Match Discussion: League Two - Chesterfield FC (A)

Featured Replies

I'm just going to put this down to a poor performance from the players. The team has had a pretty good run until this defeat today & there has been illness in the camp which could have taken its toll on the players.

Martin has been very good up to this point in planning well for opponents, & his tactics have been spot on too. The team just couldn't get going & the first goal was always going to be vital.

But for all said & done, Notts have to just put this down to a bad day at the office. Notts need to regroup & put in a good performance at MK Dons on Monday evening.

Another thought....it was OK for Richard Montague to state the obvious about everyone having a price, but maybe he didn't need to name names. Pato had lit a fire under those players following the two home defeats in November. it seemed liek we were back to that again today.

What a poor display that was. We had no control over the game at all, and if you can't string more than three passes together you're not going to have many opportunities in the final third. And we wasted the few opportunities we had. We had no midfield - whenever our players were struggling to hold onto possession by the sidelines, there was no support forthcoming from the centre of the field - their options were to go back or to have a hopeful punt forward. With Palmer or Robertson (ideally both) on the pitch, it would have been a different game.

Bennetts is quick and gets into good positions, but is often wasteful with his end product. I think he'll be rested for Monday. I still don't see the point of Norburn. Jones could do with more minutes to build his confidence, he's getting cameos off the bench and is overthinking everything. Roos needs to learn to catch. HOWEVER, a bad day at the office doesn't mean we need to offload half the team. Some fans are too quick to write players off.

I was a bit surprised the manager didn't freshen things up a bit. He'll definitely need to for the next match now. In the absence of Palmer and Robertson, I'd give Hinchey a go in the middle in the hope of having an actual midfield again, select Jones from the start and tell him this is his chance to reclaim his first 11 spot again. Jatta/Dennis have served us very well, give them better service and the goals will come again. Having said that, they would benefit from some help/competition arriving in the January window.

With you on Jones @DangerousSausage . If MP isn't convinced, and I can't blame him for that, Slocs or Montague need to tell him there's a matchwinner lurking there who has only just turned 28, and might be able to win some more matches for us if given the trust and a proper chance to get back into the team

They had 2 aeging centre backs, 1 even on a yellow, did we go at them at anytime in the game, of course we didn't we're Notts play it safe County. We've rode our luck in a lot of games we've won, so let's not paper over the cracks.

Todays result and performance seems to highlight the flaw in the mantra that winning is all that matters. We have done that recently without playing particularly well, but you can't keep playing like that and continue winning. I think most agree we need a good January transfer window, but I'm not sure we can bring enough good players in while at the the same time letting a quite a few go. One thing we can say is that the current squad is not good enough.

Absolutely right @McPie ....'find a way to win' 'win when not playing well' are cliches not a strategy and over a 46-game season it'll catch up with you. January has become very important again, especially for that No.10 and Goalkeeping spots

Well that didn’t go to plan did it? A surprisingly lacklustre performance from Notts which is disappointing given their good form of late. I don’t remember a single shot at goal. Unfortunately for Roos both goals can be attributed partially if not wholly to him, for the first goal he pushed the ball straight into the path of their player instead of catching it or at least pushing it to the side and the second goal it looked like he told Jatta to leave it and then fluffed it. He seems to have reverted back to type after impressing lately.

We need a reaction now against MK Dons.

Very annoyed with yesterday. A complete lack of pressing throughout the game, simple passes going astray and not reaching their intended target and a lack of fight and battle. Once, when we tried to break yesterday and Bennetts' 5-yard pass to Dennis found no one because Dennis positioning was poor and another time Bennetts produced a fantastic ball over from the left to the advertising boards on the opposite side.

Another big problem was our continuous launching of the ball forward to McFadzean and Grimes, who's bread and butter is winning aerial duels. Instead of playing through the lines with passes (from which we had forced two early corners) and pressing them, knowing both of them are slow and both of them were both on yellow cards in the first half. This is a combined problem of tactics and player mindset.

This isn't the first time this season we've played like this away from home. We were the same against Barrow, Barnet and Bristol Rovers. Two of them we got away with, because fought and battled. Yesterday we didn't fight. A game with 0 shots on target for the first hour and a game lacking in creative spark and quality, with the game being open for someone to take control of it. A total lack of intensity.

It's these kind of performances that really make me doubt this team. Tsaroulla isn't doing enough at the moment and went walking into centre-midfield for their first goal. A lack of quality at wing-back and in goal. That should be the final straw for Kelle Roos. It's also obvious we're in need of a creative midfielder and a striker to challenge Jatta and Dennis.
