Ruben Rodriguez is going to Brazil

Featured Replies

Great choice for him! His way of playing football should fit just right.

I kept an eye on Oxford United forums, and he didn't seem to be all that highly rated, though stepping up from the National League, I would say he didn't do all that badly. I had heard rumours he was set for release by them, so I am not surprised to see him leave for an undisclosed fee. There was a slight hope he might come back to us if he hadn't attracted interest. He could have been ideal with David McGoldrick parting, but I wish him well with his pretty big move.

He could help get them in the top league in Brazil, Serie A.

FC Victroria are top of the Copa do Nordeste, so it does look like an excellent move. I am surprised he's not signed for a European team, I would have thought that would be an easier move for him but he should be a good player for them. Best of luck to him.

The advantage of Brazil is that he already speaks the language @TheSkipper!

Very interesting move for him, I'll keep tabs on him. I don't know how he performed at Oxford, but he was in their first 11 pretty much all season, which is a massive step up in just two seasons. Good luck to him at his new club.

Blimey from Oxford to Brazil, who’d have thought it, good luck Ruben, I’d have loved to see him back here but I can see that Brazil might be slightly more alluring. biggrin

Sorry, but I don’t agree. I think it’s not a great choice for someone his age to make.

To me, it kind of shows that Ruben Rodrigues might not get to a bigger team in Europe now. It’s a bit like when Max Power went to play in Saudi Arabia. I liked watching Rodrigues and I’ve got good memories of him, but this makes it feel like he’s not aiming as high anymore.

Even if he plays in a top league in Brazil, it doesn’t really feel like a big moment in his career, does it.

They are pretty football mad in Brazil and whilst it's a league that's unfamiliar to us in Europe, it's probably the top league in South America (along with Argentina's). His new club Vitoria have an average attendance of 23,000 (double ours and Oxfords) so I think it's a great move for him.

I kind of felt he was someone who wanted to play all over the place and was never going to settle anywhere so to speak. I wasn’t surprised when he left us just more so that it was to Oxford and not Oviedo! I think he said he wanted to play in the US too so maybe after a season or two in Brazil he’ll end up in the MLS.

Going to the MLS might be a nice way for him to finish his career. It’s not a bad place to end up.

I always wanted him to do better at Oxford United. I thought he could prove himself there and maybe get picked by a big team in Portugal. If that happened, maybe he could’ve played for the national team a few times. That would’ve been cool.

I can understand why players nearing the end of their careers from around the the World would want to play in the MLS. The money is big, & the number of games would be less than, say in the UK or Europe.

I think Ruben probably had a big wish to play in Brazil if he were deemed good enough. Ruben is a flair player, so I think he will easily fit into the Brazilian way of playing.

The fact that Ruben basically learned a lot of his trade at Notts then to Oxford, but then finishing up in Brazil, is a great story for Notts as well as Ruben.

I think that he will do quite well there & I will certainly be keeping an eye on his Club & how they are doing next season along with Ruben.
