Kyle Cameron and John Bostock shine as Notts County come up short against Wrexham

PON_News

In a high-stakes encounter between two National League heavyweights, Notts County took an early lead through a brilliant John Bostock free-kick, but Wrexham quickly responded as Paul Mullin muscled his way onto a cross to equalise and then set up Jacob Mendy for the home side's second goal.

However, Kyle Cameron headed County level, and Elliot Lee restored Wrexham's lead with a close-range finish after another assist from Mullin.

In a dramatic finish, Wrexham goalkeeper Ben Foster saved a penalty from Cedwyn Scott to secure a vital win for the Dragons.

Before the match, both teams had amassed 100 points and 106 goals, with Notts County's Macaulay Langstaff breaking a National League and club record with 41 goals over the season, while Mullin led Wrexham's scoring with 34 goals.

Despite County manager Luke Williams suggesting that the title race was "over" in late March, the win allowed Wrexham to regain top spot and maintain their advantage with a game in hand.

The match was a cagey affair in the first half, but the tempo picked up in the second half as both teams fought for the win.

Mullin was a constant threat for Wrexham, muscling past defenders and providing key assists, while Cameron and Bostock were among the standout performers for Notts County.

In the end, Wrexham's sharpness in front of goal proved decisive, as they clinched a crucial win to boost their promotion hopes.

john bostocks free kick is the type of goal you hope would win games, i thought wrexham did better in the first half. a lot of iffy antics but both teams played well. as i said in the match discussion, i dont personally blame the officials i thought they did quite well. unfortunately notts just was not good enough on the day.

its what it is, but we have had a good season and need to use this to push on through the playoffs.

Notts needed to step up their pass accuracy in the first half. I thought Jim O'Brien did well to win the ball back at times and dart forward. Ruben Rodrigues offered little defensively; when it mattered, Notts were clumsy. Good goal by John Bostock!

After John Bostock's stunning goal put us ahead, I had high hopes for the second half. Unfortunately, defensive errors proved costly and we were unable to hold onto the lead. However, credit must be given to Wrexham for their improved performance. While their physicality and tendency to dive can be frustrating, they played much better than in their previous highlights or at Meadow Lane. It's disappointing to come away with a loss, but hopefully we can learn from our mistakes and improve in the next match.

It's not really a matter of the other team being better, it's more about how they handled the situation and made the most of the support from their home crowd. I watched the highlights and all of the other team's goals made it seem like Notts County couldn't defend well. For example, the first goal was confusing because our player fell down too easily. On the second goal, nobody was guarding the far post and the goalkeeper had no chance when they were left wide open like that. The same player who fell down easily for the first goal also made a mistake for the third goal. Their poor defending was really apparent.

Can we talk about that free kick by Bostock for a second? He picked his spot and just let it rip! I’m surprised the net didn’t disintegrate on impact. Sure, it wasn’t the only damage done, but it was one heck of a game between two amazing teams. It’s easy to feel deflated after something like that, but remember: hot air balloons rise and so will County. Keep your chins up!
