Update.

Notts 0 Port Vale 1, 37 mins

Notts have had plenty of possession, 70%, but Port Vale are holding firm, & they have the goal.

Update.

Big chance for Vale.

Half Time

Work to do in the second half.

Notts 0 Port Vale 1.

Notts have had plenty of possession but didn't do much with it in the last 15 minutes

Maybe a change or two will be seen at half time or maybe after 15 mins of the second half if Notts don't get a goal.

Maybe Abbott & Martin for Austin & Tsaroulla.

Update.

Notts 0 Port Vale 1,

76 mins gone

Notts have plenty of the ball but it's gone a little bit static. Needs to be some incisive passing to break Vale down.

Plenty of possession, had the chances in that first half, but today we lacked the quality in that final third, & Notts couldn't finish when they did get the chances.

Notts conceded on the counter once again. Notts huffed and puffed in the second half & only created one chance.

Unfortunately, Vale have done to us, what we did to Carlisle.

Notts have certainly missed Jones & McGoldrick.

But Notts are still only one point behind Walsall who are top.

It's a wide open league this season. All the contenders are dropping points. It is concerning that Notts can't beat the teams around us. 2 defeats at home already.

I think we have to put things into perspective. If Notts had put one of those 3 or 4 chances away in the first 25 minutes, the result may well have been different.

Vale would have had to come out and that would have left space for Notts to exploit. Notts did perform at a high level but unfortunately, conceded to a Vale break on the counter.

There is no doubt that Notts missed, Jones, Edwards, Grant & McGoldrick today

News about Grant, he's going to be out for at least 6 weeks maybe even longer, so that's more bad news on the injury front.

Notts are still up there near the top & still in the mix. Notts just have to dig in & try to grind out results while these key players are missing, & that will begin at Chesterfield next Saturday.

BEWARE of all the Negatives for this Match from So Called Fans. Maynard doesn't know what he's doing. That's two Top Teams Notts have Failed To Beat Etc Etc Regardless of the Magpies Injury Problems which seems to be Turning In To A Crisis. I believe a Vast Majority of the Notts Faithful will Stick with the Team. It would seem Notts are in Desperate need of a New Striker, can Junior be called Back, or is he definitely out on Loan till January with No Call Back? Because of the Worrying form of Cedwyn Scott, who still hasn't opened his Goal Scoring Account. Like Macca at Millwall Ceds just needs that first Goal and hopefully will be able to Kick On From there.

We are going to have to work on a few different strategies/ideas to break down the teams that just put everyone behind the ball and are actually well organised because the space won’t just open up. That’s going to happen again against the better teams this season.

I thought we were too slow and didn’t try to be creative enough we kept opting for the simple pass to feet. We were taking 3 touches at times when we needed to take 2 and even sometimes try 1 touch stuff around their box to break through. We had them more stretched with our wing-backs on their natural side but the two attacking midfielders closest to them didn’t really link up with them that well. We are usually so good at slipping the ball in behind and I think we did it once or twice.

Still think we need Crowley higher up, look at last season he was making runs into the box and scoring, other than his chance early on I think he was far too deep. At the end it looked like he was partnering Platt at the back!

I will say I was quite surprised Port Vale adopted the low/mid-block approach, thought their team had enough quality in it to come at us a bit more, but there you go. Definitely got a tad lucky in that they barely ventured forward and still scored but they did defend their box very well. We didn’t do enough to win, far from it, given how much of the ball we had we were pretty toothless with it.

Dan Crowley stood out with his performance. I believe we need more creativity in our attack. Our forward play lacked the necessary spark to break down the opposition.

Port Vale fans might be pleased with their 1-0 win, but their overall performance was lacklustre. They missed an open goal and relied heavily on defensive tactics, parking the bus at every opportunity. Notts needed to be more clinical in front of goal. Stuart Maynard must ensure we remain unpredictable in our play. Yesterday, we were too predictable against Port Vale, which was disappointing as we didn’t test their keeper enough.

