Defoe v Altidore

Jermaine Defoe has been signed by Sunderland AFC in what has been a straight swap deal seeing Jozy Altidore move over to Toronto FC.

Defoe whilst having scored 11 goals in 16 games for the MLS side, hasn't settled too well and found himself not to be a crowd favourite. Altidore on the other hand has appeared 42 times for Sunderland scoring just once.

Whilst this seems a win win for both Defoe and Gus Poyet at Sunderland, does it fit? Can Sunderland change the style of football they play sufficiently to get the best out of Defoe? I believe so, Poyet has worked with Defoe in the past and knows how to get the best out of him, and also proved himself to be a more than capable manager.

As the article suggests, is this the best January signing ever?

The states play slower football, it's not as fast paced and so quick players will struggle when they're the wrong side of 30.

Defoe would have been smart to remain in the UK had their been any offers, even if that meant joining a Championship side. I am surprised Sunderland have signed him, however they need a goal scorer and he needs the money after his move to the states. :P

I beg to differ about speed. I find the EPL to be more technical and better passing. Though I find there to be a lot of poor power shots. Though they look pretty in my mind. The defoe for Altidore is just plain stupid on the mls side. Josy hasn't done anything in two years and I would be glad to never see him play for the USA anymore. Defoe is injury prone so not a huge win for Sunderland. He barely played for Toronto. Toronto just bought Sebastian Giovinco. That's a steal. You'll see the MLS buying a lot of good players soon.

And i meant to say they look pretty when they go in.

Altidore is rubbish, and I'm shocked he even made it to the PL. To swap him for Defoe, is a no brainer.

i'll tell you he doesnt even have a place in the MLS. our clubs have added a lot of speed lately, mainly portland and some of the west coast teams, he will get beat by these defenses who wont put up with his slow pace. Yedlin is proof of what we got and by all means I see the EPL snatching up some of these players soon.

Altidore made it because sometimes the only confidence you need as a striker is a 30+ season like he had in the Dutch league, but sadly it wasnt his confidence that needed honing, he needed his skills honed. Ha oh well.

They can't even pronounce the game right. All American sports are so boring to watch.
