 3-3 draw with Stevenage, albeit having been pegged back three times.
"I knew exactly what I was getting into. I'd watched a couple of games beforehand so I knew the level they were at," the Australian told the Nottingham Post.
"It's hard to get fitness into a team when pre-season has gone. It's the most important time for a player.
"Pre-season sets you up. The way I've set them up, for 45, 50 and 60 minutes we're looking good and strong. We need to top that up now."

Notts County sit bottom of the league two table after drawing 3-3 against Stevenage at home on Saturday 15th September.
Jon Stead's goal 22 minutes in took Notts ahead, which was then even when Danny Newton scored an equaliser at the 38 minute mark.
Enzio Boldewijn scored another goal for the Magpies followed by another equaliser from Stevenage's Cedric Evina. Half time finished as a draw, 2-2.
In the second half, Notts County's Kane Hemmings scored a leading goal which was again equalised by Stevenage's Danny Newton.
With the match ending in a draw, The magpies need to work hard to get off the bottom of the table and stop conceding as many goals.
How did the fans react to the draw against Stevenage after a long spell of losses? Notts County had lost six games in a row before Saturday's match.
Heres a round-up of some of the post-match reaction.
Harry Kewell
"We were very positive, especially in the first half. Our legs went kind of at the end of the game. Stevenage play a simple way looking for flick ons. I'm disappointed we led three times and couldn't hold out.
"We're hurting but it's a point and something to build on.
"All the players worked hard and it's just a shame we didn't get three points."
Jon Stead
"We need to improve the ugly side of the game and make sure we win second balls, It’s about making sure we defend strongly, win the headers and clear it into the stands when we need to. We need to get better at that sooner rather than later.
"We’re working hard day in, day out to stop shipping goals like we have been and to become more solid at the back.
"With the way things have been going it’s really important that we’ve managed to stop the rot today, scoring three goals and taking a point from the game is a plus because we haven’t done that for a long time. We’ve shown we can create openings and it’s frustrating to have taken the lead three times but we have to take the positives."
Enzio Boldewijn
Jamie Turley
The Black and White Army on PON
CliftonMagpie: "The outfield players did their jobs today, I think the performance was better and not far from being okay.
We just have a massive issue with the keeper, he doesn't communicate and his attitude stinks at the moment. We can't sign more defenders, I felt these did well and was caught out by play that could of been prevented by the team. The first two goals we might as well played without a keeper."
liampie: "I'm worried about Notts, there was an improvement today but there is no little praise for giving the lead away three times. Notts would have had Stevenage, they looked poor but we gave them a way back into it every time we scored.
Notts looked good at times especially in the second half.
But the opening nerves crept in and times. i have little faith in Fitzsimons, people moaned about Collin for slowing down the game but all Ross does is give the ball away by blindlessly clearing it to the opposition."
Countyman: "There is finally something to build on now.
I am worried that the club doesn't realise that Fitzsimons is a shadow of his former self, I do hope that he can improve but I don't see it. I felt the defence looked better, all the signings fitted in and worked hard. It's just those moments when nobody takes responsibility that punishes Notts."
B&Wstripes: "Normally I would be frustrated but I feel a point has given Notts something to build on from.
I am not impressed with Fitzsimons but I hope if we can cut down the shots on target that he may find his hands again, either that or the confidence. I felt the KOP made a big impact and it was a lively response from the fans."
Sabretooth: "Played some really good attacking football. What's happened to Brisley and Fitzsimmons they are dire. Need Ben Hall back ASAP. Husin massive improvement, Alessandra, Stead and Milsom never stop seem to be the fittest 3 by a mile. Enzio is awesome needs more fitness."
Jimmy Gee: "Still feel most of our problems stem from a goalkeeper whose confidence has gone. Still flapping. Kicked ball straight at attacker when clearing from hand in the goal area. Not imposing himself on attackers. Passing out from his area to marked defender. Not communicating with defence. He must improve! Have we got to score 4 goals to win a game?"
David Burkley: "It's early days for Kewell but I saw enthusiasm and commitment today. Still mistakes at the back but I'm confident that once the new lads get up to speed they will be solid. Not sure about Brisley? We deserved the win today but I said before kick of I'd take the draw so can't complain. Stopped the rot, now fill it. COYP!"