I think it highlights how close teams are at the top end of League Two, I really don't think the match was boring or as bad as some of the comments I overheard during the game or have seen after it.

Had Notts scored first, the game would have been so much different.

That's not a question, because we would have grown into it more, and it would have forced Port Vale to be more open. I always felt like there wouldn't be many goals in the game. As I predicted and mentioned in the content before, I did feel 2 goals would be in it but at the same time I did feel it could easily just end up with a single goal.

I missed that, I looked at my camera screen and the ball was by then in the back of the net.

Looking at the highlights, I do think it looks offside and as for the foul mentioned by Stuart Maynard, I just don't know. I don't really think it matters, because we still need to focus on handling that situation. I felt frustrated, Port Vale players attempting to provoke our fans and that is never a good thing to see. It was good to see them eventually run to their own supporters, not sure the other group had to run to confront the Pavis Stand.

They were happy to continue when we had players down, but threw a fit when they did it to time waste. Again, we just need to continue, but I do hope the club realises that we need another striker.

Josh Martin unfortunately doesn't impress me, he does need further time, but I fail to see how he brings any of the benefits to our team that we haven't already got. Poor passes, lightweight on the ball and runs into areas where Port Vale can easily prevent him. I believe Sam Austin performed significantly better.

Notts tend to start well but struggle after being caught out. The goal was questionable, but it stood, and that’s when you want to see the team respond. We didn’t, and it knocked our confidence. If we had levelled before half-time, we might have turned it around. Games like this and Gillingham could be the difference between automatic promotion and playoffs.

Jatta tried hard, but we needed two up front to counter Port Vale’s defence. Bringing on Robbie Cundy was bizarre and seemed desperate.

@CliftonMagpie

To give him credit, Stuart put Cundy up front & Cundy extracted a good save from their goalie, so putting him up there nearly paid off, but I agree, at home we need two up front. We missed Didzy, who could have been the second striker

Bass - 6 - didn't do anything wrong.

Macari - 6 - didn't do anything wrong.

Platt - 6 - was fairly good.

Bedeau - 6.5 - tried to offer more going forward.

Tsaroulla - 5 - didn't do enough going forward.

Palmer - 6 - was OK

Crowley - 6.5 - good, missed our best chance

Robertson - 6 - was ok

Gordon - 6 - put a lot of balls into the box. Nobody on the end of them min

Austin - 6 - decent today

Jatta - 5 - missed key chances.

Abbott - 6 - why do we play him out of position

Scott - 5 - not good though.

Martin - 1 - pathetic showing

Cundy - 6 - put himself about

Maynard - 2 - was the tactic to keep playing balls into their box, when they were easily dealing with it? Plan B?

It shows how we've adapted and balanced, going from being strong in attack last season to being defensively solid this season. However, we still need that extra bit of quality in important games like this one. I hope we can improve in January. We have goals and a good squad, but we fall short when the quality is needed most.

I think we needed a bit of magic. I thought Dan Crowley might save us, but it wasn’t to be. Port Vale aren’t better than Gillingham and aren’t as good as us as a footballing team. We did everything but score. If we’d taken one of the early chances, it might have changed things, but I still think a draw would have been fairer. There doesn’t seem to be much difference between the top half of League Two, but if we still had Macaulay Langstaff, we’d be a cut above the rest. He’s what we’re really missing, and I hope the club sees that. Jatta and David McGoldrick can score, but we can’t rely on them alone against strong defensive teams.

@Super_Danny_Allsopp Does heading the ball and making one pass really put Robbie Cundy on the same level as others? I’m not sure about that. He wasn’t nearly as good as Matt Palmer, George Abbott, Kellan Gordon, Matty Platt, and Scott Robertson.

I respect your opinion, but giving Josh Martin a 1 seems unfair and a bit biased. He did more than Cundy and just needs time and match sharpness. It was a tough game to bring him into. Cundy doesn’t deserve more than a 4.

@Joshua

Cundy was sent upfront late on to do a job for Stuart. It's not his natural position but you have to give him Kudos for trying. He nearly scored late on too
