Two new names emerge as contenders for Notts County manager's job

Joe Jones

Two new names have emerged in the running for the Notts County manager’s job.

One of those is Grimsby Town boss Paul Hurst, who led his side to the Conference play-off final last season, which they lost to Bristol Rovers at Wembley.

Hurst was a teammate of Notts head of recruitment Guy Branston at Rotherham United when they won promotion to the second tier in 2001.

The Magpies are said to have been monitoring Hurst, whose side have lost just two of their last 14 league and cup matches, racking up nine wins in the process.

Grimsby have also recorded an emphatic 3-0 win over Notts in pre-season, a display that the Kop faithful still refer to today as a particularly poor performance from their side.

As well as Hurst, Northampton manager Chris Wilder's odds also shortened dramatically as he was installed as second favourite.

Wilder is based in Sheffield and played for Notts in the 1996/97 season. He was reportedly considered for the Cambridge United job, which was eventually given to ex-Magpies gaffer Shaun Derry.

The Cobblers, who are second in League Two, have been plagued by off the field problems, but have since been taken over by Kelvin Thomas, who was Wilder's chairman at Oxford United.

I don't know much about either, yet provided whoever becomes the next manager shows that he can correct performances, mistakes and just generally tidy things up - that will be more than enough.

Personally I still hope for Cooper, yet Wilder seems to know a good amount of knowledge.

Ultimate it will be whoever impresses the board, so we will have to wait but I was hoping it would be announced sooner rather than later.

I sincerely hope we don't go for Paul Hurst, if he does get the job it would just prove how of Branston pickle the club really is in

Hurst has  decent win ratio about him though. If we look at the usual no marks like Danny Wilson, the list isn't too bad if we believe the press as to who is on it.

Cooper

Hurst

Wilder

Sheridan

Powell

Not a bad manager amongst them.

Then you add in Baraclough and you can begin to worry as knowing Notts from that list it'll be him or somebody like Purse with no experience, but did well in interview.

For me it's one job where the interview should consist of "Do you want it? Would you do it for this much and have this much for transfers."

All the rest of the interview is a waste of time.

Let's hope we don't go too left field.

Paul Hurst's record isn't shabby at all, especially since he took sole charge of Grimsby. He's an up-and-coming manager but these appointments are always a risk - would he be a Nigel Clough or a Gary Mills? Also has little experience of League Two.

Steve Clarke and Ian Baraclough would be the typical Trew-esque leftfield appointments. Could work out but a total stab in the dark.

Anyone know about the way Grimsby play ? But his record speaks for itself, I wouldn't be too unhappy if we appointed hurst
