  1. There is mitigation in some cases @YoopEyes, Ndlovu's red was debatable and you're always going to pick up yellows due to the nature of this league. If you're not "up for the fight", you won't even be in the running. Norburn's combative nature has done us good, but he's let us down twice now when every point counts. I've seen a few games now when he's been a red card waiting to happen - it's his responsibility not to be an idiot, but it's also down to MP to take him off when it's clear to everyone what's going to happen.
  2. The results: Charlton Athletic 0-1 Norwich City QPR 6-1 Portsmouth Stevenage 1-0 Reading Wigan Athletic 2-0 Exeter City Accrington Stanley 0-1 Chesterfield Shrewsbury Town 0-4 Crewe Alexandra Altrincham 1-0 Southend United Yeovil Town 3-2 Morecambe @super_ram claims the (imaginary) prize this week! There's little change overall, with @william1984 still leading the way... The next round is on Saturday, so keep your eyes peeled here for the fixtures on Wednesday. Thanks for playing, see you all then
  3. Interesting choice! Are you actually a sandwich man in Paris?
  4. Tuesday's results: Watford 3-1 Wrexham Luton Town 3-2 Exeter City Plymouth Argyle 1-0 Stevenage Bristol Rovers 1-0 Shrewsbury Town Tranmere Rovers 0-3 Harrogate Town Walsall 0-0 Cambridge United Southend United 3-2 Rochdale Woking 1-0 Yeovil Town Congratulations to @menzinho for winning this round! @william1984 still leads overall, while @super_ram moves back up into third: So that's Tuesday's round done; I'll count the scores for yesterday's round in the next couple of days. Thanks for playing!
  5. Cracking day of football yesterday in the land of the Germs. Our old friends Darmstadt are still unbeaten at home and still in the running for promotion to Bundesliga 1, but suffered a minor setback in a tense 1-1 draw against leaders Schalke. However, there's only a couple of points in it and the promotion race looks likely to go to the wire. Incidentally, most of Darmstadt's team against Schalke played against Notts in our pre-season friendly. The most familiar name in the Schalke team is Lothar Karius, the former Liverpool keeper who made a bit of a clown of himself in a Champions League final a few years back. In the third division, Waldhof Mannheim beat relegation certainties Erzgebirge Aue 2-1 thanks to a last-minute phantom goal from former Darmstadt and Kaiserslautern striker Terence Boyd. It probably didn't cross the line. This is what German fans affectionately call a "Wembley goal" after England's third in 1966! I watched both games from my armchair having caught a cold in the UK, but our very own @Dan was at both matches - would be interesting to hear his thoughts! And in the Bundesliga, former champions VfL Wolfsburg are inching ever closer to slipping out of the top flight for the first time since 1997. With modest fan support and their sponsors VW in dire financial straits, I wouldn't expect them to return any time soon.
  6. My vote has gone to the Iorpenda twins. But also a special gold star to Palmer and Norburn for their dominant display in the second half in particular, and for Bennetts for absolutely giving them the runaround after his introduction. We've got a strong bench now and that gives us an extra gear in matches like this.
  7. Loads of positives and not many negatives. The goals conceded were a throwback to the Williams era, but so was some of our attacking play. Both of Cheltenham's goals were gifts from us, but I thought they looked pretty handy and you could see they were high on confidence. The game could still have gone either way at half time, but the way we dominated the second half was so impressive. And being able to bring on subs like Norburn and Bennetts is the cherry on the cake. It just occurred to me that Steve Cotterill was the last manager to take us out of this division the right way, and we finished that season by sticking five goals past Cheltenham. I don't think we're a happy hunting ground for them.
  8. It's time I checked in again... I had a few days in the UK seeing family and attending a funeral, but unfortunately missing out on yesterday's win. I brought a slight cold back with me, although it seems to be waning now. It's €2.10 for unleaded here. Next time we come over we might bring the car for some "cheap" petrol! To add to your musings about driving lessons, I was taught by a man called Steve, who had nerves of steel. It took me two years to be ready for my test, but I passed first time. I took the test in a clapped-out Fiesta and was alarmed when, after stopping on a hill for a hill start, the car started creeping downhill despite the handbrake being on! Luckily it didn't count against me and the car has probably long been turned into cans of Vimto.
  9. I got a bit sentimental when changing it, but I think it's time. I dread the idea of introducing myself in real life as "DangerousSausage from the forum" Besides, a duck would definitely win in a fight against a sausage.
  10. 4-2, get in! Goal of the season contenders from Palmer and Iorpenda. Fun fact: of the ten goals we have scored this week, not one was scored by a striker.
  11. Is it me or have Cheltenham come dressed as Leeds United?
  12. I've seen the estimates from that website before. I have no idea what they're based on, but the clubs near the top are the ones I was expecting. The numbers are fantastical though. If Barrow are spending 4 million on players' wages then I'm Michael Sheen.
