Match Discussion: League Two - Shrewsbury Town (A)

Featured Replies

Stlll in a different time zone entirely so really disappinting to wake up to this. Could still turn out to be a great season but our defeats have been really lame, complete no-shows for the most part. MP says every game is tough and that's kind of true but let's not forget this is the 4th tier - teams in the bottom half are the dregs of the football league. We should have enough to overcome them. I think back to the Allardyce championship season - a team of solid pros and we basically got promoted by doing the double over all the teams in the bottom half.

A lost opportunity for sure but the damage was limited by other results. Jatta was a huge loss. He's the focal point.

@theAnticlough I'm not wanting a fundamental change of approach. What I'm envisaging is for Notts to counter the way some teams like we saw Shrewsbury doing, getting all their players behind the ball & allowing Notts plenty of possession but being successful in stopping Notts getting through them with any worthwhile penetration.

It happened quite a lot last season & the season before, & nether Luke or Stuart could solve it. Notts have shown how good they are on the break. Sometimes a team has to adapt to different situations & try something different for that particular match up.

@Robbie well put. Agree that we have that capability....goals like the Bristol Rovers winner and the penalty at Bromley prove it. There'll be plenty of other examples too.

Despite the low level, the last 7 seasons have been one of the best periods from the 54 years I've been a fan. Why? The bros came in declaring positive, attacking and entertaining football and for once an owner/manager has been true to their word! Note, they never said possession-based, although that kind of comes with the territory up to a point, and IB and SM back-tracked in negative ways which LW certainly didn't. MP is trying, and succeeding, to be true to that mission too. I think this means we always try to be a front-foot team, not a back-foot one. Sometimes, i.e. when losing your entire first choice midfield unit (which keep on happening) and lacking that quality in other areas, things can look really bad, like last night.

I'd hate us to stop being a front-foot positive team and would like the club to work on fixing any shortfalls while keeping that approach.

Anyway, I get the point you're making now and it's a fair one.

Disappointing night yesterday. Shrewsbury looked far better than they did early in the season - they barely strung two passes all night, but they had a clear game plan and executed it well. They sat deep, but the moment we lost possession they were onto us fast and attacked quickly with numbers. They still produced few real chances, but it looked difficult to play against.

We struggled to get behind them and seldom looked really dangerous. Platt came closest to scoring, but early in the second half I thought the game looked like a 0-0. We need someone who can take the initiative and isn't afraid to have a shot. Tangen could yer be that player, but he looked lost yesterday. Prior to joinign us he hasn't played since about October, and in hindsight it was too soon to give him his first start.

I'm not surprised to hear that it was the referee's first league match, all the contentious decisions went Shrewsbury's way. One of them was the foul on Jones, which led to a dangerous break (and, a couple of minutes later, the goal), and I think we should have had a penalty at the end.

Disappointing but we move on. Everything isn't all bad overnight, let's not forget that we've picked up 18 points in our last eight games. Let's take it out on Tranmere on Saturday.

As disappointing as it was to lose to Shrewsbury, it was only 1-0. Any team team can lose 1-0 to an inferior team especially when they approach the game with a low block and a 'survival' game plan. As @DangerousSausage says we move on, these kind of games happen in a season. A good result on Saturday and this will all be forgotten. COYP!
