Tony's tantalising trivia

Inspired by @super_ram I have decided to give you all a trivia question, hopefully it won't be as hard as Super's and someone will actually remember the player.

Question:

Which ex Notts County player started as a miner, played for Notts as a defender and then went on to be a successful country and western singer and got to No.2 in the American charts.

No prizes, just for fun.

Correct @jimmy magpie, well done, I like the way the system has starred out his first name. For those that don't know it's short for Richard.

When I first read the question I was stumped and as @GrannyPie will testify it does drive me mad if I can't remember a name or  answer a poser..What I always do is put the question to the back of my mind and get on with something else. However the question kept popping back in my head and wouldn't go away. Then, suddenly ,for no reason,I remembered one of my old mates who was into local music and also a big football fan and  from somewhere in the recesses of my memory I recalled him mentioning a footballer from Kirkby in Ashfield having a big country hit in the states. With this information a little bit of research gave me the name that @jimmy magpie also gave. God knows where my recollection came from, isn't it funny how our memory works.Good one @ 'tonyhateley,at least I won't lie awake tonight trying to work out the answer

Good memory recall @super_ram, yes he was from Kirkby in Ashfield, not sure whether he's still with us.

he had 2 of his vocal chords removed a couple of years ago due to cancer and no longer sings but is apparently still performing playing guitar.

Yes I read that too I wonder if he's still around?

He is still around, I heard he is still involved in ex player events at Notts.

When people ask what 'American Pie' is about, they're missing the point. The song isn't about the lines themselves - it's about what is between the lines. The song is about what isn't there.