  13. Charlton Athletic 2-1 Norwich City QPR 2-1 Portsmouth (joker) Stevenage 2-0 Reading Wigan Athletic 1-0 Exeter City Accrington Stanley 0-2 Chesterfield Shrewsbury Town 0-2 Crewe Alexandra Altrincham 1-1 Southend United Yeovil Town 0-2 Morecambe
  14. Apologies for the delay, I've been away for a few days. But better late than never! Here are the scores from last Saturday: Norwich City 2-0 Preston North End Stoke City 3-1 Watford Doncaster Rovers 2-1 Blackpool Northampton Town 0-2 Burton Albion Crewe Alexandra 0-3 Walsall Shrewsbury Town 0-2 Cheltenham Town Boston United 2-1 Yeovil Town Southend United 2-0 Forest Green Rovers In the first round with my new user name, I've broken my duck (oh ho ho) with 14 points, followed by @ARLukomski with 11! Overall, @william1984 still leads, but @magpiejue has cut the lead to six points... I'll count and post Tuesday's points at some point during the weekend, and of course Saturday's round is live. Thanks for playing (and for bearing with me)!
  15. As I'm no longer 14, I've decided to dispense with DangerousSausage and adopt a new name instead. Every time I go to Meadow Lane, every third word seems to be "duck". So why does no one use it as their display name? Any similarity to persons living or dead is purely coincidental.
  16. I would be happy to see any lof those players sign on again for next season to be honest, with a few caveats. Matty Platt's contract should be renewed, but for a minimum of two years as he'll probably miss a fair chunk of next season. Kouhyar and Bennetts have contributed and Bennetts in particular has real potential, but I can see the club looking elsewhere for someone who would be an automatic starter. Norburn and McDonald have the quality (if not the brains in the case of the former), but their age might count against them. And as for Harry Tangen, I don't think we've seen the best of him yet but MP clearly rates him - let's see what he can do in the final weeks of the season.
  17. This is good news I wasn't expecting - I thought he'd be out for the season. But I still won't get too excited about seeing much of him in action with a little more than a month to go.
  18. It's time for the mystic magpies to look into their crystal balls again. Send 'em in by 3pm on Saturday and don't forget your joker! Charlton Athletic v Norwich City QPR v Portsmouth Stevenage v Reading Wigan Athletic v Exeter City Accrington Stanley v Chesterfield Shrewsbury Town v Crewe Alexandra Altrincham v Southend United Yeovil Town v Morecambe
  19. Watford 1-2 Wrexham Luton Town 1-0 Exeter City Plymouth Argyle 0-2 Stevenage Bristol Rovers 1-1 Shrewsbury Town Tranmere Rovers 2-1 Harrogate Town Walsall 2-1 Cambridge United Southend United 0-2 Rochdale (joker) Woking 2-0 Yeovil Town
  20. A full round of midweek matches awaits us! Please send in your predictions by 7.45pm on Tuesday and don't forget your joker! Watford v Wrexham Luton Town v Exeter City Plymouth Argyle v Stevenage Bristol Rovers v Shrewsbury Town Tranmere Rovers v Harrogate Town Walsall v Cambridge United Southend United v Rochdale Woking v Yeovil Town
  21. Nice article to mark International Women's Day. Of course appointing a woman is a first and raises eyebrows for that reason alone, but she'd risen through the ranks like any other coach and is respected by the players. Ingolstadt are an unglamorous and poorly supported club, but punch above their weight thanks to the sponsorship of Audi. I think the poor fanbase has helped Wittmann as she has been under less scrutiny and pressure than she would have been at Dresden or 1860. But she's well regarded in Liga 3 and appears to be doing a good job.
  22. "Fallen giants" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there for a club whose most successful era ended in 1930. By the same token, you could call Notts a fallen giant as we were part of the furniture at the top level until the mid-1920s. And playing at the "top level" pre-Bundesliga isn't much a boast as the top level was divided into eight regional divisions then. There are village clubs who can legitimately call themselves former top-flight clubs... Since then, Holstein Kiel have spent much of their existance knocking about in semi-professional football until their rise in the last 10-15 years. They were in the Bundesliga for the first time ever last season but are fighting relegation to the third division this season. All the same, and despite their relatively modest crowds, these plans are unambitious - the revamp will see a capacity of 22,000 (7,000 more than now), including 12,000 seats. Kiel is a big city and the club pretty much has Schleswig-Holstein to itself, so I think it could do better.
  23. I didn't see it (Champions League football on TV is way too expensive), but it's never a good sign when people send your goalkeeper "messages of support"...
  24. Genuinely disappointed by this. It's a sad day for nominative determinism. It'll be interesting to see whether they now kick on (as their board are clearly hoping) or it spells the end of their season.
  25. I agree with @menzinho - if Hinchy could hardly get a game during an injury crisis, when exactly is he going to play? Especially with the arrival of Tangen, who has spent much of his career playing in his position. Hinchy needs to play regularly to improve, but just isn't good enough to hold down a place ahead of Plamer, Robertson and Norburn. Catch 22. Hope he does well at Wealdstone but I think this is the end of him at Notts.
