Posted June 21, 2024Jun 21 #1 As with all Sports many Players, Drivers and Riders end up with a Nickname. This got me thinking and I've found Nicknames of Football Players, there are a Dozen Listed here to Start With Ten well known ones and a Couple I've made up. I'd be interested in what Nicknames other PON Members Know and read their Lists. Alan Hinton - Gladys. Stanley Mathews - The Wizard of Dribble David McGoldrick - Didzy Lev Yashin - The Black Spider Ole Gunner Solskjaer- The Baby Faced Assassin Now the ones I've come up with Franz Beckenbauer - The Kiaser. Pele - The King Diego Maradona - You Cheating B****** for his hand of God Goal. Eusebio - The Black Panther or Black Pearl Norman Hunter - Bites Yer Leg Jodi Jones - Electric or Lightning or both together. And My Favourite Steve Bloomer - The Deadly Angel Edited June 21, 2024Jun 21 by Wheelbarrow repair man
June 21, 2024Jun 21 #2 I think the most appropriate nick names I've seen, which described them & their football style to a tea are :- Stuart Pierce. "Psycho" Brian Kilcline " Killer Kilcline" Norman "Bites Yer Legs" Hunter
June 21, 2024Jun 21 #3 Mike Edwards - 'Steady Eddie' Lee Hughes - 'Hughesy' Kyle Cameron - 'Cammo' Cal Roberts - 'Geordie Messi' Alan Judge - 'Judgey' and 'Irish Messi' Bartoz Bialkowski - 'The Bartman' Dean Yates - 'Yatesy' Adam Chicksen - 'Chicks' Macaulay Langstaff - 'Macca' and 'Non-League Haaland' If I took some time, I could probably add to this. ???? Great idea! @Wheelbarrow repair man
June 21, 2024Jun 21 Author #4 @Chris and @Robbie Why is it you Always forget the Obvious? Those that you named I've written about using their Nicknames. Killer , Hughesy Macca etc. As Homer Simpson would say DOH!!
June 21, 2024Jun 21 Author #5 If I remember right EX-Chelsea Goalkeeper Peter Bonetti was Nicknamed the Cat. Another Chelsea Legend was Ron Harris who was known as Chopper. Viv Anderson of Forest Nickname was Spider. But I'm not a 100% sure of that. Jack Charlton of Leeds and England was also known as Rubber Neck, I believe While another Leeds player Alan Clarke was called Sniffer, because he could sniff out a chance of a Goal. Nothing Drug Related. @Chris and @Robbie there maybe more to come.
June 21, 2024Jun 21 #6 Peter Shilton: 'Shilts' Ian Bowyer: 'Bomber' Peter Hindley 'Tank' All played for Forest.
June 22, 2024Jun 22 Author #11 A lot of the Nicknames in this thread are based on the Players Name Which May or May Not be the Easy way to go about things? Current Notts players not Mentioned. Jodi Jones - Jonesy. Sam Slocombe - Slokes. Aaron Nemane - Aza. Scott Robertson- Robbo Cedwyn Scott - Scotty. The List just goes on. Another Nickname for Jodi - Corporal, after Clive Dunn's character in Dad's Army Corporal Jones.
June 22, 2024Jun 22 #12 John O'Hare - Solly, The King, Kevin Hector - Zak or Zack(Named after a character in the mid 60's football based series 'United'
June 22, 2024Jun 22 Author #13 @super_ram I always thought John O'Hare's Nickname was Barrell, because of his Barrelled Chest?

June 22, 2024Jun 22 Author #17 @super_ram That's a Strong Possibility ,the only reason I said John O'Hare was that he scored a late goal vs Leeds to Knock them out of the F.A Cup 3-2, and the Ball came off his Chest, and it was said Old Barrell Chest's scored the winner. Mind You it was an awful Long Time Ago so memories ain't as Sharp as they used to be. I also remember Dave Mackay was once called by a Reporter when he first signed for Derby Old Man River, because he just keeps Rolling Along. Wasn't he due to Retire before Cloughie brought him to the Baseball Ground?
June 22, 2024Jun 22 #18 I remember when Dave signed for Derby. I think Cloughie built the team around him and got Dave to play as sweeper. Funny that today they expect the goalie to do that???? Dave went to Swindon after his Derby days for a year.

June 23, 2024Jun 23 Author #20 @super_ram One of the most Vivid things I remember about Dave Mackay was that photo of him and Billy Bremner, where Dave's got Bremner by the front of his shirt and is almost lifting him off the Ground in Shear Anger. What had happened Dave wasn't long back after Breaking a Leg and Bremner had Fouled him, and Dave didn't like it which was understandable remembering the Dirty Leeds Side of the 1970's.
