Match Discussion: Stuttgarter Kickers v Notts County

Let's begin with the positives. The players have all got valuable minutes in their legs during this three match tour of Germany.

Becoming match fit is very important to start the season with & the players are well on their way to that goal.

It was nice to see Jodi Jones get some minutes in the second half of this match & he looked sharp.

Good to see Notts take the lead in a match & create a few chances too. Stuttgarter were much more to Notts's level so it was easier to judge where Notts actually are.

I know that the result of a friendly match is not as important as the performance, but it would have been nice for Notts to have held on to the lead..

I think Rod McDonald did well, as did the trialist Keeper. Jodi did ok when he came on too. Jodi & Will playing in the number 10 AM role, interesting.

Being critical, I do think Notts need three or four more players to be a side that can realistically challenge for promotion. I think we need a good striker with a record of scoring goals, an attacking midfielder & a good goalkeeper. .

Also, I don't think Martin is anywhere near knowing who his starting 11 will be. By the way, Jatta didn't start for the B team tonight, so he's had no game time with only just over two weeks till the start of the regular season.

To play away to these strong teams in Germany drawing one, lose by the odd goal in another, is fine. We should 'take it' and build on it.

But this is the main bit

I'm praying that the club share this assessment, otherwise it could be a long season

A very interesting and informative kickabout yesterday. I was unsure about the starting lineup, but once they settled into the game they gave a good account of themselves.

A draw was a fair result, but both sides will feel like they should have won. I felt the hosts edged the first half an hour and had the better of the chances up to then. Stuttgart looked more composed and settled, while we were misplacing a lot of passes. After that we settled down and had the beating of them in one-on-one situations without really threatening the goal too much. We never looked like scoring until we did.

Edwards played a little deeper in the Palmer role and made a decent job of it. Hinchy put in another late tackle, he's a red card waiting to happen at the moment. Iopenda looks like a good footballer, and Kouhjar also had some good moments once he'd settled in. I think Jones definitely has what it takes for the no. 10 spot, but would we miss his crossing?

Both sides looked toothless in front of goal, and for that reason neither looked like a genuine promotion contender to me. But two or three astute signings really could make a world of difference.

Special kudos to the commentary team on the stream, who commentated in English and had really done their homework.

A draw was probably the ideal outcome for both sides. I’ve no idea how Notts performed as I didn’t pay for the stream, but I’m looking forward to the Cardiff pre-season friendly. With trialists on show and the squads being split, it’s not easy to keep momentum, though overall I’d take the draw.

i forgot about the game which is a shame because i would have paid for the stream to see how the game went, but i dont think a draw is a bad outcome. we are getting the minutes into the players legs, fitness levels should be increasing and we come back for the "private" game and cardiff home friendly having had a good run out in Germany. i dont expect notts to win cardiff, but it would be good to see us put lessons learned from this game and the two other german games into practice.

the results of pre season games mean little, so i am sure the players are settling into life under martin paterson and for the new signings to get up to speed with the notts way.

The tour sounds like it was worthwhile. Martin Paterson will have seen who’s solid at the back and how the team coped against decent opposition. The results don’t mean much, sure, wins help with morale, but it’s the start of the season that really matters. Paterson should now have a clearer idea of who his top players are, and how to get more out of the rest. A 1-1 draw’s not a bad way to round off the German tour, now onto the Cardiff friendly.
