Notts County ace Matt Tootle has taken to Twitter to update fans on how he is following a comment he heard from a fan at Meadow Lane wondering whether he is okay.

The defender has had very little game time this season and hasn't featured in many of Neal Ardley's squads, but the player has reassured fans that his mental health is as good as ever.

Several years ago, Tootle spoke publicly about having battled mental health issues in the past, but in response to the fan who asked about his current state of mind, he said he was fine.

He added that his absence is purely football related, namely being out of favour.

Here are his tweets on the subject:

Some of the comments expressed online about Matt is nothing short of disgraceful, it's not right and this is football. I just feel Tootle needs to focus on his training and just go about doing whatever he can. A chance may come, he's a good player who can impress.

It's good to know he'sΒ mentally well, this shouldn't be knocked or used to justify a reason to get rid of him.

Neal Ardley has his mind set on what he expects, I just wished we could see the same standard being met by others who so far this season are falling short bar the odd wonder goal. It's about working hard for the badge and playing well, not earning selection just because you can score or do a few good things at random times.

Fans have to let Matt Tootle and Neal Ardley do whatever is best for the club, it's good to see he's okay and sounds determined to fight for his place.

Good attitude Matt, keep focused on impressing and your chance should come.

The club mishandled how they pushed Matt's depression out onto the fans, I don't think it should have been done and seemed at the time something quite dumb. I think Matt does well to open up, I can't imagine how hard it is but it seems like he might think his depression is connected without saying it.

Some fans need to look at themselves when it comes to what they write, say or tweet.

He has pressure on his shoulders which need not be there, what with the fans who think they know everything and a manager who hasn't used the media to tell what he can do to improve.

The rumour going round about players who Ardley hasn't signed being forced out doesn't help to build morale.

Bad PR all round but the fact Tootle has to address matters which the media seems uninterested says how shocking the news around this club can be.

It sounds like he understands it's about improving, if he does impress Neal Ardley should give him a chance but it seems hard to see how it will happen with the players available at the moment.
