Notts County triumphs over Chesterfield and reclaims title as world’s oldest football league club

PON_News

Notts County reclaimed their status as the ‘world’s oldest football league club’ after beating Chesterfield on penalties in an astonishing National League promotion final at Wembley.

Substitute goalkeeper Archie Mair saved spot-kicks from Darren Oldaker and Jeff King before Cedwyn Scott sealed a dramatic 4-3 shoot-out triumph. Victory for the 161-year-old Magpies ended their four-year non-league exile while defeat consigned Chesterfield to a sixth season in the National League.

Chesterfield took the lead early on when Andrew Dallas put them ahead from the spot after a calamitous start from Notts goalkeeper Sam Slocombe.

Notts veteran John Bostock caught Chesterfield goalkeeper Ross Fitzsimons out with a set-piece that skipped in at the near post to level the score.

Armando Dobra restored Chesterfield’s lead in the first period of extra time, but Ruben Rodrigues bounced a volley off the turf and over Fitzsimons to level at 2-2 in the second half of extra time, ensuring the showdown would be decided from the spot.

After four years and three failed play-off attempts, Notts finally secured their English Football League (EFL) return at the end of a record-breaking season.

Luke Williams’ side were pipped for automatic promotion and the title by Hollywood-funded Wrexham, who topped the table with an all-time high 111 points. The 107 points the Magpies collected to finish second would have got them straight up as champions in every other season before this one.

Chesterfield finished one spot below Notts in the table, but the gap between the two was 23 points. They pushed Notts to their limits at Wembley in an incredible energy-sapping game.

On-loan keeper Mair played an instrumental role off the bench with his penalty saves and Scott kept his cool to secure victory.

what a rollercoaster! the whole game felt tense but magical at the same time. i am very fortunate that @CliftonMagpie and @TheSkipper asked me to join them in travelling to the game. i enjoyed every minute with them and watching notts. i don't want to discredit chesterfield because they played well. their fans in the ground were also very lively. they got behind their players a little better than us and it was not due to leading the game. they just wanted it and showed it.

our fans were incredible in spells but with the amount we took, everyone signing the same chant would be hard and we dont handle our emotions that well.

Notts County's victory over Chesterfield on penalties to clinch promotion at Wembley is a special memory. The lads should be proud to have gotten us across the line and back into the Football League. It was a hard-fought battle and their determination and skill paid off in the end. Well done to all involved!

The triumph of Notts over Chesterfield in a nail-biting penalty shoot-out to secure promotion at Wembley will forever be etched in our memories. The team should hold their heads high for their incredible achievement in bringing us back to the Football League. Special shout out to Archie Mair, Aaron Nemane and Cedwyn Scott for their outstanding performances. It was a tough match, but the lads showed true grit and determination to come out on top. Congratulations to everyone!

It may not have been the ideal performance, but what counts is the win! Securing it through penalties made it even more special, despite the added tension. What a fantastic trip to London! The reactions of the players were brilliant.

It's disappointing that the club hasn't put up a match report yet. While they may be busy, a report is a crucial part of a media team's job. It should have been written during the game and posted immediately after the final penalty was taken. However, it's good to know that the report is to the point and detailed.

I had a fantastic time on my trip to London to see Notts play at the new Wembley Stadium. The stadium has been nicely rebuilt, but I must admit that I do miss the old one. There was something special about the history and character of the original Wembley that made it such an iconic venue. Nevertheless, it was still a great experience to see Notts play at the new stadium.

I watched the playoff final on an American sports channel that picks up BT Sport’s games in the US. Honestly, I didn’t think Notts would beat Chesterfield who pressed for every ball in the first half. When Notts came into it they looked better but Chesterfield always looked dangerous until it came to taking the pens.
