if you had the money to get involved in owning a football club

you just inherited billions and decided to pour it into football but this is no ordinary investment, this is your dream team. how would you build your fantasy club?

  • would you buy an established top flight side, take a punt on a lower league gem, or start fresh and form your own team from scratch?

  • if creating your own club, what would you name it and would you lean into tradition or go bold and modern?

  • would you rebrand an existing club with a new crest, kit, or even a redesigned stadium or respect its heritage?

  • do you see yourself hands on in running the club day to day, or would you put a strong team of staff in place to handle operations while you steer from above?

  • what steps would you take to win the fans over and leave a legacy that’s remembered for generations?

how do you imagine all of this? if you had no budget limits, no boardroom politics and just a passion for football?

If I won all that money I would love to buy Notts & invest in ways that would eventually get Notts into the Premier League, then into Europe.

I would appoint a person with expertise to run the club day to day & appoint a football management team to recruit the best players at each level to ensure success for the club

Notts would need a stadium to be able to match that sucees, so I would look at ways to be able to increase the capacity of Meadow Lane up to 40 K if it were possible.

ML is the heart and soul of the club and I would be very reluctant to leave our famous old ground, but I'm not sure whether it could be extended to hold that amount.

If Notts had to move from Meadow Lane I would still keep the stadium for the Notts Women to play their matches there.

Of course the Notts supporters would have to be won over, but the new stadium wouldn't be just a soulless bowl. It would have to be similar in some way to ML with plenty of car parking space & easy access.

The oldest professional Club winning the Champions League, followed by the World Club Championship would really be something.

You never know, it could happen one day if a very rich benefactor came in with the same intention. We've seen it with other clubs so it is possible.

I've said a similar thing in the past, and I am not sure I would want to get involved in owning a club. There are a lot of things that could spoil how you feel about it once you are involved, and it's not something I wish for. I have a deep passion for football, and my heart lies with Notts. I like the idea of teams growing and becoming a much bigger outfit, like Bournemouth, for example.

I would rather just be an investor, so that my experience as a fan can remain unchanged.

I could stay in the stands even as a billionaire. I might just be tempted to buy a few rows of season tickets so that I can seat people I know near me and, therefore, enjoy it more.

I would buy Notts, no doubt, and I would instantly look for the best fans who are selfless to get involved with bringing about a real evolution where the club is brought to the front, focusing on being "fan-inclusive." I would hire someone to run the club at board level, then make sure each department was correctly staffed. The ticket office would be overhauled; I would make sure fans could actually speak to someone without the phone being put down mid-queue for the 20th person in line.

Appointing a manager to decide who is best to bring in, with a scouting team and analysts to aid him.

Meadow Lane wouldn't need much doing to it, initially.

I would make sure the squad had a good budget to climb the leagues, but I would want to see the manager invest in upcoming young players amongst experienced ones, so by the time promotions were gained, the players would be at the level with them.

I wouldn’t throw money into buying a football club, but I’d happily support one like Notts as a private investor. If I couldn’t stay out of the public eye, I’d stick to being a shirt sponsor or help out in other ways. I understand how being closely involved can change how you see the game.

I wouldn’t like to take Notts off the Bros because I think they’ll do a better job than I ever would be able to! One of the best things about Chris and Alex is that they aren't supporters like us, they don’t react in the same way a fan would. That said if could be involved in someway I’d would do it.

Near where I live now the biggest city is Worcester but their football side is well below the level it could and should be considering around 100,000 people live in the city. They have just been promoted to the Southern League Central and inherited the old Worcester Warriors stadium which has a capacity of 12,000 and could be expanded – not that you’d have to worry about that too soon as I think the average crowd is about 1,000!

I’d probably buy them and look to work my way up the leagues with them, I wouldn’t do anything daft and spend a fortune trying to tempt League/National League players on big wages, I’d look to invest in the infrastructure, coaching and a bit like Notts get a little recruitment team that could help find some better players.

Good topic! I would probably stay well away from football to be honest. You have to put in a huge amount of money just to stand still, and spending is no guarantee of success.

But if money were no object, I'd buy the franchise and close it down. Then I'd take over Notts, make sure we had competent people running all parts of the club and give them a good budget.

Then we could sell cheap season tickets to fill the ground and build our support. Maybe even expand ML if necessary. Apart from having my face on the shirts instead of a sponsor's logo and a giant golden statue of myself on Meadow Lane, I'd keep a low profile.

If I had a billion pounds, I’d buy Notts. The first thing I’d do is bring in a proper security firm to deal with the troublemakers. I’d ban them for life. I wouldn’t mind being controversial if it helped create a better atmosphere for the loyal, sensible and committed fans.

Just picture doing this with some of the worst fanbases in the country, some of them make Twitter trolls seem polite. Clearing out the bad apples would make it much easier to build the right team around the club.

I wouldn’t have a problem with criticism, but if someone can’t give proper feedback, I wouldn’t hesitate to show them the door.

I’d change most of the coaching staff too. I’d bring in top coaches and really push for developing local talent.

Fans would get a say in key decisions. I’d also put serious money into the squad so the club could grow and reach its full potential.

I have often thought about how tempting it would be to buy Nottingham Forest, just to prove a point after the way they treated Nigel Doughty. It would also be about restoring the balance and making Notts County the top club in the city again.

Still, I don’t see any sense in throwing money at football. Too many people get involved for the wrong reasons, and they often take the credit when things go well. When they don’t, it turns sour quickly, even if your intentions are good.

It’s not something I’d want to put myself through. I’d much rather spend the money improving Nottingham and supporting causes linked to the Magpies.