Notts County put in a much improved performance in Harry Kewell's first home league game in charge but defensive issues came back to haunt the Magpies as they were held to a 3-3 draw by Stevenage at Meadow Lane.
Three times Notts went ahead in the game and three times they were pegged back by the visitors, yielding just a second point of the season.
Pride of Nottingham head honcho Chris reviews the game in this week's Tactical Talk piece.
Was the result fair?
I feel Notts was a little hard done by but in all, I would say the draw was fair – I just feel Notts attacked the game better.
How did Notts play?
There was a noticeable slow start to the game, Notts struggled to get to grips early on and Stevenage opened the game looking more keen to play the ball on the floor. Once down Notts looked good, they created chances but ultimately rushed the majority. The penalty decision seemed to provide the magpies with some confidence, however blips at the back made it hard.
Despite this Notts created and looked good, I wouldn’t class the game as entertaining but I feel less annoyed by the issues I witnessed. I do feel things can be improved from here, which could start to change the season around.
How did Stevenage play?
Stevenage looked capable of entertaining, they started off better and seemed more organised up front. They passed the ball around, however once the opening minutes’ settle cracks started to appear – defensively I don’t feel they did very well.
They worked hard to pull back level, playing some nice passes and executing some delightful passes. I just feel they never threatened enough and that the goals stem from a major lack of confidence in the back, they did enough to draw and I feel Stevenage fans should be happy with the away point.
Did our tactics work out?
I would say yes, training seems to have helped with the focus being on ‘working hard’. The new signings fitted in well, they gave Notts more grit at the back but defensively I feel we allowed ourselves to be fairly vulnerable.
Ross Fitzsimons needs to sort his tactics out, as his destitution painfully hurt the games tempo at times and his failure to listen to his team-mates/manager.
How did the referee perform?
The referee gave a few baffling decisions, he also lost the game from time to time due to this but overall he held the game together and I have little complains about any of the match officials.
Who do we play next?
Next up is Northampton Town, it’s hard to figure out how the team can move forward despite the positive. I am concerned about the goalkeeper position at Notts and I don’t want to sound negative – yet until this is addressed I don’t think there’s much more the defence can do.
I would hope to see the same amount of passion from the likes of Jon Stead and Enzio Boldewijn.
How should we play them?
Approach them the same as we did Stevenage, it will be harder away from home but it’s important to get the ball down as early as possible.
For me David Vaughan should return as the midfield isn’t as easy to bypass with him in midfield, I would like to see Rob Milsom take the torch for being the defensive minded ball winner – along with more enthusiasm on playing down the flanks.
Notts now has a back four that can do the club justice, so I would like to see them reduce the amount of crosses whilst focusing on the space created within the middle of our own penalty area. It’s important to attack the game creatively, yet to be as balanced at the back. There’s a lot more pace there, so if caught out – the defence should be good enough to work as a team. The question falls can we reduce the amount of shots that we have on target at our own goal? This would be a step forward since Fitzsimons confidence is severely absent now.

The Magpies took the lead midway through the first half as Ben Nugent brought down Jon Stead in the box for a penalty, which the veteran striker opted to take himself as he sent goalkeeper Paul Farman the wrong way.
Stevenage countered with their first equaliser seven minutes before the break through Ben Kennedy, who turned home Danny Newton's low cross, only to fall behind again on 43 minutes when the livewire Enzio Boldewijn cut in from the left and bent in his third goal of the season from 20 yards.
However, the first half ended all square as Alex Revell leapt above debutant Cedric Evina at the far post to connect with Steve Seddon's cross and loop a header beyond Ross Fitzsimons two minutes later.
Kane Hemmings restored the advantage four minutes after the break with a smart finish from Lewis Alessandra's through ball, but Notts were pegged back yet again after 73 minutes, Danny Newton connecting with a cross and drilling home a left-footed finish from eight yards.

