Stuart Maynard Laments Offside Decision in Port Vale’s Decisive Goal Against Notts County

PON_News

Following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Port Vale at Meadow Lane, Notts County manager Stuart Maynard shared his frustrations, citing strong performance levels and questionable officiating as contributing factors in a match where Lorent Tolaj’s first-half goal proved decisive.

Reflecting on the game, Maynard expressed frustration with the outcome, particularly in light of his team’s early energy.

"I think in the first five or ten minutes, we came out of the traps. We said to the lads we need to make sure we get the crowd here rocking," he remarked.

According to Maynard, the team executed the game plan effectively and had several opportunities to take the lead. "We had probably three or four really good moments, and I think we should be going in 1-0," he continued, emphasizing his belief that his side should have scored early.

The match’s only goal came in the 23rd minute when Ronan Curtis set up Tolaj, who scored past County’s goalkeeper, Alex Bass.

Maynard, however, took issue with the goal, stating, "Their goal is offside and it’s a half foul. Would I say that it’s a definite foul? No, but it’s offside when you watch it back on the video. It is offside, so it is frustrating."

The defeat mirrored Notts County's recent 1-0 loss to Gillingham, another match where they struggled to convert chances. Maynard acknowledged the parallel, noting that while the team’s performance level was high, they faced challenges in putting games to bed.

He also highlighted the issue of players still working toward full match fitness, such as Robbie Cundy, Kairo Edwards-John, and Josh Knight, who came off the bench. "You can just see that little bit of match sharpness is lacking," he explained, pointing out that injuries have hampered the squad’s depth.

Maynard revealed that the team faces further injury setbacks, with Jodi Jones and Curtis Edwards side-lined for three months, while Connor Grant could be out for a minimum of six weeks.

Maynard also provided an update on David McGoldrick, who missed the match due to "a slight tightness in his tendon in his hamstring."

He stressed the importance of caution, explaining, "With the injuries that we’ve had long term, there’s no point risking him. We need to make sure everyone’s fit and 100% and ready to go."

In the closing stages, Notts County threw players forward in search of an equaliser, with Cundy moving into an emergency striker role.

Maynard praised the defender’s contribution, commenting, "Cuns comes on, and the goalie makes a great save from him. He heads it back where it’s come, and the goalie makes a great save."

Although Cundy nearly found the back of the net, Port Vale goalkeeper Connor Ripley ultimately kept County at bay with several impressive stops.

Maynard remained positive about the team’s resilience, despite recent results. "When you lose the game, it’s how you respond," he said, referring to Notts County’s response to their previous loss against Gillingham, which included a cup victory over Burton and a series of unbeaten league games on the road.

Looking ahead, he noted the importance of the upcoming fixture against Chesterfield, which carries additional significance due to the clubs' shared history from their National League days.

"We know it’s a huge game for the football club," he acknowledged. "We know all about the history behind how competitive it was when you guys were in the National League with them."

As Notts County prepares for their next test, Maynard and his team will focus on improving their finishing and maintaining their competitive edge.

While injuries have posed challenges, Maynard remains confident that the squad’s high performance level will soon yield results.

i think stuart maynard needs to try to avoid being one of those managers that complains when results does not go his way, we lacked the clinicalness up front and even if their goal was offside. he had the time to change it, but throwing robbie cundy up top as a striker shows how we do need a striker but then we allow junior morias to go out and fail to give jevani brown a try up top. i thought we did play well in spells going forward, but their goal reminded me so much of last season. alex bass could not have done anything about it.

Notts were the better side & on a different day would have scored in the first 20 minutes.

Teams are going to come to meadow lane & sit back and just wait for opportunities.

Notts need to be able to counter this because it will happen at every home game just like last season.

In this match we missed Jones, Didzy, Grant & Edwards. Notts need to be more incisive up front to break these teams down.

I hope that lessons will be learned for the next home match.

It was a tough loss to watch, especially when the lads showed so much promise early on. The disallowed offside goal feels like a sore point, understandably, but it can’t overshadow the bigger issue of squandered chances. It’s evident Maynard’s tactical decisions have brought about better gameplay so far, minus the finishing touch. With key players out, and the team structure constantly changing, everyone’s having to adjust on the fly, which is commendable. We’ve seen this happen often, our injured could come back to provide the spark we need. The Chesterfield match looms large, not just for standings but for pride as well.

Despite the loss, I’m encouraged by the players’ resilience. Our defence did well to limit further damage after the initial goal. The lack of goals is worrying, given our attacking talent, and it's critical we address this quickly. Maynard’s faith in the team is clear, but the team needs to reward that trust by executing more decisively on the pitch. Injuries are a part of the sport, but the frequency has been unfortunate. The lads adjusting and showing grit in games like this bodes well for our future challenges. Chesterfield is an opportunity to showcase that fighting spirit and turn outcomes in our favour.

I agree with Liam. Stuart Maynard can’t complain about the decisions when we had chances earlier in the game and could have turned things around. Robbie Cundy isn’t the right option to bring on when you want to score, even with his height. Why do we continue to refuse to play Cedwyn Scott as a striker despite his success for Gateshead in that role?

Yesterday's match was a tough pill to swallow for us fans. Losing narrowly and to an offside goal only adds to the frustration. Maynard’s right to be upset, but as supporters, all we can do is back the team and hope for more clinical discipline in the next outings. The keeper did his part; those saves were tremendous, but they shouldn't have needed to be that frequent. Injuries keep changing the game plan, putting more pressure on already tired players. But there are positives, like our ability to adapt under pressure and put up a good defence. The Chesterfield game is crucial. It's more than just points, it's about showing resilience and sparking that competitive spirit.

I think the changes show that we don’t have many options to turn games around. It’s fine if we are in control or winning. We really missed Jodi Jones yesterday, even though Kellan Gordon did well.

I agree with Stuart Maynard, it was offside, and they played quite dirty throughout the game. The referee let a lot of their behaviour go, but you’ve got to feel sorry for Port Vale, they missed an open goal, tripped over their own feet, and had a tall squad who complained about being bullied by much smaller players they couldn’t handle. Notts did everything but score!

Not much to cheer about from this match, unfortunately. The performance, while not poor, still left much to be desired. The decision against us was a harsh reminder of the uncertainties of football. Yet, one can’t help but think we wasted too many opportunities to stamp our authority on the game. The game's tempo was in our favour at times, yet we failed to make that count. Injuries have indeed taken a toll, but good teams find ways to win despite adversity. The squad will be back to full strength soon. Chesterfield is up next, and I've every belief the team will come out with renewed determination.

In the upcoming match against Chesterfield, we have more than points to fight for, it's a matter of pride, given our shared history. The team must channel the energy of past rivalries to galvanise our performance on the pitch. Success against them would not only boost morale but also reinforce our commitment and place in the league. The fans are optimistic and ready to back the players to the hilt. Let’s hope we can show the same resilience and hunger for victory that has defined us in previous encounters. Here’s to a thrilling contest and hopefully, a turning point in our season.
