Jon Stead has claimed that he knows exactly where Notts County fans are coming from when they say he should be out of the starting XI.

The veteran striker got off the mark in the 2-2 draw with Accrington Stanley, scoring from the spot, but many supporters believe he should be dropped to the bench in lieu of Jonathan Forte.

In response, Stead told the Nottingham Post: β€œIt’s not a tricky situation for me at all because I totally understand where fans are coming from.

β€œForts has come into games and got two goals. I get what they’re saying.

β€œAll I can do is my best on the pitch and work hard. I think I showed a real willingness to work hard and create things when I can against Accrington.

β€œIf it means I’ve got to harass and chase and do the ugly side when we’ve got good players who come off the bench and take advantage, then I feel I’m doing my job.

β€œForts has been fantastic. He’s probably disappointed not to start but while I’ve got my place I’ve got to do everything I can to keep it.

β€œA goal certainly helps that. I think I’m doing the rest of the bits for the team, tiring opponents out to hopefully give Forts a bit more joy when he comes on.

β€œIt’s pleasing to score but the result overshadowed the goal.”

Fair play Jon, there's no malice in wanting you dropped - it's simply that most fans just want Notts to start with their best options. Currently it feels we are starting with a disadvantage but hopefully whoever starts on Saturday can try to influence the game.

We are a team club, so we need to respect that.

I think if he was to use this in a possitive motivational manner indeed honk he can turn this around ... people say that fans being negative don't help but they pay his wages etc and he is taking the place of someone who can do better bares thinking about. @ChrisΒ good point well made fella

Jon Stead what a man!

I noticed a vast improvement against Stanley. The work he was doing off the ball and letting more quicker people run free (Grant, Hawkridge) was really good. However i am open to change and would just like to see Forte on for 90 mins. Other than that he deserves to keep his place.
