I was watching the England v Estonia game tonight and the ref added 4 extra minutes at the end. At the top of the TV screen the added minutes were shown counting down and it got me thinking why is it that when I go to a Notts match the scoreboard stops at 90 minutes and if minutes are added we are left guessing when the match will finish.

Is there a reason for this? Why can't they leave the clock running does anyone know?

Officially clubs are not allowed to do it, especially at live games. This is because it's believed to interfere and disrupt the match officials, also the referee as the power to extend the time as he see's fit and so it would cause further confusion by a club doing so. I wasn't aware TV was allowed either, although thinking about it the officials won't hear 7 million fans screaming "blow the whistle!".

I personally keep track in the same way Colin Slater does.

This is the only way, at a football game the clocks and scoreboards must show 90 minutes. I don't believe they can either show a + for extra time but I might be wrong.

The Rams had a match a few weeks ago.I think it was v Cardiff.Rams dominated the first half and should have been winning easily. The second half started and before you knew it ,Cardiff were 2 up.Completely different from the first half .The Rams dragged themselves back into the game, equalising before again dominating.About 5 minutes were added at the end of the game but Cardiff were blatantly timewasting and in the end about 7 minutes were added. My point being that no one but the ref knows how much added time is added to added time.
