R.i.p Tommy Lawton

I can recall my Grandfather telling me he had passed away, someone he thought a lot about and as a child - I had a lot of respect already for the great man for this reason. Usually some children aren't as interested but I loved his stories, including Granny Pies! He was a true gentleman.

R.I.P Tommy Lawton.

Sadly I am not quite old enough to remember Tommy Lawton he was a bit (not much) before my time but I know he was a great header of the ball not unlike the great Tony Hateley, so if I had seen Tommy Lawton play I could have been coming on this board calling myself tommylawton instead of tonyhateley.

I never saw Tommy Lawton play either but when IΒ  was young his name was always beingΒ  mentioned along with all the top players of the time like Stanley Matthews,Tom Finney and Nat Lofthouse. My old work colleague in the 60's andΒ  also my father in law(Joe's grandad and Granny's dad)also spoke about him endlessly. What a shame that so much of his playing career was was lost due to the war.A genuine, true great.R.I.P.Tommy.

I can just about remember Tommy becoming manager of Notts County between 57-58 but as sadly happens when an ex player comes to manage their team it didn't work out.

Let's hope Shaun Derry can break the mold.
