Match Discussion: FA Cup - The Posh (A)   Live

I feel like this is the sort of match where someone unexpected could step up. We know the likes of McGoldrick and Jatta will be key, but it’s often in these cup ties where a lesser-seen player pops up with a big moment. Whether it’s a goal, a crucial tackle, or just sheer work rate, it could make all the difference. Peterborough United are strong, but their defence can be got at if we’re brave enough to take the game to them. That’s where the fans can help, too, keeping the energy levels high. I’ve got a feeling this one could go to the wire, and if it does, I fancy us to nick it.

GOOOOOAAAAAL ABBOTT

Full time.

We are out of the FA Cup

We finished with ten men too because Matty Platt hobbled off injured near the end of the game.

Dissapointing defeat at the end but proud of the players for the way they kept going after conceding three quick goals in that 2nd half.

A couple of mistakes cost us at the back too later on, but it was great to see us take a 1:2 lead at half time with goals from Scott & Platt.

Listened to Stuart's post game presser, the four substitutions half way through the 2nd half were planned in view of the very important Tuesday match against Walsall.

All the Notts goals were well taken, and Abbott's goal at the end was pure class.

Platt's injury near the end is a worry too. A calf injury may see him out for several weeks just when Notts have a busy lead up to Xmas.

Dissapointing to go out of the FA Cup but Notts can concentrate fully on the league now.

I am not all that disappointed to be honest, why? I thought Peterborough United were going to hammer us when they started. Their overlaying passes, which put them threw on goal, looked like something they could repeatedly due and this was clear before they scored. That just added as a bigger warning sign, but I thought that helped to calm the game down. Defensively, we adjusted well, and I wouldn't say the first goal was "poor" on our part because they played with a quick release. After they scored, I felt proud to see us adapt, get a grip of their movement and then go on to equalise so shortly after conceding.

Going 2-1 up, it was proud to see, and I am delighted for Matty Platt. I thought he was a rock in defence (although with him coming off it is concerning). I don't think any of the starters played badly, Kellan Gordon put in some fantastic effort and his crosses always looked dangerous.

Platt and Lewis Macari dominated our defensive line, showcasing remarkable courage with their impressive blocks and headers to effectively clear the ball.

Yes, the substitutes changed the game. However, we need to keep in mind Tuesday coming up and how much Peterborough had made us work for the ball. They are a good team, you can see that, and we had to be clever to match them in terms of getting chances. There were times even before they scored their second, they were simply on top, and I do feel they would have scored even if we hadn't made 5 subs.

However, I do acknowledge we still might have won. I think all that can be disregarded because we should be more proud. Some players got vital minutes, and I do think Stuart Maynard made the changes with the thought of Tuesday night and to give some of the other players game time in the FA Cup.

I am delighted for George Abbott, he looked like one of the best players on the pitch.

PS. I really didn't like seeing Peterborough's players warming up on the pitch, they shouldn't be on the field of play. 3 of their final goals, they had 1 or more players over the line, whilst they might not be interfering it's against the rules and very disrespectful. There was one time, we broke with Kellan Gordon and their player, Oscar Wallin had to quickly step off the pitch. It wasn't due to a lack of room, he was just using the actual pitch as his personal warm up area. The 4th official really should have noticed and told them to refrain from stepping over the line. Warm up off the pitch, not on it.

A r

I liked your article about the game @Chris I agree that we should be proud of the players, & how they completed & stuck to their task.

Those substitutions had an effect & disrupted our shape a little, but Stuart was looking forward to the big game on Tuesday which is much more important.

I listened to the post match interview of Stuart & he said that Platt's injury could be a calf strain or just cramp. Let's hope it's just cramp. They'll know more tomorrow morning.

First things first, yes the subs were poor. Maynard should have spaced the subs out and not subbed on 4 players at once and yes we needed to make the subs. If we made no subs today and lost on Tuesday because the players are knackered, Maynard gets stick. If we make subs now, lose the game (even though Posh were all over us) and then lose Tuesday, Maynard gets stick. He can't win in any situation.

The truth is Posh were all over us and it was going to be inevitable, subs or not. I didn't expect us to control it against them but we were hanging on.

Also, Bass' pass out to them for their third isn't about him following the tactics. It's just common sense. He had a good game but a complete brainfart at that moment.

I do have issues with bits of Maynard's management. I don't think we build-up and play at a quick enough intensity enough (check my tweets from Newport and Alfreton). Some substitution decisions are questionable. Sometimes the inverted wing-backs don't work (Newport for example, but they did today because the first two goals came from our wing-backs crossing from their inverted sides).

However, the calls for sacking him are stupidly annoying. I get people are annoyed. I'm frustrated (not overly because the goals were coming, subs or not) but he's got 2 and a half years left on his contract, a decimated squad (the 18 we had is nearly the strongest we can put out at the moment) and he'll be given January because our owners see the bigger picture.

Didn't go today nor did I listen.

However when I saw the subs being made, specifically Martin and Brown, I thought to myself 'why's he bringing them on?'. What followed didn't surprise.

I think Josh Martin is going to be released. I recall (hopefully correctly) he had a 6 month contract.

I wouldn't be against terminating Brown's loan either. He's not terrible like Martin, but I think you can get better from the loan market.

While I understand the need for the substitutions I do feel that using up all the available substitutes with a good portion of the second half still to play isn’t a good idea because your always at risk of finishing with 10 men and that exactly what happened.

However we move on and look forward to meeting Walsall on Tuesday.