Notts County will face Stevenage FC on Saturday for the first time this season at Meadow Lane. Notts County’s recent form over 5 games (LLLLL) sees them at the bottom of the table with just 1 point from the opening day against Colchester.
Meanwhile, Stevenage sit in a comfortable 11th with their recent form being (WDLLW). With inconsistent results, Stevenage will be looking to capitalize and be taking all three points at Meadow Lane from a run down Notts County side.
So far Stevenage have scored 7 goals conceding just 6 times in 7 games. With Notts scoring 7 goals and conceding an eye watering 21 goals in just 7 games. A win for Stevenage could see them move up to as high as 3rd place with results going their way. However, a win for Notts would move them up to 22nd providing results go their way.
Other fixtures to keep an eye on
Mansfield vs Exeter City
Crawley Town vs Morecambe
Macclesfield Town vs Lincoln City
Newport County vs Yeovil Town
Sam’s prediction
I think it will be a tough game with spirits still low in the camp. We have to turn this form around sooner or later or were going to have a right mess on our hands. With three games coming up that are all winnable, the rest of the month sees us face the likes of Crewe and Northampton, so this really is 9 points we have to fight for. We need to start with a win here. Im favoring a draw at 2-2 but my heart wants me to say a 2-1 win to Notts with Stevenage scoring first. Scorers being Hemmings and Brisely. We must defend corners and set pieces better. A clean sheet would do nicely too if we can manage that, but I think that’s asking for too much.
SkyBet odds
Notts County 7/5 – Draw 12/5 – Stevenage 19/10 (Fav)
Key men
Alex Revell – Revell has scored two times so far this season but also racking up 2 assists. This tells me that he will be a handful for our defense as his instinct is not only to shoot but to find that final ball to get the team the three points. Stevenage have a habit of scoring late on and Revell will be the man to help drive the team across the line.
Enzio Boldewjin – The quick pacey winger will be a match for the Stevenage full backs, especially if he keeps swapping wings. His trickery and ability to cut inside and gets shots off from inside and outside the area should worry the Stevenage defense.
Final thoughts
Stevenage have a habit of scoring late so we must not switch off in the second half and take our foot off the gas. They have a strong defense with some good prospects and experience in there. Paul Farman, Scott Cuthbert, Luther Wildin all apart of the back 4 that Stevenage operate. Notts County must find the weak points within their side and break them down quickly, apply quick pressure and press the ball high but remain vigilant to counter attacks from the likes of Danny Newton, Jimmy Ball and Alex Revell.

Notts have met Stevenage only 13 times including once in the FA Cup.
Notts wins: 6
Draws: 2
Stevenage: 5
Notts met Stevenage for the first time on September 17th, 2011 in League One, running out 2-0 victors at Broadhall Way.
In 2017-18, Notts took four points from Stevenage with the sides drawing 1-1 at Broadhall Way, with Notts winning the reverse fixture 2-0 after goals from Jorge Grant and Shola Ameobi.
Since 2015-16, where both teams have been in League Two, Notts have the upper hand with three wins to Stevenage’s one. The other two games being draws.
Stats
Stevenage got back to winning ways last Saturday with a 1-0 win at home to Macclesfield. This season they have won, drawn and lost each of their three away games. They currently sit in 11th place.
Notts are still looking for their first win. In 2013-14, Notts went winless for the first seven games (including losing their 7th game 5-1 like this season), gaining only one point. They then won their 8th league game of the season, which was at home. They then went on to win their next home game (10th league game of the season) at home to Crewe (who we also play on Matchday 10 this year). Reason for hope?
History
The club were founded in 1976, meaning they are one of the youngest clubs in the football league.
Stevenage have won the FA Trophy twice (2006-07, 2008-09)
They and Kidderminster Harriers set the record for highest attendance for an FA Trophy final with 53,262.
Boro were the first team to win a trophy at the new Wembley Stadium in that match against Kidderminster, winning 3-2 with current Millwall striker Steve Morison scoring the winner with two minutes left.
Graham Westley has had three spells in charge of Stevenage. His first spell between 2003-2006, he helped steady Boro. His second spell he helped earn them two promotions in a row, from the Conference to League One. His third spell was mixed, with the team getting relegated to League Two in 2013-14. They then made the play-offs in 2014-15 but were knocked out by Southend.
Time in each division
First Division (or Premier League): 0
Second Division (or Championship): 0
Third Division (or League One): 3
Fourth Division (or League Two): 5
Non-League: 30
Team news
Notts have quite a few injuries with Andy Kellett, Noor Husin, Matt Tootle, Richard Duffy, Ben Hall and Branislav Pindroch all out injured, while Dan Jones is suspended.
On the plus side, manager Harry Kewell will be in the dugout as he paid a £500 fine to the FA after admitting that his behaviour towards the referee against Exeter City was improper.
There are doubts ahead of the game over three Stevenage forwards - Danny Newton, Kurtis Guthrie and Alex Revell are all nursing knocks.
Otherwise, Boro's squad has a clean bill of health as they look to build on the 1-0 home win over Macclesfield Town last time out.

Notts County have signed defenders Cedric Evina and Jamie Turley on a free transfer.
Both players have experience of playing under new Notts boss Harry Kewell at previous club Crawley Town.
Left-back Evina spent last season on loan at the Checkatrade Stadium, having previously helped Doncaster Rovers win promotion to League One in 2016-17.
The 26-year-old began his career at Arsenal and also had stints at Oldham and Charlton Athletic.
As for centre-back Turley, 28, he made 34 appearances for Crawley last season before being released.
He made his way through non-league football before joining Newport County at the start of last season after rejecting a new deal with Eastleigh.
Notts have not disclosed the duration of each player’s contract, but are thought to be eligible face Stevenage at Meadow Lane on Saturday in Kewell’s first home league game in charge.
